Ivy woke fairly early that morning. She hadn't slept very well since her father died. Occasionally she had, when she had worn herself to sleep crying. But that was no longer how she felt. She didn't feel constant despair, she just felt a large, empty hole. Which going home for Christmas had rung home to her. The empty house. No father. All neat and tidy. Even his book still in the same place on the bedside table.
Ivy dressed and breakfasted while her dorm-mates were still asleep, and took the extra time to take a walk around the frozen lake. It was good for clearing her thoughts, at least. Ivy knew that she was lucky, if not in the way of family, at least in the way of friends. Fanny had proven herself to be as good a friend both to Ivy and to her father as she could be. Kiyla had been really supportive, and the others had been great in sensing when to talk about it and when not to. But Ivy was still withdrawn at the moment. She might come out in time, but not now.
Ivy timed her entrance to the Herbology class specifically so that she wouldn't be noticed. She didn't feel like talking at the moment. While many of the other students were also entering the classroom, Ivy did so also. That way she probably wouldn't be seen in the crowd. Ivy took a seat on her own fairly near the back of the greenhouse. It was certainly warmer in here than outside, which was pleasant, since Ivy had been out in the cold for a long time.
Herbology was not Ivy's strongest class. She didn't fare too badly in it, but she was not outstanding in it by any means. She looked with vague interest at what they would be studying as Professor Sprout called out to start the class. The Professor asked a question that no doubt Ivy could have answered had she applied her mind to it, but she didn't feel ready to today. She would just be quiet for the moment and listen to what everyone else had to say.

Sapphire arrived for class punctually as usual, and took a seat by Molly, smiling at her and Jasmine, the only people present who she really knew at all. Jasmine left shortly before the lesson commenced, and Sapphire had not been particularly early for the lesson, despite the fact she had not been late.
Herbology was by no means Sapphire's favourite subject. She wasn't what you would call green-fingered, but she wasn't too bad with plants. She liked the extra surprise that magical plants gave you. As Professor Sprout began to ask a question, she took out a heavily-bound notebook that she used for Herbology and started to copy down everything that the Professor had written and said. That was the way she succeeded in this subject.

Pomona waited for a a few students to raise there hands. First, it was a girl by the name of Vanessa Nicholson. Second, it was Jasmine Anderson. "Good, Good. Miss Nicholson you may go first. Directly after her, Miss Anderson may say her part. Everyone else may put their hands down now. Sorry I couldnt not get to you."
Pomona waited for the two young girls to speak their part of the question.

Vanessa smiled, "Well, Herbology is a mandatory course because, there are many things in Herbology that you may use later on in life. Say, one of your relatives or friends got sick and you needed to know what type of herb to put in their drink to heal them...and you didn't know, what would you do? So, I suppose that in a way, you need Herbology." She answered, surprisingly she did stutter and this made her smile even more. She waited to see if her answer was correct. She knew her Aunt and Uncle used Herbology a lot around the house, when ever she was sick Taylor would make her drink something she had made with special herbs.

Jasmine smiled as Professor Sprout called on Vanessa and her. Listening the half Vanessa had to say she nodded her head as she basically give the correct answer. Taking a deep breath she started to speak, "Well Vanessa basically said what Herbology is used for. Its quite interesting the many herbs that can be used in many daily medicines and other things. But some herbs can really be harmful to anyone if not used probably. Also muggles use herbs in their daily life like making shampoos and other useful products. But some muggles are distorying wild life and there isn’t enough population of plants that can help." Jasmine said taking another deep breath and hoping her answer was some what okay. Herbology wasn’t her strong class but it was quite interesting to learn the herbs that can help many things.

Amelia had been doing he rmorning dance when she looked at her clock. 5 minutes! She stood up straight with eyes wide and she grabbed her tie and robes, pulling on her shoes.4 minutes! She shut off her stereo and bolted down the stairs. Her eyes closed as she ran down the steps, her mind pleading for the time to stop and her nto to be late. She opened her eyes again and ran faster still. 2 minutes. She was outside in a few seconds, not stoping to shut the great double doors. INstead she ran as fast as she could torward the green houses. 1 minute! She was so close.
Sliding in sideways, she panted. The room was so quiet as she entered. It was very strange to be sitting in class when suddenly a girl runs in. Amelia looked at Professor Sprout, trying her best to catch her breath quickly.
"Am I late, professor?" her heart beat wildly at how fast she had been running.

Millicent woke up early that day with thoughts in her head of classes, homework, and boredom. She took as long as possible in putting on her school attire. When she finally had her boring, ugly, flat shoes on her feet and the rest of her uniform in place she walked over to the mirror. She re-adjusted her tie so that it was loose enough to show she did not care for this outfit but tight enough the teachers couldn’t say a thing about it. She then pulled a brush through her long black hair until it was knot free. Looking at the clock as she pulled her hair up into a ponytail she noticed she still had half an hour until class. Slowly she dragged her feet up into the Great Hall where she plopped down at the first table, the Slytherin table, and ate her breakfast. Toast ingested she looked at the clock again Millicent and saw fifteen minutes still left.
Not wanting to be on time Millicent walked back down to the common room where she took a seat by the fire. She took out her Herbology book seeing as that was the class she had next. She read until she saw a little third year pass by, obviously worried about being late. Millicent laughed at her and all the students with such enthusiasm and passion for class. Placing the book back into her bag Millicent slowly walked up the steps into the entrance hall. Once there she stopped and put on a warm dark green cloak and stepped outside. She slowly made her way to Greenhouse Four and stood at the door to make sure class had begun. She then pushed open the door as obtrusively as possible and stomped into the classroom. She heard a Hufflepuff girl answering a question obviously put forward by Professor Sprout. She also saw another girl standing at the front asking if she was late. Millicent chuckled to herself and walked up the isle. She was not looking to sit with anybody in particular, she could just as easily slipped into a seat near the back, but she was making a point. When she reached the centre of the large table she took at seat and stared at the other girl who had taken up answering.

Post by Samantha Driscoll on Jan 16, 2005 16:28:22 GMT
Herbology… the very sound of the word was enough to fill her with fury. Nevertheless Samantha walked in as cool and self-composed as ever into class, set her dragon hide gloves and parchment on the table in front after a quick disdainful glance around her at the greenhouse and the students inside it. She sat down at the table as close to Professor Sprout as possible feeling annoyed that everyone was to work on the same table, smoothed down her hair which was a dark red today and waited for the class to begin. None of the Slytherins had arrived except for one and she was sitting with non-purebloods so Samantha hadn't sat beside her. "I wonder if Charles has arrived yet… there he is, sitting with those worthless friends of his," she thought with a scathing glance at her brother. She had been very surprised to learn that he had somehow managed to get the money to go on the trip, and though she was curious to know how he had done so she wasn't going to ask him.
Some people liked the Herbology class because it was an outdoors class and a change from sitting inside a classroom all day long, but not Samantha. She was not an outdoors person at all, and had never enjoyed getting all muddy and sweaty and working with a plant that gave you a hard time more often than not. She crossed one leg over the other and gave Professor Sprout her full attention hoping their task for the day would be less tiring than usual and almost sneered when heard her question to the class. "Why is Herbology a mandatory class? Is there really any other reason that a lot of what we learn here is useless and since Herbology is the most useless thing it has to be made mandatory?" thought Samantha. She started taking copious notes of the plant drawn on the blackboard, thinking that would be a bit important than listening to the answer of the question. She was going to listen anyway, but she might as well make use of her time copying the notes before they started working with the plant.

"Very good, both of you. +5 Points to each of your houses!" Pomona said with a smile. Soon after the green house door opened with two students walking in late. "Good to know you would at least show up. But in this class I do not accept late people. 5 points from each of your houses." She said as she motioned for them to sit down.
Walking up to the main table where everyone sat at she picked up a pot and showed it to everyone. “Everyone has one of these plants in front of them. As some of you may have read on the chalkboard this is called a Neltivhert.” Holding up a plant with large brown leaves that looked like it has died in a heat of the summer, laid on top of the dirt in the pot.
“A Neltivhert root is used to make other plants grow abnormally large, but with the most brilliant colors ever seen from that species of that plant.” Motioning to the ceiling she spoke out, “Neltivhert root I used on my Sunflowers.” With a smiled she looked down at the students.
Setting the plant down she started up again. “The roots usually are a brilliant color of yellow, unlike the part of the Neltivhert that is above the top layer of dirt. Today you will dig get the root and put it into a jar of water which will keep the root well nourished until I plant these into the Southern Courtyard and in a few weeks you all will notice the difference in plants there” She said with a brilliant smile as she picked up protective gloves. “Remember everyone the Neltivhert root is horrible to touch with bare skin. Large boils appear on the skin and extremely hard to get rid of. The last time I did this in one of my Herbology classes a dear boy of the name Brian Higtor, he didn’t listen.” Shaking her head she looked around her class. “Oh never mind my story, I wouldn’t like to get you all scared over nothing.” With a nod she put on her gloves. Turning towards her right she started to walk around the table and watch the students, “You all my begin now, But remember the roots are very sensitive one puncture they will send off a horrid smell.” She warned as she waited for the first few people to begin.

*Pyro reached into his pockets and pulled out his clothes...he frowned down at the plant in front of him as he slipped on the gloves. 'one puncture...better dig with my hands than' he thought, he reached in with his hand and began to scoop out the dirt, searching for the root of the plant*

Dana listened to Professor Sprouts explanation about the plants and pulled the pot in front of her closer to her, while pulling on some gloves, which she always carried along to Herbology and Potions classes and starting to dig the root out.
“Do you plant the whole root down, professor? And if yes, then how does it reach the other plants. If you use them at the courtyard, then will the root affect only the Sunflowers or the grass around it as well? And how many plants one of these roots will affect?” Dana asked professor Sprout, briefly wondering, if she should have raised her hand, but she was already digging the dirt, so she just shrugged it off.
Dana peered closer as she saw something yellow between the dirt and slowed her movements, carefully cleaning dirt off, until about half of the root was bared. Then she took the upped part of the Neltivhurt in her right hand and pulled, while helping the root go up slowly with the left hand.
Dana eyed the root curiously, tangling it before her eyes, before shrugging off her left glove and pulling closer the water jar and placed the root in it, then turned to professor Sprout once again, to hear her answer.

Vanessa smiled as she was awarded five points. She then looked at Jasmine as they began to dig for the roots. Her gloved hands digging gently through the dirt so she wouldn't harm the brilliant root. Her eyes were peering down into the dirt and her hands worked just as gently as her eyes seemed to appear being.
"Yellow, right?" She asked Jasmine and herself in a sort of curious tone of voice. Her hands worked around clumps of soil and other things before she finally saw the yellow of the root. She brushed the top of the root off gently before uncovering the rest of it. Digging her left hand under the whole root gently, she lifted it up and pulled with her right hand. Once it was out of the pot she let it fall gently into the pitcher of water.

Jasmine smiled as she gained five points for Ravenclaw. Tucking hair behind her ears she searched in her shoulder bag for her note book. Digging around she picked up a light blue note book and sat it down on the table in front of her. Opening it up to a fresh page she dipped her quill into an ink tray and crossed her legs again. Looking up at the Professor she started to copy notes from what she was saying. Once she had fished she put her quill in the ink tray and turned towards the pot the lay in front of her. Smiling she looked at her notes over again and pulled on gloves. She really didn’t won’t to get boils and she felt some what sorry for the boy who did.
Digging in the dirt gently she looked around for a yellow root. She really didn’t like Herbology all that much because she got dirty but oh well it was the reason for learning. Smiling she looked up at Vanessa who asked her if the root was yellow. Nodding her head she diged more gently at the dirt. Were they going to use these roots for Potions class because if she was she knew what the potion might be? Smiling she diged up a yellow root. Gently brushing off dirt on it she picked it up and put it in the glass of water. Smiling even more she crossed her legs again and looked up at the Professor the next set of directions.

Soon after Pomona told everyone to try on their own- Dana spoke up. She was allowed to. Pomona listened and replied. "Yes, the whole root. Well, I would infuse together on the Neltivhert root what plant I would like to make grow. For instance let me use my sunflowers. I took a petal and infused it on the root. You will learn how to do that in Charms class." she said with a smile as she kept speaking. "After that you would plant the root somewhere in a foot radus of the plant. As the Neltivhert root begins to grown- it will seek out the plant it was directed to and replenish it to its full capicity."
"I do hope that asnwered some of your question dear. Anyone else- feel free to ask anything!" Pomona said with a grin and watched some students react to the root.

“Yep, that explained a lot, professor,” Dana prodded the root very gently, so not to make it smell and examined it in the water carefully, before reaching over and since she was finished with that root pulled over an other root, as she figured she might as well, take that one out as well.
She started to dig around the pot gently, to find the yellow root, while glancing around to see how others were doing.

Mary was upset and gave a little pout as Professor Sprout took 5 points from Slytherin; they were already behind anyways. She sat there sulking as Professor Sprout explained what the plants sitting in front of them were used for. As she ceased speaking Mary pulled the gloves onto her hand detesting the feel of them restricting her fingers. She shrugged it off as a necessary bother though, she would much rather feel her soft dragonhide gloves then the nasty dirt that gets under your nails and makes everything dirty even after you have washed you hands. Mary felt around with her right hand, peering intently waiting for any sign of yellow in the pot as Dana asked a question and was answered. Finally Mary saw the root and gently tried to place her fingers beneath it so she could lift it out. After what seemed like an hour of gentle pulling and pushing the root was finally out; Mary titled her hand and allowed the root to gracefully plop into the water. Picking up the jar Mary swirled the water around and watched the root do an odd sort of dance that made Mary giggle. “You two done?” she asked Jersey and Pyro quietly, too amused to look.

Jasmine has gained five points for Ravenclaw and Judith could not have been more pleased. She smiled as she slipped her soft gloves onto her hands. She was about to begin her search for the Neltivhert root when Dana asked a question. Judith looked over at the girl sitting beside her hoping that she would not loose points for not having put her hand up. Judith listened intently to Professor Sprouts answer and wrote it in her notepad because she had not yet begun to dig. When she was finished writing Judith dug her right hand deep into the plant and began sifting through the dirt looking to either felt the root or push it to the top where she would see the bright yellow. When Judith final found the root she pushed the pot aside with her elbow and brought the jar of water in front of her with her left hand. She then dropped the root into the jar with a small clunk. Not knowing what to do next Judith watched as Dana began work on her second root.

Millicent rolled her eyes and Professor Sprout took five points from her simply because she was late. Millicent had thought it good she had bothered to show up at all never mind so quickly. Shrugging it off she stared blankly at Professor Sprout as she told the class what to do and what the plant was in front of them. Millicent took a pair of gloves out of her bag and began prodding around the pot with a revolted look on her face. Oh gosh how she despised dirt and silly little plant that just sit there; even worse are the ones that do things, like bite. Finally she uncovered a bit of yellow and began focusing on that main area. “Why am I here again?” she whispered to Samantha, a fellow sixth year Slytherin. She then pulled out the root and dropped it into the jar in a very nonchalant way and looked around bored.
