Lydia carried a small canvas and a bag of brushes. Her graceful movements belied the fact that she was actually scared of the staircase she was walking down. She was horrified of heights, and terrified whenever they began to shift. She was going to the lake to watch the squid. She had been working on this painting for several weeks, and she was hoping if she could observe the beast a little closer she could finish it.
Lydia's stomach suddenly gave a lurch. The staircase suddenly began to move to the left. OH God, she thought to herself. I never would of made it this far in Hogwarts if I was in Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. I would never be able to get to the dorms. Her bag and canvas clattered to the ground, and she hugged the railing with all her might.

The walls shook with the vibrations from the music Mary had blasting out of her stereo. She sang along a line or two while lying on her bed with her transfiguration book propped open on her stomach and her wand in her hand. As the song came to an end she tossed her book onto the floor and replaced her wand in its sheath attached to her hip. She shut off the music and grabbed a long navy blue cloak. Throwing it over her shoulders she made her way into the common room. She flopped down in front of the fire with a book; she read one line, then read it again, and again, and again. For some reason she couldn’t concentrate on anything today. Deciding to go clear her head Mary got up and walked up the steps to the entrance hall.
She wandered around the halls not noting where she was going. Up and down staircases, left and right turns everywhere she wandered before finding herself hopelessly lost once more. She started up yet another set of stairs, this one a winding staircase just enough space for one person. It was a very narrow staircase and it reminded Mary of a muggle fairy story she read once, Rapunzel. As she wound higher and higher in the tower feeling it sway Mary smiled daintily resting a hand on the rail and constantly placing one foot in front of the other.
All of a sudden she heard a clash and things bumping down the steps. A number of paintbrushes assailed her boots and Mary reached down to pick them up while continuing up the steps. Finally she rounded a corner and found the source of all the paintbrushes clinging to the handrail as if the floor beneath her was about to give way. Mary smirked at the girl in a very classic Slytherin manner and held the brushes out to her. “Lose something?” she asked simply not moving forward to the girl but not backing off either; waiting for her to detach herself from the wall and take the brushes.

Lydia held on for dear life until she heard a voice say " Lose Something." She stood up and straightened her cloak and brushed of her skirt. She quickly arranged her cloak so the Slytherin emblem was prominent. She stepped toward the girl. " Thank you," she said, taking the brushes.
" I really hate these stair cases. I've never been much on heights. I'm Lydia Rivers by the way. I've seen you in the common room before but have never been able introduce myself." She smiled a rare smile, attempting to show a degree of nicity to her housemate. " It's always such a chore carrying around all these paints and brushes. My house elf home normally does it for me there."

The girl suddenly straightened herself which Mary smirked at; the sudden correction only emphasized what an embarrassing position she had been caught in. She straightened her robe and Mary caught sight of the green emblem on her chest identical to the one on Mary’s school robes. She raised her eyebrow at this girl wondering why she couldn’t place her; surely she would at least recognize a housemate, especially with her mother’s emphasis on her knowing all Slytherins from respectable families. She was brought out of her reverie though by the girl introducing herself as Lydia Rivers and mentioning how much of a bother it is to carry around all her paint supplies.
“Mary Evans. Why do you carry them around then? Surely you know how to levitate…” Mary said with a raised eyebrow and smirk touching her lips to the girl who seemed to be older than herself… Levitation was taught in first year charms so why didn’t this girl just have them float in front of her?

Bee walked out of the portrait hole walking very fast. She was going to go somewhere, anywhere, just away from people. She wasn't much of a social butterfly and she didn't like everyone jabbing her with questions about her family. Well just as long as she could get away she would be fine. Max, Bees' little black kitten, followed her as she walked down the stairs. She stopped dead in her tracks, when she saw two Slytherins on the stairs. What are they doing here? she thought suspiciusly. Shouldnt they be in the dungeons? Bee noticed one of them had that infamous Slytherin smirk and the other one seemed to have lost her dignity or something. The one with out the smirk, looked as if she had had quite a scare. Bee heard the smirking girl say:"Surely you know how to levitate..."which made Bee even more curious. Putting on an uncaring face, she started walking towards the Slytherins, with Max right behind her.

She noticed a girl pass by. She had a sad look on her face. Politley reaching a hand out she turned around to face her. "Whats wrong?" Anna asked. She realized that she shouldn't have said that. She probaly didn't want to be questioned by someone she dind't know. At this moment she probaly didn't want to be questioned at all right now. Anna didn't blame her. She didn't want to be questioned either. She should have had more common sense and not asked.

As Mary spoke to the older girl she heard footsteps approaching from behind and turned on her heel. Standing behind her was a Gryffindor in her year she didn’t know. Mary smirked at the girl who didn’t seem to be introducing herself immediately… she was feeling cruel. “You know its not good to sneak up on a serpent… you may get bitten. Surely your tainted Gryffindor blood couldn’t handle the venom of a true witch.” Mary said to the girl with distaste. It was true Mary had friends in other houses, close ones too, but this pair didn’t have to know that; Mary was allowed to have her fun. “Out with what you want little girl before I decide to test how much poison you can handle.” Mary continued to the girl who was likely her age; but Mary didn’t care, she was a Gryff who had come up behind Mary without a word, that was all that mattered.

Bee stopped dead in her tracks when she heard a voice behind her. She turned sharply to face the girl with the smirk on her face. The girl started talking to her and Bee listened intently, until she started to feel alittle uncomfortable. It seemed like this girl was threatning her, and she was doing a good job. When she heard the part about "...couldn't handle the venom of a true witch...." she felt white hot rage surge through her blood. She may be a muggle born, but did that matter to people? No, but it seemed to matter to the Slytherins, or at least some of them. This girl didn't seem any different and Bee tried to straighten her face, but she guessed that her face looked really fierce.
"I don't want anything with you," Bee said in a whisper, trying to control herself. "I would have avoided you Slytherins, since some of you are a rude lot....." Bee couldn't help herself but use that same Slytherin smirk, as she looked at the girl. "But sadly, I had to pass you...." She looked at the girl, sizing her up. The girl had said that she, Bee, was a little girl, but the girl didn't look much older than her. Bee didn't want a fight, but she would fight if it came down to that. This girl had critisized her, whether on purpose or not, and she wasn't going to get away with it.

Mary simply smirked at the girl as she whispered she wanted nothing to do with Mary because some Slytherins are rude. ‘Some people are just too easily intimidated; they deserve to be toyed with’ she thought sadistically as the girl visibly composed herself and now sported a smirk. "But sadly, I had to pass you..." The girl said as if it were some sort of insult.
“Unfortunately you hadn’t passed far enough away; like say in your own world. Tell me, how did your parents take it when you got your letter? Were they proud? You would amount to more than they ever dreamed of. Or were they smart and realised your kind don't belong here? Did they try and stop you from coming?” She said assuming the girl was halfblood or less though not knowing for sure. Fact was if she was a pureblood Mary would more than likely know it because her family would be mocked constantly and since her face didn’t ring any bells and Mary had never cared enough to remember her name in class she couldn’t be pure.

Bee stared at this girl. It was like she didn't even have an effect on her. It was like she couldn't hear her. But this girl sure did know how to get her riled up. She is insulting me again, Bee thought as she stared at the girl in distaste. Once the girl had said her words, Bee was so mad she could barely talk straight. "Actually," Bee said in a voice of compleate rage. "You guessed right. Congrats! My PARENT did try to stop me from coming because he wanted me at home to entertain him!" By now she was yelling. This girl probably thought she was some sort of freak, but that idea only amused Bee. This girl didn't know what she had gotten into when she had made her snap. This girl had made Bee tell that she only had one parent. So far, most people asumed that she had two parents, but she only had ONE. One lousy dad and a confused and uncaring brother. This girl may be a pureblood but what did that matter. Even purebloods had messed up lives, didn't they? Bee looked at the gril again. "That's right. I only have one lousy dad, who is a muggle. Yeah, you heard. I am guessing you have a perfect family, with a great dad and a wonderful mom and maybe a nice sister or brother. I am sure you are so pure that your family is pure too. Am I right? Is that what made all you Slytherin scum, perfect? " She looked the girl right in the eye. "Oh, and believe me, I would have passed as far away as possible from you........great........" She couldn't say what they were. She was lost for words. She didn't want to say what she was thinking right now, even to a Slytherin. She wasn't that bad. "So anyway, was I right? Is your family as perfect as your rotton blood?" She asked.

Mary smirked with self-satisfaction as the girl freaked saying that Mary got it right and blah blah blah; one parent blah blah blah. She then started ranting asking about Mary’s family and questioning whether or not they were perfect. Fact was Mary’s family definitely was not perfect; her mother was domineering and her father was spineless… “Now now little girl, just because your family are horrid and your blood is worthless does not mean you have to go calling mine rotten. Now I know jealousy gets to even the best of us but you really are making a fool of yourself in front of… what's your name?” Mary asked turning to the other Slytherin in the stairwell. “But you are correct in one assumption, yes, I am in Slytherin because my family is wonderful. My parents are the perfect pure match and support and love me. I do have to say it was my parents that made me good enough for Slytherin though… they taught me who was worth knowing and who… wasn’t” she said eyeing the Gryffindor meaningfully, obviously insinuating she wasn’t worth knowing. “As well, were it not for their matching with each other, say had one of my parents had dirty blood I wouldn’t be allowed into Salazar’s house.” Mary said her whole speech in a sickeningly sweet patronizing tone as if she were speaking to a five year old.

This girl was so SICKENING Bee couldn't stand it. She looked at her straight in the eye, but she just couldn't understand why a girl would be so cruel to her. Of course, she is a Slytherin and to Bee that mattered a lot. Slytherins were apparently rotton and mean to everyone, including pure bloods. She had always thought that maybe in her life time, Bee could meet a Slytherin with a good heart. Maybe that was why she had come over to see these two Slytherins. But, she had made a huge mistake, talking to this girl and the other girl who hadn't said anything yet. The girl that had been talking to Bee was rambling on to her about how her family had taught her all this stuff about who to know and who not to know and how she got in Slytherin and how her parents were the perfect pure match and........Bee wasn't listening any more. She was still looking at the girl, but her thought were almost jammed. This girl was talking to her like a five year old or younger. She had had enough. "If your parents had taught you who to know, then why didn't they say NOT Slytherin? If your parents were smart enough, maybe they would have told you to stay away from a sneering Slytherin. Did your perfect parents ever tell you that Slytherins were backstabbers? Apparently, they couldn't be smart and tell their dear perfect little daughter that Slytherins were the worst people worth knowing. Thank goodness they didn't though, because I wouldn't want you in my dormitory." Bee said all this in a calm voice. She was still looking at the girl with a smile that was actually true. She had said something worth saying now. Then, as she thought about her words she thought that maybe she had gone a little to far. "Oh yeah, what's your name anyway? I never made a point to remember a Slytherins name." She asked, not letting down her mean side. She couldn't be nice to this girl, because this girl would not be nice back and could attack if Bee let down her guard. It was as if Bee and this girl were fighting an invisible battle. It was too bad though, that it seemed like the girl was attacking with a pointed, sharp sword and all Bee had was a shield to hide behind.

Mary feigned shock as the girl gave some speech about how Slytherins are so terrible. “Slytherins backstab?! Are you serious? Oh how could I not know that… I must run right now, I must inform Dumbledore of my decision to switch houses. I can't stay with those smart enough to look after themselves… I have to let him I know I belong in Gryffindor with all the little twits who can trust each other because they are all so insecure as to care what everyone else thinks and therefore never do anything against another. Thank you dear girl; you have saved my life in more ways than one.” Mary said excitedly before stopping to smirk at the girl as her name was in question.
Everyone knows to have someone’s name is to have power over them – that’s why God would not reveal his name to Moses at the burning bush. So Mary simply raised an eyebrow at the girl as if she was insane; they were not on friendly terms so why on earth would she think Mary would give up her name? “To you, I am ‘Your Highness’.” Mary said with a smirk before continuing. “Now I would ask your name but… I simply don't care.” Mary spoke in harsh cold tones.

Bee felt as if she had been slapped. Of course, that was probably the girls purpose but she couldn't help it. This girl was a true Slytherin and Bee knew it. She could not get passed her defenses, but this girl could get passed Bees' shield, very easily. She didn't know why but this Slytherin could make Bee feel horrid and Bee didn't like that. But then again, who did? Maybe that was why everyone hated Slytherins. This girl was so smart and cruel, Bee couldn't stand her. She decided she would give this girl her name just to see if the Slytherin could recignize it. "Well, I am gonna give you my name, even if you don't want it. Have you ever heard of Bridget Vreeland before? Cause that's my name, but it's Bee for short." Bridget smiled at the girl, but it wasn't a real smile. She was thinking....what to do....what to do. She wanted to get away, far away from this Slytherin. And that's what she would do, except she would try to make it seem like she wasn't really trying to get away. 'I'm gonna get going anyway, since this conversation isn't going anywhere. I was heading outside until I ran into you and...uh..." Who was the girl at the railing? She guessed it was this girls' friend. "You and your friend. You could come with me if you like, or you could just go where ever you were going..." Bee knew it was a hopeless cass. This Slytherin, of all people, was not going to go walking with a Gryffindor. But, might as well try, since, who knows, she might say yes.....

Bee... the girl had a name; not just a name… a nickname. Only people have names… not random Gryffindors – people with feelings and lives are the ones with names and it hit Mary like a ton of bricks… she was being sadistic. She didn’t know where it came from but she was being just what she had professed not to understand since first year… a cliché Slytherin. That’s what this girl probably thought she was too… She couldn’t know how Mary despised her parents. She couldn’t know Mary’s best friend, after Kris, was a Ravenclaw half-blood; Dana was like a sister to Mary and yet… This girl… Bee… asked if they wanted to join her in a walk and Mary stared at her like a deer caught in the headlights… she had completely forgotten she was there and still speaking. She had to go… she had to get out of there… How could she have done that? And what's worse is she enjoyed it… Every glare the girl sent her, every flustered look, she had revelled in it – it had even fuelled her on; making her crueller and cruller still… It wasn’t her doing that… it wasn’t the Mary everybody knew… Mary had friends in every house… Well not Gryffindor, but she was on pleasant terms with a few… How had this happened? She needed to talk to someone; that’s it. She needed to go and find Kris, that’s what she would do, she would find Kris and they could talk it out. It wasn’t Mary doing this… surely not… She couldn’t find Kris though… last time they talked they had fought about Kris being foolish for insulting the Dark Lord. She couldn’t possibly now come running to him saying that she was frightened of this thing she had seen inside herself as she played cat and mouse with a Gryffindor… But she couldn’t go to Dana either…
“Umm I can't… sorry.” Mary said to the girl in a panicked tone before sprinting down the staircase… she had to find someone… anyone to talk to…
((Sorry Mary had to leave She would have gotten too OOC otherwise – I really was enjoying this thread though and it has helped push her character more than I anticipated; thank you ))

She was surprised. This girl, the one that had been cruel to Bee, was panicking. Bee had thought that this girl had no fear, just selfishness. Bee had tried to be nice to her a few times, but Bee, had just been stabbed back with some harsh words. It was a battle Bee had known that she couldn't win. But now, something was happening with this Slytherin. She was panicking and it showed on the outside. Bee didn't know what to do. Usually, she would have comforted the person who was feeling bad but this was different. This girl had insulted Bee, and Bee had tried to do the same thing, but the girl had just became more sarcastic. If it was her enemy that was feeling bad, Bee would have just got up and left, but for some reason, she just couldn't do that now. All she could do is watch the battle going on inside the girls head. She still didn't know her name, she was just the smirking girl to Bee. She had wanted to know her name, but the girl hadn't given in. Now, Bee felt confused. What was happening? She had tried to be nice and...now....the girl seemed to have had a change of heart. Bee looked at the girl and the girl looked back at her, her eyes wide. The next thing Bee knew, the girl was saying ".....Ummm I can't... sorry...." And that made Bee herself feel as if she had finally gotten to the girl, but Bee wasn't enjoying this. This was making her feel awful. Had she done something wrong to this Slytherin girl? She watched as the girl sprinted down the staircase. She had to say something... "Maybe sometime soon then." Bee shouted at the girl. She felt bad and she just wanted to say something that might make the girl feel a little better. She looked at the other Slytherin on the staircase and smiled. "Sorry, but I think I am gonna go....." and with that, Bee fled to the common room. She had had enough of Slytherins for one day. She had to think about that encounter though. It was all very confusing, but, as Bee looked out the window, she thought, "Maybe, I have found my kind-hearted Slytherin....."
(( That's alright! I enjoyed posting with you. This tested my character as well, and I thought I would make a little change in the thread just to have fun!!! ;D You are very welcome!))
