Sketching was Phoebe's favorite passtime. She drew in class while she was bored...anytime she wanted to. She bit her lip as she looked up at the clock in the common room. It was just after dinner so the common room was filled with many people. The bustle made her smile even though she didn't really know many of them.
She looked down at her drawing and frowned. She was used to drawing anime characters and this time she was trying something different. She was drawing the girl who was sitting across from her. She didn't know her...and she looked like a first year.
'Doesn't even notice...stupid first year,' Phoebe said with a small smirk.

Mary came up the steps from the dorms with a small smile on her face. She finally felt at peace for the first time in a long while. It was like her inner struggle was finally over though she didn’t think she had anything resolved… Shrugging it off Mary rose into the common room and looked around. Everywhere she looked someone was doing something; reading, doing homework, chatting. Mary seemed to only know one person in there though and she only knew her vaguely.
She walked up behind Phoebe “Doesn't even notice... stupid first year” she heard her mutter. Placing her chin on the back of the couch Mary looked over and saw a sketch of the girl sitting by the fire. “Or maybe she does and she’s just so vain she enjoys it. Shall I ask her?” Mary said to Phoebe with a smirk. She then hopped over the back of the couch and plopped down beside the fourth year. She snuck another glance at the picture, it was rather good. “Mind some company?” she asked thinking that she should probably make an effort not to be so cold, she knew Phoebe was not her biggest fan to say the least.

Phoebe jumped when she heard someone talking to her from behind. She watched as she saw Mary sit beside her. She groaned inwardly. She remembered she had met this girl in Diagon Alley and they hadn't made such a nice aquaintence.
"I didn't realize I said that aloud. Besides, if I wanted to ask her, I would have done it myself." Phoebe said with a smirk.
"I wouldn't mind some, but who do you have in mind?" Phoebe asked her with a raised eyebrow.

Mary simply rolled her eyes as Phoebe mentioned asking the girl herself if she really cared. “Meh your choice.” Was all Mary said in reply before Phoebe asked who Mary had in mind for company. “Well I was thinking of maybe a pair of monkeys, you know so that you would be able to have a conversation at your level as opposed to mine which would just be beyond you, but I changed my mind. Why give them the pleasure of annoying you when I have some free time on my hands and can do it myself.”
Mary moved over to the other side of the couch and rested against the arm while putting her feet up beside Phoebe. “So Phebs… how goes it?” she asked the other girl with a smirk.

Phoebe smirked at Mary's comment. Things hadn't changed one bit since the last time they talked. They still were colder than an ice cube to each other. Not that it mattered much to Phoebe.
"Oh, but where's the other monkey? I see you...but where's your partner?" Phoebe asked the girl curiously. She looked behind the girl as if looking for someone else. "Did you leave them at the zoo from which you came from?"
Phoebe shook her head as she listened to Mary's question. She turned her head to her drawing and began to finish it. It was nearly finished. If they girl didn't move Phoebe could get done with it in a few minutes or so.
"It's going," Phoebe answered without looking up from her drawing. "What about you?"

Mary laughed as Phoebe asked where the other monkey was and if Mary had left it at the zoo she came from. “Yes that’s very good dear there is you and I here. Its wonderful that you can see me and realise that your fellow monkey is missing. I'm afraid you are correct, I left him at the zoo when I came to find where you had escaped to. But don't worry I will get you your mate soon.” She said with a smirk.
Phoebe said that “it’s going” and directed the question back at Mary. She thought about it for a second and decided to go with civil conversation. “Everything is going just wonderful with me in fact. Went through a bit of a dark stage to tell the truth but its all better now for some reason. Things are just a little hectic making arrangements for this summer and all; which reminds me I need to send a letter to my father letting him know about Pyro.” Mary said distractedly at the end. She removed a piece of parchment, quill and inkbottle from her bag and began tapping the feather on the parchment contemplating how to put it.

Phoebe rolled her eyes. The games were getting rather old...plus she couldn't think of a good enough comment to say back.
"You're good, I'll give you that," Phoebe said with a little laugh.
She listened to Mary talk abotu how she was doing. Phoebe wasn't expecting the conversation to go this far. She wasn't expecting the conversation at all in the first place. Phoebe looked down at her sketch and continued to draw as she listened to the girl.
"Letter? Who's Pyro?" She inquired as she kept her eyes on her paper, looking at her "model" every now and then.

Mary gave a slight grin as Phoebe told her she was good. “Well thank you, you’re not so terrible yourself.” Mary was surprised she was complementing this girl but she had been thrown off by the complement she could think of nothing other than the truth. Fact was, Phoebe aggravated her to no end sometimes and was a lot better at witty comebacks than most she knew.
“Pyro Blackfire… well not anymore I suppose… third year Slytherin. He’s been disowned so… he’s genna be staying with me. But I have to tell my parents.” She explained while trying to find the words for her parents.
Dear Father
She wrote. Staring at the words for a moment though she took out her wand, gave it a little swish and the words disappeared.
Dear Mother
She re-started with a grimace. Dealing with her mother was much less pleasant but necessary in this case she believed. She just stared at the paper for a moment then before she remembered Phoebe was there. “So…” she said. “I would ask what’s new with you but quite frankly I don't know a thing about you so everything would be new to me. So why don't you tell me something about yourself.” Mary said not looking up; needing something to distract her from this letter she was condemned to write.

Phoebe smiled. 'Maybe I was wrong about her. She doesn't seem all that bad after all...' Phoebe thought to herself.
"Your parents will approve of him living with you guys? Well, I suppose..." Phoebe said in disbelief. She looked up at her subject once more and continued to draw her.
"Ah, yes. Our conversations seem to always be more like arguements," Phoebe said slowly. "Well, I draw. I'm from Japan. I have tons of siblings. I don't really know what to tell you. Do you want to know anything?"

Phoebe seemed surprised that Mary’s parents wouldn’t mind him living with them. She gave her a small smile before saying, “Well they meet him before and they like him. Plus Evans manor is so large its not like it would cause any problems. Even if they didn’t like him they would never have to see him; just give him a room in the south or east wing and they would never even notice his presence. My parents tend to stay in the north wing or the centre which is the family area and I stay in the west so… the only time the south and east wings tend to be inhabited is when we have company.” Mary explained glad for the distraction from her letter.
She then listened as Phoebe explained that she was from Japan and had a ton of siblings and asked if there was anything in particular Mary wanted to know. “Well are they all at Hogwarts? Or are they too young? Or too old? I always wanted a sibling you know… but it’s just my parents and I at home. When did you come from Japan? I mean you must be living in the U.K. to go here so obviously you moved at some point right? What’s it like there? Did you like it?” Mary babbled suddenly very interested in Phoebe’s life. She hadn’t heard much about it obviously just two small statements but they were both so different from her own life. She had never lived anywhere but England and Scotland at school and she was an only child.

Mary's house seemed to sound a lot like Pheobe's. She smiled to herself. "That's how our house is, but seeing as my family is pretty big, it doesn't even seem big. My older siblings and the ones closest to my age all stay in the east wing. Father and Mother and the younger children are all scattered around the west wing. We always seem to have family over so they occupy whatever room they want. I'm glad our house is big because I never have to share a room with anyone. Yet everyone somehow always finds a reason to come into my room..." Phoebe said rolling her eyes.
"Well, I'm the only one who wanted to go to Hogwarts. They all got their letters from other schools. Well, the ones that are old enough to go to school. The older ones are out of school. Trust me, if you want a sibling at ALL...believe me...all you would want is one. After Layla came out, i didn't want anymore. Heck, after Yuki came out, I didn't want anymore!" Phoebe said with a laugh.
"I moved here a while ago, but I do visit Japan as often as I can. I lived in Tokyo. I love it there! Well, that may only be because I was born there, so I'm a native. I remember I spending most of the weekdays in school. We had to clean up after outselves...imagine, cleaning your school? Japan is beautiful though. Even during a typhoon it's pretty." Phoebe said. She stopped when she realized she had been saying way too mcuh.

Staring at the paper Mary began writing as she listened to Phoebe talk about her home being large as well but so full it didn’t always seem that way. She grinned slightly feeling better about not having sibling upon remembering how annoying it is to have people in your room uninvited. It seldom happened in her home of course because only the best was expected from their staff but when her mother had something to say…
Phoebe then explained that despite her abundance of siblings she was the only one who chose to attend Hogwarts. She said it in an amusing way, naming a few and saying that was all she wanted. Mary giggled and nodded as Phoebe said all Mary should want is one.
After the girl shared a laugh Phoebe began to speak of Japan and how she visits there often. She talked about its beauty and her old school, how they had to clean it. Phoebe was actually pleasant when not slinging insults and Mary was enjoying her company more than she would have imagined. “What about the house elves? Why did you guys have to go to the cleaning? Was it a muggle school or something?” Mary asked astonished, she had only ever attended Hogwarts but she thought only muggles went to school before they were eleven, but then it made no sense that Phoebe was in Slytherin…
Phoebe smiled as she remembered her and her friends cleaning up the school. She remembered how Timothy would complain. "Well, all schools are like that in Japan I think. Magical or not, It all has to do with disipline. They don't want us to get too lazy, so we had to do the work. The only place where there were house elves were at home. Tim always hated cleaning but he eventually got used to it. Father said if he did as he was told at school that he would let him go to his first martial arts training. I remember I was little when this happened. He was like 7, but i remember. He alwayswas into his martial arts. He was the one who showed me that muggles weren't all that bad. I'm still trying to get used to the fact that muggles aren't trash. I occasionally may call one a mudblood, but I try not to. Tim would always argue with me about it. That's the only time me and Tim---oh," Phoebe said slowly as she noticed something.
She came to realization that one of her older siblings, the only one she had become close to, died. She had forgotten all about his death. Here she was talking about him like he was still living and breathing...when he wasn't. Phoebe's skecthbook hit the floor, but she didn't even hear it. Tears were welling up in her eyes and she covered her mouth as her breathing patterns began to change.
"I almost forgot. My older brother, Tim...he's dead," Phoebe said to Mary with a sad sort of smile as a tear slowly fell down her face. She knew she had just ruined the happy friendly environment.

Mary’s confusion only deepened as Phoebe said that everyone was forced to do the chores of servants in Japan. She said it had to do with discipline and to keep them from getting lazy but… shouldn’t your own ambition be enough? And if not then what does it matter? I you don't have the means to support a lazy lifestyle life will provide the drive for you and if you do have the means then it really doesn’t matter now does it?
Before Mary had the opportunity to question though Phoebe had moved on to talking about a boy named Tim who seemed to be a brother of hers. She began by speaking of how he despised the chores then how he was in martial arts and eventually how he preached tolerance for muggles. It seemed he was influencing Phoebe in that sentiment as well, for the better in Mary’s opinion.
It was quite odd how these two girls were managing such companionable discourse but Mary was enjoying it. Quite suddenly though Phoebe seemed to be crying as she mentioned having forgotten the passing of her brother, Tim. “Oh, Phoebe. I'm so sorry. Are you ok? Was it recent? Do you need to talk? Do you need a tissue? Anything I can do?” Mary rambled not knowing quite what to do, she wasn’t used to have people cry around her. Slytherins were usually too proud to cry in front of others, anger was a much more common emotion. Due to this, and the fact that she more often than not refused to be comforted, she really didn’t know how to comfort someone in need. Regardless she got up and fetched a box of tissues before sitting beside Phoebe once more and handing her the box.
