Kimberly sat alone in the Hufflepuff common room. In front of her lay her potions books and three parchments that had been torn up and flung to the ground in anger. Blankly she stared at her next roll of parchment, her homework was due soon but she couldn't even bring herself to write her name let alone write the reasons why she needed to learn how to make something swell.
Over and over again she replayed that night's events. How they were at the dinner party when several aurors rushed in and told them they were needed at the Ministry of Magic immediately. Once there they had waited in a cold waiting room for a long time before Cornelius Fudge came to speak with them. After that Kim had become numb. Over and over she thought about the last time she'd seen her big brother alive. She'd left the house angry at him because she couldn't go with him and Hermione, she hadn't even said goodbye. "STUPID KIM!" she said as she slapped herself hard across the face. Why couldn't she have done her normal which was to hug him like crazy until he had to push her off him. "Stupid stupid stupid!" she said again and again as she dug her fingernails into her forearm until there were bright red bruises.
In this manner Kim passed an unknown amount of time, half the time she was yelling at herself, the other half she simply sat and stared blankly into the fireplace. It was in this state that Kim sat, unknown to the fact that someone now was standing next to her looking at her.

Valerie entered the common room after yet another hard day of classes. Of course all days of classes were hard for Valerie, but especially when she had potions and transfiguration on the same day. Entering the common room she smiled as she saw it was nearly empty, there was nothing more relaxing to her than reading a nice magazine in front of the fireplace when there was no one else around to bother her or talk to her.
Walking over towards the fireplace she spotted a little girl in a chair off to the side. Paying no attention to her she walked up to one of her favorite couches, a large yellow one right in front of the fireplace. Before she could sit down she heard someone say "stupid" and then she heard a loud noise. Turning her head she only saw the little girl, shrugging she sat down and ignored it. Before she could even open her bag she heard it again. Quickly turning her head she saw this time the little girl hitting herself. 'Ooooh' immediately thought Valerie as she recognize who it was.
Quickly getting up she walked over to her chair and watched her for a second as she scratched her arms with her fingernails leaving some rather nasty looking bruises. "Umm" Valerie said to get her attention, "don't do that.. it won't help.." she said patting Kim on the shoulder.

Kim was startled out of her trance state by someone addressing her. Looking up she saw it to be Valerie, one of Brian's friends. "hmm" Kim muttered as she was unable to say much as she turned back to look back blankly into the fireplace. She really didn't want to see or talk to anyone right now, especially one of her brother's friends. "How come you didn't go on the trip" Kim asked as she rolled down her sleeves and tried to hide the marks on her arms. "I thought everyone wanted to go, it was supposed to be the best thing ever" she said with an extremely sarcastic tone.

Valerie shook her head at Kim. "Sorry, I don't like the snow, I'd rather stay here where it's a little warmer than go somewhere covered with snow." As she stood there Valerie pulled up a chair and sat next to Kim. "Hey! You see the new issue of Which Broomstick!? I just got it , it's pretty cool, they've got the new handles reviewed in this issue!" Valerie then dug into her bag and pulled out the magazine and opened it up to the Broom handle reviews, scooted her chair next to Kim and held out the magazine for both to look at. Of course handles weren't very interesting, but Valerie had to do something to get Kim's mind a little back to the old Kim. She'd suffered a lot but she needed someone right now to be there for her, and with the school on Spring Break she was the only other Hufflepuff around, it was her responsibility. Also as team captain she had to look out for Kim.

Kim showed very little interest when Valerie opened her magazine. "Stupid brooms" Kim muttered to herself as she half looked at the page simply trying to get Valerie to go away. Kim then got up and grabbed her bag. "I'm going for a walk" she said as she shoved the chair hard against the wall so that is banged and rattled the paintings upon the wall. Then turning from Valerie Kim headed to the exit of the common room. She really didn't know where she was going to go, she just couldn't stand just sitting around doing nothing in the common room anymore.

Valerie watched Kim get up and leave. Something about a walk she said as she took her bag. Valerie quickly put her magazine away and followed Kim out the door. "I'll go with you, I'm hungry, want some lunch?" she called out to Kim as her longer legs quickly caught up the littler girl. "Where do you want to go?" Valerie asked as she slung her bag over her shoulder.
