Feeling rather good about the day's work he'd put in, Liam decided not to try the spell to much more. Liam was more interested in watching Ayumi try the spell. He knew that she could do the spell because of what she had told him, so he understood the smile on her face when she finally did the spell properly. But, after she'd done the spell, Liam realized that Ayumi had jumped when Liam's book dropped on the table. "Sorry about that, Ayumi. I hope I didn't scare you to much."
Liam continued to watch all of the other students practicing the spell, noticing that some of them were rather good at this charm. Two of the ones good at the spell were Hufflepuff girls, and to Liam, they were some of the best in class.

Charms. It was the first thing Colin had on his schedule that day. He was slowly beginning to get to know the castle, but he still needed more time to know his way to the different classes, and the names of the Professors and other stuff. Colin followed another first year quietly he knew had Charms with and soon reached class.
"This should be interesting, but I hope I manage to follow all the instructions given," thought Colin a little worriedly. "I'm not sure I even know how to hold my wand correctly." He reached class feeling a little flustered and awkward, he was still not used to the flowing black robes the Hogwarts students wore as part of their uniform. The sight of the Professor perched on his group of books was somewhat comical and for a minute Colin didn't feel as nervous as he had been feeling a minute ago. Colin saw a familiar face seated in one of the front faces. It was Ayumi Kimoto who he had met in Diagon Alley before. Colin walked over to Ayumi and said "Hi," quietly, then sat down beside her.
The Professor, who had a kind and a rather wrinkled face, smiled at the class and then addressed them in cheerful voice. Colin listened to Professor Flitwick's introduction and thought that Professor Flitwick sounded like a nice Professor. Colin was quite sure he was going to make a lot mistakes in his first year, and was glad the professor said he would "not fret over small mistakes,", though Colin felt his mistakes might not be that small. At least the class was supposed to be fun.
Soon he asked a question about the importance of Charms, and Colin listened attentively as Ayumi enumerated the uses of some charms and their importance. Apparently she knew quite a bit about magic. The professor proceeded to explain their work of the day. They were going to learn how to make objects fly! Colin thought that was going to be really exciting.
The Professor showed them a swish and flick motion they were supposed to try and imitate, and Colin tried his best to copy the Professor. Then he told them the incantation they were supposed to chant while performing the motion and Colin set down his wand and joined in with the rest of the class as they repeated the words "Wingardium Leviosa". Now Professor Flitwick wanted them all to try and levitate their books using this new Charm, and Colin set down his Charms textbook before him and looked at it purposefully.
"Wingardiumleviosa," he said very quickly, swishing and flicking his wand. Nothing happened. Colin wasn't too worried; this was only his first try after all. He told himself to slow down and he did so the next time but still nothing happened. He tried this a few times more with no effect. Feeling a bit disheartened he looked around him and was a bit reassured that not too many people had managed to levitate their books. He also discovered he was going to have to say the incantation more clearly and separate the two words. Colin hoped it would work this time as he tried once more, stressing and lengthening the correct syllables of the incantation as he said it, and his book moved a bit to the right but didn't fly upwards.
Colin rolled up his sleeves and closed his eyes for a minute, willing himself to focus. He looked at one of the people who had succeeded, and realised he to move his hand on his wand; he was holding his wand too near the middle. Colin moved his hand down and tried again, concentrating on what he was doing. To his delight and surprise the book soared upwards, and it almost hit the ceiling before landing with a thud on the ground a few inches from Colin. He wanted to jump around excitedly but contained his happiness, and he felt a thrill of euphoria that he had finally managed to do the charm. He wiped the sweat from his brow and picked up the book, and then sat down again feeling excited about his success.

She looked over at the other students, many of which already had quills and books floating above their desks.
She looked back at her quil and lifted her wand again. mumbling the words to herself to make sure she was saying them correctly.
She then lifted her wand and waved it in a clockwise semi-circle, as she called the words
"Wingardium Leviosa"
Her quill didn't soar, but it lifted off the desk a few inches, and she grinned--overjoyed by her triumph. At least something had happened...

With a smile Filius watched all of his students attempt the spell. "Great Job everyone! Great Job!" He said as he raised his hands in the air so everyone would calm down and pay attention to him.
"You ll did exeptionally well, Congrats. Now we are going to start a second spell. This is called Mobiliarbus. It moves objects to a direction you want it to. Do not mistaken this spell with the spell accio, accio brings it to you, Mobiliarbus you direct where it goes." Filius nodded and clasped his hands as he went on about the spell. "Alright, so this is how you do this. I will use my.. candle." Pushing an Extinguished candle in front of him he pointed to the candle's base. "Alright first is a swoop to the left. Like a Half moon shape going down. Then a Flick." Demonstrating both movements. Filius raised his free hand. "Everyone Join in. Swoop Flick, Swoop Flick."
He waited for everyone to chime into the movement before he went on. "Alright the wording is Mobiliarbus. Pratice the wording a few times before you do the actually spell. Everyone watch how to do the spell before you begin." Saying the movements while he did the spell he went on. 'swoop' 'flick' Mobiliarbus! Moving his wand slightly to the left the candle base followed.
"Any question, ask Im here at your service!" He said with a smile "Begin!"

Ivy listened attentively as Professor Flitwick described another spell they were to attempt. She hardly remembered this one, but taking heart from her success in the last spell, she felt eager to attempt it.
She decided to move the present she had made Kiyla over the holidays onto Kiyla's desk. It wasn't fragile, containing an embroidered bookmark and embroidered notebook, so it should be allright.
She took the little package out of her bag. "Mobilarius!" she cried, soon realising she had totally mispronounced the spell as nothing happened.
She was still feeling happy. She practised the spell - 'Swoop flick, swoop, flick', she said, making the movements with her wand as she said the words. "Mobiliarbus!", she said with feeling, for a short while in control of the package, which she directed towards Kiyla. It moved at her command for a short while but had not made the whole distance before she was distracted and it fell to the floor with a soft 'thump'.
She was doing all right!, she thought excitedly, focusing on the package once more. She tried two more times, but realised she had lost her concentration.
Ivy forced herself to think only of the package in front of her, saying "Mobiliarbus!'" again, and realised she was in control of the package, if only for a short while. Her eyes screwed up in concentration, Ivy carefully manoeuvred the package, beautifully wrapped in gold paper with a silver ribbon on it, onto Kiyla's desk.
Ivy smiled, feeling a flush of success. She had always liked charms. Maybe she had finally found something she was good at.

She watched Professor Flitwick movew his wand in the distinctive swoop-flick motion and she tried to copt the motion. She kept thinking that she was making her swoosh to deep and then had a little to much happening from her elbow on her flick, but somehow, she coudln't seem to get it to work.
Mobiliarbus. She repeated the word a few times to herself, then mumbled it outloud. trying to figure out how to say it with out stumbling over it. She really wanted this spell to work.
She then put it all together, focusing on her quill, which seemed an easy enough thing to control.
Swoosh-flick-Mobiliarbus......Nothing.
She sighed, her face wrinking to a determined half-smile, and she attempted again.
Swoosh...Flick...Mobiliarbus. Nope. The quill still laid solidly ont he table.
Swoosh...Flick...MOBILIARBUS Nothing.
She sighed unhappily, and looked up for the professor wondering if he could help

Liam watched the professor do the spell before trying it himself. Liam practiced the swoop and flick a few times before setting his wand down. "Mobiliarbus. Mobiliarbus. Mobiliarbus," Liam said to himself. Then he picked up his wand and picked his target. Again using the book in front of him, Liam made the swoop and flick, then said, "Mobiliarbus." the book moved slightly to his left and stopped. Liam tried again, swoop, flick, "Mobiliarbus." The book moved to the right this time before stopping. Liam gave the spell one more try. Swoop, flick, "Mobiliarbus." This time the book rose off the desk, and Liam made the book go around the room before setting it back on his desk.

Watching the class attempt the Mobiliarbus spell, Filius noticed Nokomis was having a tad bit of trouble. Standing up from his seat he walked over to her desk as she looked at him in distress. "Hello Nokomis. I see you are having slight difficulty. Try this." Holding his wand at ready and in full view of her he started. "Think of a clock in front of you. You want to go from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, but you have to go past every number between. So follow the clock." Demonstrationg he started his wand at "3" and he spoke. "Its a Swoop to 9." he went on as he ended. "Then when you reach '9 o'clock you pull backward and point fowards, 'flick" Do it with me now. Swoop.... Flick.." Smiling at the young Hufflepuff he spoke again. "Now try on your own Dear."

Kiyla was so happy with herself for doing so well with the other Charm that she was ready to do this one. She cleared her thoughts of everything, turned to her book again and did the 'swoop', 'flick' motion while saying, "Mobiliarbas!"and nothing happened. Kiyla srill all smiles looked at the book and did the motion again while saying "Mobiliarbus!" and the book moved to the left slowly then stopped. Smiling a little to herself Kiyla decided to try once more. Kiyla did the 'swoop' 'flick' motion and was saying, "Mobiliarbus when a beautifully raped package stopped in front of her on her desk. "What the heck?" Kiyla said confused. She looked at the package like she was waiting for it to blow up. When nothing happened Kiyla picked up the package carefully and thought, "Maybe someone accidently put it over here." She turned to Ivy to see her in all smiles. "Um... is this yours?" Kiyla said holding out the package to Ivy looking more confused then ever.

She listened intently to Professor Flickwick, wrinkling her face again as she focused on the action, trying to picture a click before her as she moved her wand along the numbers, pausing for a moment at 9' to glance and the professor again before moving her wrist back and forwards again. It certinly was better than her last attempt--and she smiled at the results.
"Like that?"

Ivy smiled even more broadly at Kiyla's confusion. "No, it's for you," she said. "Go on, open it." Ivy waited expectantly, hoping that Kiyla had got the hang of the spell.

Watching Nokomis attepmt the spell the results were perfect. "Good work! You are getting so much better. By the end of the year you will be a pro." With a smile Filius turned around and went back to his seat. Raising his hands he calmed the class down as he pointed to the chalk board behind him.
-- Homework is a 100 word essay on the two spells we did in class. How you do the spells and what you need to keep in mind while you do them.--
Turning to the class Filius sounded. "Good work today, everyone, read the homework and get it done promptly." he said as he pointed his wand to the door which opened so students were free to go.
(( This homework is due September 13, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Send your assignments to fourhousesprofessors@hotmail.com, Let your email contain Your character's name and year. ))

Kiyla laughed at herself when she realized that Ivy was giving the gift to her. She smiled broadly and was about to open the gift when the Professor dismissed the class with a homework assiagnment. Kiyla smiled as she packed up her belongings when she realized she forgot to do something earlier that morning. She quickly packed her things, along with the package, and rushed out the room while saying, "See you in Ancient Runes!" to Ivy.

Ivy smiled warmly at Kiyla and wrote down the homework in her small, leather backed diary. Kiyla said something to her before rushing out of the room, but Ivy could not make it out and Kiyla was soon out of sight. She sighed, packed up her things and waited for Nokomis before walking out of the Charms classroom, her first essay of the year demanding to be written.

"Mobiliarbus? Accio? I don't think I'll mix up any spells yet, because I don;t know any," thought Colin wondering how many charms they were going to learn that year and how difficult they were going to be. Anyway both the charms he had learnt today, or actually the one he had learnt and the one he was going to attempt to learn were really cool.
Colin said the incantation several times, and tried out the motions Professor Flitwick showed them. However his attempts at moving his book were unsuccessful. The book did not move at all although Colin tried as hard as he could to pronounce the incantation correctly and imitate Professor Flitwick's motions. When Professor Flitwick went over to help a girl Colin went over and listened to all he said and tried again. This time it worked and Colin took his book back to his desk and tried it again while he still had the hang of the spell.
Soon class was almost over and Colin copied down his homework, wondering if he would ever get used to using his quill as he tried not to smudge the ink on his parchment. He picked up all his school stuff and left class to go off to the common room, which he had been shown by the prefect on the first day. Charms hadn't gone too badly, he hoped his other classes would be OK. Colin decided not to worry and instead concentrated on what he had learnt in his first class. He could make things fly, and that was definitely an achievement! No need to worry about the unknown for now.
