Kyle bolted through the halls of Hogwarts, his owl, Virgo, speeding behind. He skidded to a halt and turned down another hallway, racing down a staircase. He split up small groups of students as he bolted through. After almost tripping down four flights of stairs, Kyle finally made it to the front doors. He opened the doors, cool night air rushing to meet him and ran to the lake's edge.
He doubled over panting for breath, his chest heaving as he tried to fill his lungs with air. He fell to the ground, the blades of grass tickling the back of his kneck, his arms stretched out as he gasped for breath. When he could finally breath correctly, Kyle looked to the letter clenched tightly in one hand. He sat up and took another deep breath, trying to steady his thumping heart. The brown owl flapped down to his shoulder, a slight nibble at Kyle's ear. The white tips of Virgos wings flashed in the corner of Kyle's brown eyes as the owl landed softly on his shoulder.
He looked to the letter in his hand, a smile gracing his lips. He slowly read the name written in gold ink on the front of the envelope.
Kyle licked his lips in anticipation. He hadn't thought his father would send a reply to his letter. Naturally Kyle had hoped he would, but never-the-less he hadn't expected it. He slowly broke the seal of the envelope with shaking hands. It had been two years since he had last spoken to his father and Kyle figured that his father would be too angry with him to reply.
The enveloped opened with the soft noise that announced it was open and Kyle slowly slid his fingers inside to reach for the letter. To his surprise the tips of his fingers touched metal. Kyle, feeling confused, tipped the envelope over and out slid a necklace and a folded piece of paper. Kyle picked up the necklace and studied it. The chain was old, thin and a small charm was hanging from it. The metal charm was in the shape of an eagle, its wings spread wide, a small K could be seen welded to the eagle's chest. Kyle blinked in surprise. It was handmade, that much was certain.
Kyle turned to the letter. It read:
Dear Kyle,
I was shocked when I recieved your letter. Partly because I thought you hated me, and the other part because an owl brought it to me. Kaleb misses you so very much, Kyle. He asks me about you all the time. Please come see him, come see us, this summer? We would love to have you. Kaity wishes to meet you, I've told her all about you. Kaleb even brags about you to his little girlfriend, Melissa.
I must ask, though, why you wanted to badly to speak with me? Its been two years, Kyle, what made you want to get a hold of me? Its not that I didn't love hearing from you, its just that I was surprised. Please reply... and say that you'll come to visit this summer?
And I made that necklace for you. You don't have to wear it, of course. I just thought you would like it. Kaity loves it too. It was acually her idea.
Always,
Joe
Kyle sighed as he set the letter down. How could he not have seen this coming? Of course his father would imidiatly invite him over. Kyle sighed again, his brain racing with a million thoughts. What should he do? Should he ask his mother? Why does Kaleb want to see him so badly? Kyle shook his head and ran his infex finger over the surface of the 'K' and the eagle charm. His shoulders slumped as he realized, he didn't know what to say... he wasn't sure if he should go to Montana. Kyle fell backwards onto his back and closed his eyes, confusion ripping through his being.
