Cass snoozed on top of the book. It was a glorious day outside. The sky was blue, the grass was green, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Deciding to study outside today had been a no brainer. At the end of classes, she promptly grabbed one of the blankets off her bed and grabbed the transfiguration books that McGonogall had given her. She placed the blanket on the ground and promptly began to study the complex equations that she had to master to become an animagi.
After a couple of hours of complex work, she had nodded off. Finally waking up, she stretched her hands to the sky. Looking at her arms, she noticed the hint of a familiar red color. " Oh damn! I'm sunburned. I'm going to look like a lobster for days." Knowing her next visit was going to be the hospital wing in hopes that Madam Pomfrey had a quick cure, she began to close her books and load up the parchment she had been writing notes on. After finally managing to fold up the blanket to a manageable dimension, she saw a familiar figure come over the horizon.
Oh no, I really don't need this right now, she thought to herself.

Mary was up, out of her chair, and racing to the door the moment class let out. She made a beeline for the dungeons completely disregarding the people she may or may not have bowled over; she didn’t care enough to check. As she burst through the doors to the third year girl’s dorm she immediately got up on her bed and began jumping. It was Friday; she could finally take a night off from homework and studying and just enjoy the fine spring weather. Not that she could tell the weather down in the dungeons under the lake with no windows… No she would have to fix that… Mary hopped down from her bed and changed as quickly as possible into a blue tee-shirt and some black jeans. She contemplated wearing a pair of stiletto heel black boots but knew the heels wouldn’t allow her to walk in the grass. Disappointed Mary put on a much less used pair of black boots that had a shorter, wider heel.
She strolled out onto the grounds with a wide grin glad for the feeling of the sun on her face. She closed her eyes and spun around; when she opened her eyes though she saw a familiar form not too far away. In a good mood Mary decided it was about time she got to know the infamous Cassandra who was friends with so many of Mary’s. Mary waved at Cassandra before coming over.
“Mind if I join you?” she asked standing next to the blanket Cass was resting on with her textbooks. “You had best get that looked at by Pomfrey by the way; I don't think skin is supposed to go that pink…” Mary said indicating Cassandra’s sunburn. Mary had seen people with pink noses like that before but she could never figure out what it was from. Mary was more an indoor girl with naturally pale skin. Even when she would go out in the summer she never got burnt because of some potion her mother had her take in her juice every morning. Mary didn’t know what it did but her whole family had always drank it and her mother said it was to keep her skin from becoming discoloured so she didn’t argue.

Cass stared at Mary as she ran up and sat on the blanket. She blinked her eyes a couple of times, surprised at how bubbly Mary was being. Their last meeting did not end on all that good of a note, neither had any of their previous meetings.
She smiled as warmly as she possibly could. " Sure Mary. Your more than welcome to join me. Oh, and I will go see her about it. I can't believe that I actually fell asleep out here. It's quite embarrasing. I look like a lobster. I have that whole fair skin problem, too. However, I do tan if I don't stay out to long."
Cassandra pulled out some Jelly Beans from her bag. " Want some? They are not Bertie Botts but they are just as good. Not as dangerous either. You don't have to worry about getting all the wierd flavors. So, why are you in such a good mood today?

As soon as Cass said she was allowed Mary plopped down onto the blanket that was just like the one from her dorm but red instead of green. She had known they wouldn’t decorate the other houses in Slytherin colours but it was still odd for her to see the red blanket she was now sitting on.
As she marvelled at the colour red Cassandra spoke of how falling asleep in the sun had done such a monstrous thing to her skin. “Fair skin problem? Get a tan? Sorry I am lost… what’s the problem with your skin? It usually looks ok its just a bit pink at the moment… Do you mean you tan when you stay out too long and it discolours? Oh I am so sorry about your condition. That must be terribly freighting, having your skin change colour. I can not imagine…” Mary said truly sympathetic and frightened at the prospect of waking up one day with hot pink skin because she stayed out in the sun. Paranoid she glanced down at her own naturally ivory arms relived to see they were as pale as ever.
As she was expressing her concern Cassandra offered her what she thought were every flavour beans but she was apparently wrong. Curious Mary picked up a black one and tossed it in her mouth. It was slightly tart and yet obviously packed with sugar… she sucked on it in her mouth for a bit as the candy coating disappeared and she discovered some sort of stiff gummy… “Mmm” she said quite enjoying it. “What is it?” she asked surprised she had never encountered this candy before; it must be a muggle creation.

Cass stared at the girl, wondering if she was serious or not. Realizing she was, she attempted to explain. " Um no. It's not a condition." Answering truly puzzled. " It's what happens if you don't take that concoction you talked about or if you don't put on sunscreen. There is a chemical in your skin that comes up. It tans your skin."
Cass smiled as Mary gave her approval of the sweets. " They are sort of like Bertie Botts. It's the same concept, you just don't get all the yucky flavors. Lot safer that way. Oh, you'll like these too."
She pulled out some licorice sticks. " Like licorice? I love it. I've got some Snickers in here somewhere too...." She trailed off as she started rummagging through her bag. She pulled out several candy bars wrapped in brown cellophane, and some black sticks in clear plastic. " I keep forgetting you've never had Muggle sweets before." She giggled. " I remembered I gave Pyro some iced tea and he nearly freaked out."

Mary shrugged losing interest in the subject as Cass explained it wasn’t a condition and Mary continued to suck the coating off the proffered sweets. Cass then offered something called licorice and Mary continued to eat. She raised an eyebrow though as Cass mentioned Pyro’s reaction to a muggle drink. “Well I can most certainly understand why he would freak out… You put ice in your tea? Why in blue blazes would you wish to do that?” She asked while flopping down onto the blanket.
Laying there staring at the sky Mary began to pick at the grass beside the blanket absentmindedly. “So tell me Cassandra…” she began looking up at the girl beside her, “three years of classes together, an abundance of mutual friends, and yet we barely know each other… How on Earth does that happen?” she asked curiously; stripping a piece of grass between her fingers.

Cass looked over at Mary. Well, I can think of several reasons why, she thougth to herself.
However, Cass smiled. She rubbed the back of her head and blushed a bit. " Well, are last two meetings didn't go very well did they. We don't exactly have the same personalties you know, and normally Slyths and Gryffs don't hang out that often." Cass looked up at the sky for a moment. " But now that I think about it, I haven't really let that stop me, have I?"
She smiled when Mary made a remark about the iced tea. " I actually went to the southern United States once, and that is what everyone drinks there. Pyro thought it was wierd, but he actually said it was pretty good." She could tell that Mar was thoroughtly enjoying the Jelly Beans.
" If you'd like, I can get my Mom to send you some of those. I have finally talked my Mom into getting an owl. It's really funny. Everytime time the owl flutters its wings she jumps a foot." Cass laughed, wondering if Mary would find it funny.

Cassandra brought up a good point when she said that their last two meetings hadn’t exactly been pleasant… but neither of them could really be blamed for that. “Well… I mean there were more important things to attend to than introductions… You were threatening one of my friends; it wasn’t the time for pleasantries. And Pyro’s future was at stake… But I get what you mean.” Mary said absentmindedly.
When Cass mentioned having her mother send some of those candies to Mary she gave an embarrassed sort of grin, very rare for Mary, was her enjoyment truly that apparent? Mary didn’t know where all this expression was coming from and she didn’t like it at all; lately she had been withdrawing from other houses and she hadn’t minded a bit. But now with Cass she was acting as she would were she lounging around with a dorm mate… Mary whipped her face clean hoping her moment of disconcert went unnoticed as Cassandra laughed about her mother being frightened by their owl. “Oh we keep our owls in the owlery in the north wing so I don't really know how much the owl would flutter but I can imagine… Why don't you keep the bird here at school with you then if he puts your mother off so much? I can't imagine not liking owls though; I adore my Basil. He is a very cute eagle owl; the only pet I am allowed in fact.”<br>

Cass smiled as Mary talked so affectionately about her pet. " Well, I do have Ringo here, my cat, and you know there is that restriction about animals. I've had Ringo since I was two so it would be very hard to send him home to Mom. I think, I would miss too much. Besides, I do want her to get used to owl post. My mother and I hardly communicated during the school year before this since we never had one before. I would really like her to get used to him first." She sighed. " I haven't even named him yet. I need to come up with a good name."
She stretched her arms to the sky. " God, I feel like I've been cooped up in the castle all day. Makes me feel like I've been cramped up in a box all day."
Speaking of Pyro, " I'm really worried about him." Concern passed over her face, she truly was worried about him. She knew what it felt to be rejected from your family. However, she was being rejected for being a witch, not for embarrasing the family. " I hope he's okay. I would do anything to help him."

Mary smiled at Cassandra as she mentioned having felt cramped in the castle all day. “Yes, it can become quite suffocating can it not? Try spending most your time down in the dungeons with no windows because you are underwater… I wouldn’t want to be any other place though…” Mary said with a half grin but half smirk as well.
Her amusement changed to a more sombre mood though as Cass brought up her worry for Pyro; she had had similar feelings at times… But she smiled at Cassandra and explained it the way she saw it; an optimistic point of view for once. “We shouldn’t worry about him though; he’s a big boy. And he has been dealing with his family his whole life, plus I don't think this is so unexpected. Not to mention he has so many people around more than willing to help him… I'm sure he will pull out of this just fine.” Mary said in what she hoped was a reassuring voice.

Cass' head dipped a little as Mary said that Pyro would be fine. She just didn't understand how helpless Cass felt to help him. She sighed. " I know he will be fine, but you just don't know how....nevermind." She strayed off the subject, not really wanting to let Mary know how she really felt about it. No matter how much she wanted to tell someone, she just really didn't think Mary would understand.
Cass giggle a bit as Mary mentioned how dark the Slytherin Common Room was. " We don't have to worry about that in the tower. It's always really warm and light in there. There is just so many people in the Common Room! You know us Gryffindors, we just love to show off in front of each other."

The topic of Pyro was brushed off and Mary smiled happily, glad they wouldn’t have to discuss something so heavy on such a lovely day. Cass then went on to talk about how light and warm the Gryffindor common room is and Mary raised an eyebrow at her, curiosity getting the better of her. “You know I have always wondered… how do you sleep at night knowing you are in such an insecure area? All those windows and none appear to have bars… I mean someone could just fly up to the window and watch you guys; or worse kick it in and enter themselves… Remember in our first year when Sirius Black was after Harry? Well he still is I suppose… I never understood why they kept him there… I mean Black could easily get in through the window and out faster than anything… Found his own way in though didn’t he? But back to my question… how do you feel safe way up there with so many windows?” Mary asked finally, babble through.
