He wasn't looking forward to the pile of homework he still had to do as he made his way back to the Gryffindor common room after class that day. As usual, he avoided it all until the last possible night, and now it loomed over him until it was almost as intimidating as Snape. That thought made him cringe slightly. A sixth year and his potions professor still had that effect on him.
The comon room was its usual self, crowds of people sat around the fire, some with books open, others playing games of wizard chess--those were the ones he looked at longingly. If only he could play chess instead of having work to do. Chess was right up there with quidditch, he thought.
He had to force his attention back to his books as he found and empty table a ways off from the fire. He grudgingly made his way over, thinking about how he had avoided coming back to the common room long enough so he lost his favorite chair by the fire-the chair that he always say it when Hermione and Harry were with him. As he set his books on the table, the thought of his friends distracted him again and he wondered where they might be. It was strange not to see them for this long. He figured that Hermione was off in the library and Harry was at the Pitch.
Sitting down he couldn't help but think how he wished Hermione would come back and join him. She always knew the answers to his homework.

Hermione walked up the stairs to towards the Gryffindor common room, she was with another Gryffindor girl, a seventh year, and they were laughing and talking. “Oh really? You think Snape would make a good mask for the Halloween ball?” Hermione asked the girl. “Of course,” was her answer, “can you think of anything scarier than Professor Snape?” they both laughed. “Oh but really, what are you going as?” Hermione asked her, “You’ll see, it will be the best costume there,” the girl said confidently as they walked through the porthole into the common room.
“What are you going as Hermione?” the girl asked. She hesitated on her answer, to tell the truth Hermione had no idea, and furthermore she had no date for the upcoming event. “Umm I haven’t quite decided yet, torn between costumes.” The girl smiled, “Well you better hurry up before they are all gone and you end up with something stupid like a horse,” she laughed. Hermione glanced over the common room; it was full, as it usually was at this time. People were playing chess and sitting by the fire doing homework, Hermione had finished all her homework long ago. As she looked her eyes passed over Ron, sitting at a table in a corner by himself. “Hey isn’t that your friend over there?” the seventh year she was with pointed out just as she had spotted Ron.
Hermione looked at her, “Yes, that’s Ron.” The girl grinned, “Well I am sure you want to go talk to him, besides I got some work to do. See you later,” she said and disappeared up the stairs. Hermione smiled at the back of Ron’s head before walking up to him. “Hey Ron!” she said as she flopped into the chair next to him. “How was your summer?” Hermione had hardly seen Ron since school started back, she had been very busy with her schoolwork.

Ron was sloutched over in his char, his chin resting rather uncomfortable on his palm as he stared at his blank parchment, mumbling about how impossible potions homework was. He didn't even know where to start with out Hermione's direction and was almost to the point where he was ready to take out his book--and that was not a happy thought.
He didn't even notice that Hermione was approching until he heard the chair beside him slide out, causing him to jump slightly, pulling him from his daze.
"Hermione, just the girl I wanted to see"
He tried to make his voice sound as much like he wasn't going to ask her for answers as possible. When she knew all he wanted was answers for homework, he tended to get nothing more than a lecture on how important it was to know all of this stuff, and he definatly didn't want that.
"Summer? Not like lasts few, thats for sure. Its bloody silent with out Fred and George around, and then not seeing you or Harry. We did go visit Charlie though, the new dragons they found are bloody brilliant. The eggs are bigger than Me and Charlie together!"

Hermione smiled at Ron, “Why’s that?” she asked him, referring to his comment on her being just the girl he wanted to see. “Yeah I know what you mean Ron. It was so strange being at home with mum and dad and not seeing you guys.” She looked at Ron with a gleam in her eye as he talked about the new dragon Charlie had found, “That’s amazing! I am sure they will have a few knew books on it in no time at all.” She rested back more comfortably in the chair, “How are Fred and George? Making more mischief like always? I heard their shop is doing really well.”
“My summer was awfully boring without you, but it did prove useful. I managed to read through all my books for this year. There are some really interesting ones. Did you get to read any of them?” she asked Ron, though she already knew the answer, but hoped for a change for a different one.

He avoided nswering the first question. If he let her know how that he wanted her for the answers she could give him he would have a lecture and no answers. The question about this brothers seemed much safer. "I don't talk to them much, they seem pretty busy. Their shops doing wicked though. They send an Owl with new stuff all the time. They sent me this stuff a few weeks ago that makes you burp bubbles tuat spark when they pop. Bloody brilliant. Mum wasn't too happy though."
When she started to talk about reading all her books this summer and his face wrinkled slightly. Of course he expected it from Hermione, but it still didn't seem like a good way to spend a summer to him.
"Yeah...I read them" he replied sarcasticly. In fact he still hadn't even looked at most of his books--his mum had just bought them the day before the train left.

Hermione realised that Ron was avoiding her question, which meant one of a few things, firstly: he was up to something that he didn’t want her to know about, but wanted her help in; two: he wanted her help but knew she would not approve of it or three: he needed help with his homework. “Really? That’s a shame,” she said when Ron told her he hadn’t spoken to his brothers much. “At least they send you stuff,” she said with a smile. “I’d imagine not. Your mum never wanted them opening that shop in the first place.” They were all well aware of how Molly Weasley felt about her boys’ eccentric behaviours and this shop didn’t make it better.
“Good, so you are ahead of the game then? Good thing too, this year is very important,” she said in a matching sarcastic tone. She hoped Ron realised that their futures were riding on this year and the next and he and Harry had both be ready for it. “You have to take your work seriously Ron. This year won’t be like last, we are in NEWT classes now and that means business.”

He was only half listening as she started talking about how important it was and NEWTs. That wasn't his concern at the moment. Well, the future part at least, he was thinking about the homework he didn't know how to do.
"You know Hermione, speaking about classes and all, have you done your potions yet?"
He had asked her about homework enough to know it must be approched with caution.

Hermione was looking over his books, “Why yes of course. Haven’t you?” she asked looking up at him. Hermione knew what was coming next, but she did not let on. Hermione was never behind in her work, never, and she had no intentions of changing that tread, especially not now with NEWTs snapping at their heels. “Have you seen Harry this evening?” she asked him, looking back at the book.

Of course she had. He knew he didn't even need to ask, but for some reason he always did. Then, she always said "Haven't you" when she knew full well that the only thought he had put into homework since class was trying to figure out how to get her to help him.
"Harry?" Maybe it was her way of trying to let him know she didn't plan on helping him this time. "No...actually, I haven't. Odd really...I always see him after class"

“Hmm hmm Harry,” she said and looked over at Ron. Hermione furrowed her eyebrows, “That’s strange I haven’t seen him either and I usually do after class. Actually I haven’t seen Harry all day since class this morning.” Hermione felt a little strange, it wasn’t like Harry to just go off without Ron at least, even if he didn’t take her along.
She began looking through the pages of the book on the table reading, “Wonder where he is?” she said.

He hadn't been concerned wit Harry disappearance before, but now that she had brought it up, he was starting to wonder. Most of the time he and Harry were together, but it wasn’t like they did everything together. That must have been when it didn’t strike him as odd sooner, but now he realized that he didn’t even know where Harry was, and that was the odd part. Even when Harry had to go someplace else, he always told him where.
“Maybe Snape gave him detention or something”
