Bee looked around the station, trying to see her father in the crowd. She had hoped that he wouldn't be there, that he would just let her go home with anyone at the station. Anything would be better than him. Bee looked around once more when she saw him. He was standing by one of the pillars, looking extreamly angrey that he had to wait for his daughter. Bee looked down at the ground, regaining all the courage she had, and then walked over to her father with a would be happy smile on her face. It was a forced smile and she wasn't sure how long she would be able to smile in front of her father.
"Hi." Bee said. She stood there, waiting for a hug perhaps that she never got from her father. Never since her mother died anyway. Bee waited akwardly, until her father looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.
"It's about time you got here." He said in a rather nasty voice as if Bee was some scum under his shoe. "I have lots of chores for you to do. Since Perry is gone, no one is there to clean the house." This was Mr. Vreeland's way of welcoming his daughter back. Bee fought back tears and then followed him to the car.
At their house, Bee was doing chores as in: cleaning the fireplace, making meals, mowing the lawn, washing the car, laundry, and many other things. She started when she heard the doorbell ring. Bee walked to it, smoothing her hair out the best she could and opened the door. It was Jack.

Jack was running as far as he could. He just wanted to get away from his father for a week or two. He was getting out of breath, it seemed as if he had been running a mile. Finally, he stopped, breathing in sharp gasps. He clutched his chest and he felt like sitting, but he knew his father would be looking for him once he knew that Jack was missing. He looked up and down the streets and saw a bright blue house on the corner. His heart leapt; that could be Bee's house! He started running again, trying to remember everything Bee had told him. He remembered her saying: "I had to paint what I could reach of my house bright blue," and that explained why the house Jack was looking at now appeared to be half white and half blue. He ran faster until he reached the door. Panting, he waited until he had caught his breath; and then rang the doorbell. To his great relief, Bee opened the door.
"Can I come in?" Jack asked, trying to sound as if he had just stopped by and wasn't running away from his dreadful father.

Bee felt her face go red. She was a dirty mess: her hair brown instead of blonde from cleaning the fireplace, and her hands were almost black. She wished she was somewhere else right now, instead of standing in front of Jack. Anywhere but here, she thought desperatly, her green eyes staring around wildly. She nodded and stepped back from the door to let Jack in. She almost forgot about everything, her eyes on Jack and Jack only. She didn't know why, but she felt as if someone was watching her. She turned around and saw her father standing in the doorway behind her. Bee felt as if she might faint. This was going too far!

Jack stepped inside, looking at Bee's house. It looked clean enough, but when he looked at Bee, he couldn't help feel a pain of pity in his heart. She was a mess, she didn't look like the young Gryffindor Jack had known. She looked like a house elf, a slave. Jack noticed that Bee was looking at him with curiousity, but he didn't give her an explaination of his actions. He was about to say something nice, cheerful, when Bee turned around and saw someone in the doorway to a different room. Jack looked too and saw a man in his mid-thirties standing there. Jack frowned. He wasn't sure what to do. He didn't like the expression Bee was wearing either. She looked as if her death was coming. Jack had never seen Bee so scared. She was usually the brave one, the risk taker, the cheerful blonde girl that Jack enjoyed being around. Now it Bee was a frightened little girl with brown murky hair and afraid to do anything. Jack didn't like being here anymore than at his own house. He had no idea that Bee had this much trouble with her parents.

Bee tried hard not to cry. She knew what was coming next.
"Bridget! I didn't know we were having guests!" Her father, Scott, roared. "You don't deserve to have any company. All I need is your company. He can't stay!" He said, pointing at Jack with a menacing finger. "He isn't one of your kind is he?" He added nastily.
Bee looked at Scott, and then at Jack. "Dad," Bee started in a wavering voice. "this is Jack Rendel. He's my friend from-from school." Bee looked at her dad, fear evident in her eyes and then watched as her dad came towards her.
"You little damn devil!" Scott screamed with hatred at his daughter. He was right over Bee know and he raised a fist a slapped her so hard, Bee backed into the wall, wimpering in pain. "I should have known you would betray me one of these days!" With that, Scott lumbered out of the room, muttering words that were very rude. Bee was covering the spot where her father had hit her. Her eyes were all watery and she couldn't stand to look at Jack. Instead, she turned her face so he could see where she had been struck.
"Is it red?" Bee asked in a pained whisper.

Jack watched the whole fiasco with confusion. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do to stop this madness, so he just stood there, helpless. He felt awful when Bee got smacked; he had done nothing in his power to prevent it. When she asked if it was red, it pained Jack even more to tell her: "Yes, it is. I can see his handprint on your face." It was true. Bee's face was marked by her father's handprint.
"I'm so sorry, Bee. I didn't know...." Jack trailed off. He wasn't sure what to say. There was really nothing else to say, since his eyes was telling Bee the rest. He was concerned about her and her future life, and what had her dad meant about 'my company?' It sounded strange to Jack, but he knew Bee was in no state to answer his questions. He stood there, watching her, his heart filling with grief for his little mudblood friend.

Oh great, Bee thought as Jack told her what her face looked like. She ran to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. A very stressed face appeared in the glass, with green eyes that looked a bit dull. Her blonde hair that was now brown didn't match her at all. And on her left check was a red handprint showing where Bee had been struck. She cried out and sat down on the floor, hugging herself and rocking back and forth. Tears escaped her closed eyes and slid down her cheecks.
"I'm sorry you have to see me-me like this," Bee sniffled. She breathed in a huge breath, trying to calm herself down. She stood up and looked at Jack, wiping her eyes.
"So, are you here to stay or what?" She asked in a business like tone. "I need to know so I can make your room for you."

Jack watched as Bee ran from the room. He followed her slowly, not wanting to make her more upset. He couldn't bare to look at her face, it made his heart feel as if it was going to explode. He caught up to her in the bathroom and found her on the floor, sobbing. He didn't know what to do; he stood akwardly at the door, wringing his hands. Finally, she stopped and stood up. Jack was relieved that she had pulled herself together, he hated seeing Bee like this. This was worse than being back home, and Jack felt like running away from this house too. But he felt as if Bee needed him. He stayed and shuffled his feet on the floor. He looked at her when she asked if he was staying.
"I will, if you want me to," Jack replied. "I could leave too, if, you know.....you don't want me here or something."

Bee smiled at Jack. "Please stay! I don't want to be left here, with just my brother who is always on the stupid computer and Scott!" Bee cried. "Thanks goodness you're here Jack, or I would be dying a painful death!" She looked around, making sure her dad wasn't anywhere nearby and then ran towards the stairs.
"Follow me!" She called behind her as she raced up the stairs four at a time. She stopped at the top and looked around. They only had three bedrooms. Jack would have to sleep with someone and it wouldn't be Bee. She decided Jack could sleep in Perry's room, since he was a boy and he wasn't cruel like Scott. Bee walked to her twin brother's bedroom and opened the door. Perry was sitting on the computer as usual, typing so fast you could barely see his fingers. Bee cleared her throat to let him know they were there.
"Hi Perry! I have a vistor here and I was wondering if he could share your room? We only have three and since you're his age and stuff, I think this room would be more fiting for him." Bee looked around the neat room. Her brother was a neat freak. "Oh, and this is Jack by the way. He's from school." She smiled at Perry and then at Jack. "Jack this is Perry."
Perry looked up from the computer and his fingers stopped darting around the keyboard. "Hi Jack." He said dully; probably angry from being interrupted. "You can sleep on the floor then?" Perry said before turning back to the computer. Bee sighed and left the room.
"Sorry about that. My family is a bit on the weird side." Bee said as she walked down the hallway to her room. She opened her closet and took out some bed sheets. "Looks like you are going to be sleeping on the floor. I'll try to make it as comfortable as possible." Bee said while bustling around to get more blankets.
