It was Saturday at Hogwarts; the snow had started falling days ago and everywhere was covered in a blanket of soft white. There was a Hogsmeade weekend planned for that very day; there would be one or two more before school finished for the Christmas holidays; and everyone was a buzz about it. The halls of the school were decorated in ornate decorations and the ghosts were going around singing carols; even Peeves had gotten into the cheer with a few yuletide pranks. There was a chill in the corridors but that was expected at that time of year and all the teachers seemed a little more pleasant; all but Snape of course who seemed to have gotten sourer with the cold.
Things were really picking up in the dorms; students were formulating Christmas plans and gift exchanges with each other; and it was one of these very planning sessions that Sethia Wagner walked in on as she came down from her dorm room into the Hufflepuff common room. The house elves had laid out cookies in the shapes of Santa Clauses and Snowmen for them and the room was bright and warm from the fire. She took a cookie; a snowman and began to nibble on his hat. She stood in a corner off from everyone listening to a group of younger students planning for the Holidays. “I’m spending a week in the Caribbean,” once girl said proudly; “That’s awesome,” came from one of her counterparts. “I’m going to my gran’s for a big Christmas celebration, the whole family, we do it every year,” said a boy.
Listening, Sethia began to feel very sad. She wasn’t going home for Christmas, to a big family and friends. Her only family now was her aunt and she was spending Christmas away this year on a big business deal for the farm, so Sethia was going to be remaining at school. There had been another suggestion, from Payton, a boy a year older than she was. He had invited her to spend Christmas with his family, he had even written his father and he said yes, but so far her aunt was tentative about letting her go. Sethia wanted to go; to experience what is was like in a big city with a big family at Christmas.
She finished off her cookie and left the common room, the coaches to Hogsmeade had started arriving and she had better get downstairs; there was always a mad rush for these trips. She walked to the corridor outside the Great Hall; her coat and scarf were hanging there by the door. She put them on and pulled out the gloves she had put in the coat’s pocket. She had dressed warmly, long jeans, a white shirt and a grey sweater over it; and now her coat and Hufflepuff scarf. Someone opened the door and a hug gust of cold air swept through the castle causing Sethia’s blonde hair the whip all over the place as she tried to shield her face from the snow that was coming in on it. When the wind died down she looked outside, everything looked so peaceful and serene all covered in white. She was to meet two of her friends Alexa Lee and Celina Bluewick, they had decided to meet and catch the same coach together. Sethia peeked her head out the door and she rubbed her hands together as looked to see if the others were out there. She didn’t see them, and pulled her head back inside, she would just wait there.
