The sun was shining, the air was fresh and pleasantly warm and a few wispy white clouds was sheltering the Courtyard from any overly intense heat. Under the sun sat Jake Hurtsner, alone due to the fact that every other Ravenclaw in his year seemed to have disappeared to the library to do their homework. Jake was in no mood to join them, and the lure of the cool breeze gently wafting through the window next to his desk in Charms had helped to secure his decision. As soon as the bell had rung Jake had headed for the Courtyard, though going via his dorm to pick up his most prized possession, his guitar.
Jake had chosen a bench opposite the fountain, stone and carved intricatley. He had been there for half an hour or so, enjoying the weather, listening into other people's conversations and watching a few fourth-year girls on the opposite side of the fountain, all the time strumming at his guitar and humming to himself. As he plucked a few strings he noticed another person join the crowd in the Courtyard. A girl about his age. He knew they hadn't spoken before but she was familiar looking, most probably from classes. He smiled at her and began to strike up chords again, his head bowed down to the guitar.

"Later, Kor, okay?" Dix rolled her eyes and parted from the blonde haired girl who she was always seen hanging around. Dixie wanted freedom from Kori Williams, freedom from the artsy dancer her best-friend was. Then again, Kori was the only person who let Dix be herself. Dixie sighed and pulled her sunglasses down over her chocolate brown eyes. She went into the courtyard, which was bustling with energy, "Great." She muttered, quite agitated by the energy that was being thrown out. The wind swept up and brushed back her brown hair as she walked through the groups of people. Her grey shoulderbag banging against her side and she could hear the galleons and knuts jingling in it.
Besides the melodic jingle of her money, there was a strumming of a familar instrument. A guitar. Dix whipped her head around in all directions, looking for that sweet sweet guitar. Finally, her eyes locked on it and saw who was playing it. Someone who looked familiar. Dixie smiled warmly, as warm as a Slytherin could smile, and walked towards the guy playing. The wind swept again, and it swept her cloak back, snapping at someone. Dix let out a small supressed giggle and walked over, "You're pretty good at that." She greeted.

Jake looked up to see the girl that had he had just been looking at standing infront of him, a smile upon her face. She looked even more familiar up close and Jake's mind put her next to the only Slytherin he had ever spoken to, Kori Williams. As he thought this he could remember a few lunch-times, watching them on the Slytherin table.
"I like to think so," Jake said, a smile surling on his lips, "I'm Jacob Hurstner...Jake." He corrected, wondering why he had called himself Jacob. No-one had called him that since - well since ever. It was a strange oocurence to happen but he didn't stop to marvel and switched his gaze back to the girl.

"Dixie Holden, but please call me Dix. Dixie sounds so childish." She replied with a smile. Jake Hurstner, and that name sounded familiar...why? Shifting the weight of her shoulderbag to her left shoulder, Dix lifted her sunglasses up and placed them on top her head. The wind swept by again and caused her hair to blow back, making it a knotted mess. She didn't care. Instead she sat down next to Jake and looked at his guitar.
"How long have you been playing?" Dixie asked with a curious tone. She ran her fingers through her hair, making the knots fall into loose curls, and waited for his answer. Dix wasn't very musical, the only thing she could do was- nothing. She had no hobbies. Didn't sing, dance, draw, write. She just read and kept to herself. She knew gymnastics but, that wasn't enough to inspire her to become something more than what she is already. And she envied those who did have something like that.

"Nice to meet you Dix," Jake said pleasantly, gesturing to the space next to him to invite her to sit down. He was a naturally friendly person and relished in meeting new people. Dix asked him how long he'd been playing guitar and at once memories of the first time he ever did flooded into his head.
"Five years," He told her, "Non-stop since the time I got my guitar when I first came here. My Dad gave it me, it used to be his when he was my age and I've been hooked since."
He paused, looking at her as she smoothed out her hair, creating loose curls. A smile tweaked once again at the sides of his lips.
"You don't play do you?"

Dix laughed lightly, "Not really. I know someone who does though, he tried to teach me; and it didn't go so smooth. I really want to learn how to play, but I don't have the patience." She answered honestly. Dix really did want to learn to play an instrument, whether it is a piano or a guitar. She just wanted to be useful and be able to do something on her own.
So," Dixie said, "what are you doing out here? Besides the obvious?" She tilted her head and looked at him. Jake Hurstner, why did that name sound so familiar? It was going to bug her to no end if she didn't find out soon. Dixie bit her lip in wonder and shook her head, as if to tell herself to snap out of it.

"I know the feeling," Jake nodded as Dixie told him that she had no patience. It was entirely true in his case. He was a quick learner in most cases and took up things easily but he could tend to be put off if he couldn't pick things up just like that. It would explain his dislike for divianation -, "But I taught myself. It's easier and you don't end up offending any of your teachers, as I did when my Dad tried to teach me some chords. Ended up being better than him and he hates that."
Jake grinned.
"And as for my being out here, I've been put in for an afternoon of solitude. Every Ravenclaw's gone off studying. Oh, that's my house by the way, Ravenclaw. You're a Slytherin aren't you? I've seen you with Kori Williams before."

"So, wait, you taught yourself how to play?" She asked him with a raised eyebrow. Dix then heard him say something about Kori and her eyes got wide, "You're Jake! Ah! Now, I know why your name was familiar. Yeah, I'm in Slytherin," Dixie replied with a smile that sparkled, she nudged him, "Better watch out, I'm bad news." She laughed and pulled her sunglasses on over her eyes again.
"Tell me, why aren't you studying? Isn't that like, a Ravenclaw's entire day? Study study study?" Dixie looked to him, and smiled again. She was being entirely nice, and that was rare for Dix but, she thought no harm in making a friend or two outside of Slyth. It turned out not many Slytherin's liked her anyway.

Jake raised his eyebrows at Dixie as she shouted. It seemed to be the mention of Kori Williams that had triggered it. Perhaps Kori had talked about Jake before to Dix. Jake didn't really know what to think but, instinct kicking in, he thought it couldn't be good if it was a Slytherin talking.
"Why? Has Kori mentioned me?" He ventured warily, hoping that it was something less negative than he was imagning.
Jake frowned slightly as Dixie suggested that a Ravenclaw's day was all 'study, study, study'. Jake was living proof that it most definitley wasn't.
"I prefer to think there's more to life that studying," Jake said cooly, trying not to sounds too short as he assumed that Dixie was being nice for a Slytherin.

Dix smiled and lowered her head, "Jake, Kori talks about everyone she meets. At the end of the day she comes and tells me who she met and what she thought of them. The night she started to talk about you, I was in a particularly rotten mood and told her to shut up and leave me alone I don't want to hear anymore stories." She raised her head and looked at him.
"Kori's not a good person." She murmered more to herself than to him. When he replied to her study study study remark, he seemed a bit annoyed and Dix smiled, "Now, don't hold back. Snap at me if ya want, won't do any harm." She actually thought it was good of him to try not to sound to agitated, "And it's good you don't want to study all the time. All work and no play makes people dull. And dull, is no fun."

Jake didn't really know how to respond as Dixie told him that Kori passed comment on everyone she met at then end of the day. And as if to make matters worse and his response more awkward Jake, though Dixie seemed to be speaking to herself as her words were so quiet, caught what she said next. Kori's not a good person. Jake stared at Dixie as she went on talking, now as bright as ever, as if she'd commented on the weather or something simular rather than the reality, which was defiantly less light-hearted. It took Jake a while to respond.
"That's a good philosophy," He said at last, deciding that he'd step over he previous comments and focus on the one's that didn't make the situation unpleasantly awkward, "And I'm not going to snap at you. It takes a lot to make me snap. I usually have an annoyingly long tether."

Dix smiled again, "I have a philosophy? I have a philosophy." She said, repeating it. Letting the words roll off her tongue. She laughed lightly at herself, "I never thought I could say those words. Do you have a philosophy?" Dixie asked, tilting her head. She bit her llp, having a strange urge for candy. She searched through her shoulderbag and pulled out a muggle candy. Jolly Ranchers. She held the bag out to Jake, "Want some? Not poisoned. I promise." She offered him. Dix didn't mind muggle things, but muggles themselves...sometimes made Dix a little uneasy.
"Sometimes it does a person good to snap though. That way you don't have all this pent up anger. Just- quick to ignite and quick to blow out." Dixie unwrapped the yellow Jolly Rancher and popped it in her mouth with a smile.

Jake chuckled as Dixie held out a bag of candy, assuring him that they weren't poisoned. He glanced at the bag, Jolly Ranchers. He hadn't heard of them, but Jake was the sort of person that would eat anything - in huge quantites - and he was never one to turn down food. He took his guitar from around his neck, propped it up against the bench and reached into the bag, pulling out a sweet.
"Thanks," He said, unwrapping the sweet and putting it in his mouth. It was pleasant enough and he sucked it contentedly, putting it in one side of his mouth so he could talk, "My philosophy? I don't really know. It seems like a bit of a deep thing to have for me. It'd be a good project to have though. Yeah, okay, my task for this week is to find a philosophy."
He grinned as Dixie talked about pent up anger. It occured to him that it was a very Slytherin-ish comment.
"I try and make sure I haven't got much to snap about," He said in a world-wise sort of way, "If you don't let things get to you then you don't have a reason, do you?" "

"I guess it depends who you are. Few people I know, snap all the time because of their home life. Others don't snap at all. I don't know. I mean, doesn't everyone have an angry emotion? Or is their people in this world that have every other emotion, plus one, except anger?" Dixie thought aloud. She sucked on the lemon jolly rancher, and shrugged. It was too deep a thought for Dix to even think about thinking.
"And philosophies. Easy enough to find I suppose. I mean, it could be something like, 'don't swim in open water with sharks.' Wait. Yeah, that would work. I actually think that's Mack's. Good luck with that philosophy search though. Maybe there are books on them." Dixie stated with a smile. She ran her fingers through her hair again before slipping off her cloak and setting it on her shoulderbag. She then pulled out a sketchpad and flipped through the pages. Most of them were used already, Mack liked to use her things. So they were Mack's drawings. Dix liked to do word art, not really draw. Slowly she began making a name and designing it.

Jake listened to Dixie with a thoghtful expression on his face, all the time sucking at the Jolly Rancher, switching it from one side of his mouth to the other. What was his 'angry emotion'? He didn't really know. He knew for a fact that he wasn't one to snap. He had a knack for tip-toeing around senstitive subjects so that he didn't need to. His natural reaction to things that got him riled up was to ignore them and change the subject. It took a lot to make Jake really mad. And when he did, he usualls threw things. Perhaps he was a case of ultimate built-up anger that hadn't showed itself even yet. It was kind of worrying.....Jake shook his head and went back to listening to Dixie. In the time that he had been thinking she had taken out a notepad and was now sketching on it intently.
"Mack?" Jake asked curiously. He hadn't heard the name before so he was pretty sure it belonged to a person who wasn't a fifth year.

"Mack? Oh, my sister. Mackenzie. She's in her third year. Little blonde thing. Keeps to herself, we argue a lot. She always ends up throwing me against a wall. Talk about pent up anger." Dix answered, not taking her eyes off the note pad. She shifted her pencil so she could shade the 'J.' Word Art. Luckily it was something Dixie could do. She added flames to the J and shaded those too.
"Do you have any siblings?" She asked, looking up at him. The Jolly Rancher had totally melted, but that sour lemon taste still remained in her mouth. Dix tilted her head at the art, and erased a part of the next letter. She added in a weird looking design then continued to finish it.

Jake chuckled at Dixie's descripton of her sister as a 'Little blonde thing'. It was the sort of sentance that he himself used to describe his own.
"Two," Jake replied, watching her hand as it skated across the paper, shading in and erasing her drawing, which was Word Art, "Both sisters. Neither of them come to Hogwarts, Alex left last year and Imo's coming next September."
He tilted his head to try and read what Dixie had drawn.
"What does it say?"

Dixie looked up, "Cool. So you're the middle child?" She asked him after he told her about his sisters. Dix looked back down at the drawing, and continued. Shading and smudging the letters and lines together. Outlines were never good. Contour or fine. Never good, and that was one thing Dix knew.
"Ah, ah, ah! You'll see. Not until it's done though." She told him, holding the sketchpad closer to her so he couldn't see what she was drawing.
