Ivy dragged herself up the stairs to her dormitory. The same dormitory still, but now she was in 3rd year.
She smiled. Her bed looked very inviting. She took out her pyjamas and arranged a photo of her dad on the bedside table.
The house-elves had unpacked all her stuff. She took out the book she was reading (Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman) and, as she was the only one in the room, jumped onto her luxurious bed, gazing out at the dark night sky.
The feast had finished late and she was quite tired now. But there was no point trying to sleep before everyone else came up, she was a light sleeper due to needing to be at her father's beck and call any time of the day or night and would wake up as soon as anyone entered the room. Ivy settled back into the bedcovers with her book.
The door opened and Ivy looked up to see who it was.

Kiyla decended slowly up the stair to her dormitory. The feast had been tiring and she couldn't wait to get into her bed to sleep and hopefully make some friends. She opened the door and walked in with a smile. She glanced around the room to see that Ivy was already there. She said "Hi." to Ivy then walked over to her bed to see that the house elves had unpcked for her. She grabbed her p.j's and changed quickly then sat down on Ivy's bed. "What are you up to?" She asked.

Ivy smiled as she saw Kiyla walk into the room. She returned her attention to her book until Kiyla came and sat down on her bed. "What are you up to?" Kiyla asked. "I'm reading a new book I bought in Muggle London," replied Ivy, indicating the book. "It's great." She reached for her bookmark, which had moving pictures of her favourite Quidditch Team, the Tornados, on it, inserted it into the book and placed the novel on her table. "So then," she asked brightly, "what you do over the summer?"

"Oh nothing really. Just sat around the house." Kiyla quickly said hoping Ivy didn't notice how quickly she shrugged of that question. "What about you?"

Ivy blanched as Kiyla asked her a difficult question. "What about you?" What could she say to that? She'd watched her father get more and more unhappy. She'd left unsaid what should have been said between them. She'd watched his condition worsen. Within a second her shield was down and she was crying. She'd kept it all bottled up for too long. She was grateful she'd only done it infront of her best friend, at least. What could she say to her now?

"What's wrong? What happened?" Kiyla said to the crying Ivy while putting her ill feelings about her summer aside and replacing them with worry for Ivy. She quickly put her arms around Ivy hugging her and trying to comfort her. Did someone die? Is she okay? Did somethign happen to her whie she was gone? Kiyla thought frantically. She never say Ivy cry before and it scared her. She could feel tears coming to her eyes but she blinked them back.

Ivy cryed for some time before she realised that Kiyla was hugging her. It felt a bit like she was back in her mum's arms. She shrugged the thought off, and looked up to meet Kiyla's worried chocolate brown eyes. "Sorry," she mumbled, looking down again. "I'm sorry," she said. "I couldn't help it." She swung her legs round so she was sitting side by side with Kiyla. "I just had a bit of a difficult summer, that's all. I just..." She trailed off, her eyes brimming with tears again. She had never cryed in front of Kiyla before, it usually happened when she was alone. "Sorry," she said again. "I'll try not to do it again. I just... it's my dad is worse and... my mum isn't speaking to me and..." How could she explain it to Kiyla? She had told Kiyla some of her history but she didn't think Kiyla could ever fully understand... She knew Kiyla didn't live with her natural parents but still... at least they were a happy family, Ivy thought. What should she say to Kiyla? Maybe she should tell her everything? Kiyla had always been a good friend. "I'm sorry," she repeated herself. Why couldn't she think of anything else to say? "I'm quite tired, I suppose." She wished she could tell Kiyla everything. But everyone keeps secrets from one another, Ivy was not fool enough to not know that.

"You have nothing to be sorry about." Kiyla said her eyes full of worry and concern. "What happened? You can tell me. You know I'll understand." Kiyla said. She had never really been with her biological parents and sometimes she wished that she could talk to them and ask them why they gave her up but now all Kiyla was worried about was Ivy. She hated seeing her cry, although she had never seen her cry before. Sometimes Kiyla would see Ivy and she would be looking like she was crying but Kiyla never questioned her before. But now seeing Ivy like this made her feel really useless, even guilty because of the fact she can't read minds. "Is there anything I can do to help?" Kiyla said looking into Ivy's teary eyes.

"You don't have to be sorry," Kiyla told Ivy. Ivy tried to smile. Maybe she didn't have anything to be sorry about to Kiyla but to her father... she had every reason in the world to be sorry to her father. Kiyla was asking if there was anything she could do to help. "You're helping just by being here," said Ivy. "You're helping by being a good friend." Could she say any more? She resolved that she would tell Kiyla more, another time. When she knew herself more than she did at present. Ivy smiled again at Kiyla, a rather teary, sad smile, but also a hopeful one. 'I will sort this out,' Ivy vowed to herself.

Kiyla just stared at Ivy as she smiled. Kiyla was not only worried but she was confused. She wanted to help more but she saw that Ivy wasn't going to tell her anything else. "You know I'm always here for you when you need me okay? Something's are impossible for you to handle all by yourself." Kiyla said with a hopeful smile. She hugged Ivy once more and aske, "Are you okay for now?"

"You know some things are impossible to handle all by yourself." If only Kiyla could know quite how true her words were. "Yeah, I'm okay now," Ivy replied to Kiyla's question. "I'm just tired. I'll be all right in the morning." She hugged Kiyla back and met her eyes. They smiled at each other uncertainly. "Night," Ivy said, as she clambered into her bed.
For a long time she lay awake, unable to get any sleep. "You know some things are impossible to handle all by yourself," she repeated to herself.

Kiyla watched uncertainly as Ivy got in her bed. Kiyla went over to her bed and climbed in thinking about what just happened. After about 15 minutes of laying on her back she quietly climbed out of bed and went through her drawers to find a picture of her mom and dad smiling happily at the camera with you in their arms. A tear excaped her eyes and she quickly whiped it away as she put the picture back in it's drawer. She paused before going back in her bed thinking about what she ever did to let them leave her like that. She had to find out where they were soon. With those thoughts Kiyla climbed back in the bed and finally fell asleep.
