Main Challenge 3

Ready for the next Main Challenge!!!

So, since everyone on this site obviously has some interest in Harry Potter and hopefully some interest in writing, I combined the two areas for this next challenge. This challenge will require good group work to win. Here is how it works.

1. Each house must submit a poem to me that will be judged by an impartial judge.

2. The poem must be a summary of any of Harry's years at Hogwarts. Your group must simply pick any year 1-6 and summarize the events of that year in Harry's life. The poem should rhyme.

3. There is no limit to how long or short the poem should be.

4. You have one week to finish the poem. I will accept only one entry per house, so please be sure that when you send me a poem, it is what you want for your finished product. Thus, it is important to discuss it with your house so that you dont make others mad for submitting without them knowing. However, in the case that the deadline is approaching, you may have to submit without getting to talk to everyone in your house.

5. The house with the winning poem will win 500 house points and the exemption. 2nd place wins 300 points. 3rd place wins 200 points. 4th place wins 100 points.

6. Remeber, only ONE poem per house. Everyone does not submit their own individual poem. The poem should cover ONE year/book, from beginning to end in summary.

No, I'm sorry Dalit- I'm afraid I would be giving away too many points if I gave them for my spelling and grammar errors! Only errors that have a pertinent affect on the game will earn points when found by players.

On to the results for this challenge!
Unfortunately, Gryffindor did not submit a poem, so that eliminates them from being able to win.

All of the poem were amazing! The judge loved reading them, and I was happy that they even gave a few remarks about each poem. However, there needed to be one that stood above, and the judge had a hard time chosing which one.

Let me first start by exlpaining that the judge was unable to decide between a second and third place. Thus, we will take the 100 points that fourth place should have recieved and tack them onto 3rd place's points, making both 2nd and 3rd place win 300 points and 1st place will still win 500 points and the exemption. Gryffindor will walk away from this challenge with nothing since they didn't participate (sorry Gryfs... fair is fair).

So, here are the good comments that were made about the poems (in order of their submission)

Ravenclaw- Had very logical flow and read easily
Hufflepuff- Lovely, unique rhyme pattern, creative word usage
Slytherin- Great use of symbolism paired with fact

Ok, well this is the Ravenclaw Poem. I hope everyone likes it.

Year the Poem discusses: Harry’s third year

Third Year

The Hogwarts gates were closed once more
As summer hit the Castle Door
So, back to the Muggle World Harry went
But no fun, only a crazy aunt was sent
But, finally that aunt pushed Harry too far
So he blew her up like a balloon without a pain to his scar
But, Harry ran off as he knew there would be trouble
However, in the street, what he found only made him stumble.

A dog, is that what that was?
Harry had no time to tell just because
What was that, that was making that fuss?
Ok, what the heck is the Night Bus?
A Night Bus it was and it would take him away
To the Leaky Cauldron where Harry would stay
Because he now knew a loose killer was being hunted
Wait, did Mr. Weasley say it was Harry, Sirius Black wanted?

A killer after Harry, well there was no time to worry
No, Hogwart’s Train was leaving oh Harry hurry!
Harry told Hermione and Ron it was he who the killer had escaped to kill
As Professor Lupin took a nap by the window sill
But, what was that Ron just saw outside?
Everything went dark and no more was that peaceful train ride
Yikes, it was a creature, one that made Harry faint and shake
A dementor it was called and happiness it liked to take.

Professor Lupin made that horrible creature go away
But, in Harry’s mind that dementor would stay
And Professor Trelawney said in Harry’s forecast was death
His cup said the Grim which took away some of the student’s breath
Hagrid now taught Care of Magical Creatures, yay!
But, Malfoy wouldn’t forget that day
Not with that kick he got from Buckbeak the Hippogriff beast
But, all knew Lucius Malfoy’s temper for that kick would never be released.

Hogsmeade visits had now begun
But, without a form Harry’s fun was done
Wait why was the Fat Lady gone from her usual place?
It was Sirius Black that had invaded the Lady’s space!
The castle was put on lockdown afraid of the man, Black
But, alas he was gone without a trace of coming back
And during Quidditch, dementors were around
Causing Harry to faint and fall down, down, down to the ground.

With the game over and Harry’s broom in tatters
He wished to go to the village to catch up on friend matters
But when he tried to use his powerful cloak
The twins grabbed Harry as they had something for the bloke
The Marauder’s Map was a great way to leave the school
You could see people and passages which was very cool
Harry found Hermione and Ron in Hogsmeade when he got out
But, what he heard from Cornelius Fudge was bad, without a doubt.

Sirius Black had killed Peter Pettigrew and left only a finger?
But, Sirius was Harry’s godfather which didn’t make Harry linger.
Back at Hogwarts, Buckbeak had been sentenced to die
And Harry recruited Professor Lupin’s help to rid him of the Dementor’s evil cry
Exams were near and Trelawney says Voldemort will return before the day ends.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to see Buckbeak die since they are good friends
Buckbeak is killed, but wait is that Scabbers the rat and didn’t the cat kill him?
And a dog takes Ron under the Whomping Willow under the tree limb.

That was no dog, no it was Sirius Black
And Lupin came in and said Sirius can get pay back
But, wait Sirius didn't want Harry dead
No, it was Peter who betrayed Harry’s parents and caused all the dread.
Peter was Scabbers the rat?
Harry decided to let the Dementors have a go at that.
Professor Lupin is a Werewolf and Sirius and Harry nearly die from that thing.
Peter got away and Sirius will die from what those dementors will surely bring.

An innocent man will loose his soul?
But, Professor Dumbledore had a loop hole.
Hermione got her time tuner out
And saving innocent lives is what Harry and Hermione had to bring about.
Wait, Buckbeak is not yet dead?
They save him, but Harry thinks his dad saved him by the lake bed
No, no it was Harry who saved them before
Sirius and Buckbeak are safe, but would Peter show up anymore?

Harry talked to Lupin who told him he did the right thing
But, Harry thought it meant nothing.
However, Sirius was free from a terrible fate
And Harry knew he would see him at a later date
So, another Hogwarts year had come to an end
But, Harry knew this was a normal trend.
Two lives were saved and Harry helped that come true
So, goodbye to Hogwarts for another year and we will miss you.

Ok, well I did correct a couple of the many mistakes I see in this just because I couldn't help it, but besides a couple of slight changes, it is the same as it was when it was sent to Kennedy.

The Hufflepuff one. Based on book two.

It’s fairly easy to tell
The year didn’t start out too well
Not a word from a friend
I was at a loose end
But things got a lot worse than that.

I was fine looking after myself
Till I met that darned house-elf
He picked up a cake
I felt the house shake
As it fell on the floor with a splat.

That caused a great deal of trouble
It fairly well burst my bubble
The Dursleys hated the boom
Locked me up in my room
And saved some tax on their VAT.

It’s just as well Ron picked me up
I was eating the food of a Crup
The Weasleys were a little bored
Paid a visit in their flying Ford
Didn’t matter that the tyres were flat.

Soon we came to Ron’s house ‘The Burrow’
His mum’s brow set in a definite furrow
To Diagon Alley by Floo we were sent
(My glasses picked up another dent)
And we bumped into that Malfoy brat.

I was glad to go back to school
Don’t know how I could be such a fool
Up to the barrier we flounced
But that barrier bounced
Hard enough to knock off my hat.

We were stuck at King’s Cross Station
And that’s no exaggeration
Our minds just froze,
And the option we chose
Was just as clever as a doormat.

We soared through the rain and the cloud
Turned out it wasn’t allowed
We got Whomped by the Willow
- not as soft as a pillow
And Snape dropped by for a chat.

My teacher Professor Lockhart
Really gave me quite a start
He thought I wanted publicity
And was prepared to be bashed by a tree
I Soon got fed up with that tittle-tat.

Things soon took a sinister turn
And my stomach began to churn
Hearing voices isn’t good
That much I understood
Lockhart missed them where he sat.

Defence lessons were just a joke
Involved lies and a lot of smoke
Ron’s ear was bitten by a pixie
That had proved to be just too tricksy
It did away with Lockhart’s hat.

On Halloween we found out ghosts
Feed on decaying food the most
Going back I heard a hiss
It wasn’t exactly hard to miss
And soon Filch thought I’d murdered his cat.

We were all convinced it was Malfoy
And no one else but that hateful boy
Of course it was Ginny
(That boy’s just too skinny)
But right then we didn’t know that.

We had to hear from Malfoy himself
And so it was that we laid plans of stealth:
That through hours of toil
We’d impersonate Crabbe and Goyle.
Whatever the costs of being fat.

Meanwhile we played Quidditch
I ended up sprawled in a ditch
It was all the fault of a Bludger
That came after me without a nudger
More persistent than a Beater’s Bat.

This potion by the name of Polyjuice
Took some brain power to deduce
But with Hermione on our side
It didn’t take long to decide
Our problem was where to find Boomslang at.

With those two goons gorged
Their identities were forged
It didn’t exactly taste fab
But then, it was essence of Crabbe
You try drinking pure fat.

It didn’t feel good being as large
As my good old aunt Marge
Wasn’t worth it of course
- Malfoy didn’t know the source,
But Hermione now looked like a cat.

That diary was trying to be a turtle
In the toilet of Moaning Myrtle
I wrote in it and Riddle wrote back
Trying to get Hagrid the sack
It’s a shame I believed his tittle-tat.

We went to see Aragog
He frightened even Fang the dog
Was thanks to that enchanted car
That we got out without a scar
And we’d only gone for a chat.

People kept on being Petrified
But as of yet no one had died
It was a shock when they took Ron’s sister
It was all too clear he missed her
So I went down the Chamber just for that.

Moaning Myrtle showed me the way
Down the tunnel on that frightful day
It didn’t go too well for Lockhart
Who lost his memory as an art
But it was Riddle’s presence that knocked me flat.

The Basilisk was coming my way
It would soon be time for me to pay
I closed my eyes
Wished for its demise
As I awaited mortal combat.

Riddle scoffed at the phoenix song
He really couldn’t have been more wrong
I thought I was going to die
When Fawkes began to cry
But then I strengthened as I sat.

In I plunged the lethal fang
No incantations, no bang
But Riddle disappeared from sight
As though it were just a dream at night
All thanks to the Sorting Hat!

Slytherins poem. Year one.

Harry Potter was no average boy.
He never knew much joy.
His parents had died in embers of hate,
Both of which surrounded the scar of his fate.
A mystery shadowed him wherever he went,
The confusion was enough to be torment.
He knew naught what lay ahead of him,
Only many more years without his whims.

For he lived with his mother's sister,
Who was never anything to him but sinister.
She was married to a beefy man,
Who treated Harry like a trash can.
They had a little monster child.
His pleasure was getting Harry riled.
The Boy-Who-Lived dealt with this,
With strange happenings that caused him no bliss.

One day while they were eating, an owl did appear,
The letter in which its claws did hold, would bring him joy and fear.
The meaning of said letter, would stay hidden for a time,
When a giant of a man, hand delivered it onetime.
To Hogwarts you're invited, where great wizards of the past have stayed,
They learned and fought for their beliefs, in friends they found their aids.
We welcome you to join us, we're not crack pot old fools,
You arn't the only one, you see, you'll find many at our school.

Upon arriving for the train, his station could not be found,
Platform 9 and 3/4 was out of site, when he looked around.
He found a family who would be of help, with hair the brightest red,
Him and Ron would become best of friends, to help him through the dred.
They later met a young girl, upon the moving train,
With her brains and cleverness, Hermione was her name.
She came upon them by mistake, while looking for a toad,
She did not know at the moment, but her fate was not forebode.

When Hogwart's towers came into view,
Harry then knew it could not be untrue.
For the gleaming gray stones were as real as real can be,
And the hollering of Hagrid was to the loudest degree.
His heart thudded painfully as both him and Ron approached.
His mind reeled as he considered the line he had broached.
Neither quite knew what was in store for them,
Or what the castle would condemn.

Their stomach's seized as the time came to be Sorted,
Ron only knew what his unreliable twins supported.
So with a surprise they found themselves facing a hat,
One that both spoke and had the cunning of a cat.
It told many to which House they were to belong.
After it sang its famous Sorting Hat song.
The scared feeling that seeped into Harry was hard to ignore,
But it proved needless as both him and Ron was Sorted into Gryffindor.

The beginning of the year was full of awe.
Though Harry's muggle knowledge was difficult to withdraw.
Hogwarts had many different things to tell,
Such as ancient magic, history, mysteries and spells.
He befriended many different people, all of which had heard of his scar,
Which was soon to be the reason behind all that was bizarre.
Though Harry tried to ignore unwanted trouble,
He would soon realize all his fears were going to double.

It started with the finding of a three-headed beast,
That nearly succeeded in making all four Gryffindors deceased.
The snarling dog happened to belong to Hagrid, who gave the unsuitable name,
Of Fluffy, which told that the giant believed the dog to be tame.
Neither Harry, Ron or Hermione knew that this was the beginning of the end,
And that they were soon to become inseparable friends.
They worked hard together, always getting into trouble,
Soon to shatter Hogwarts image of a perfect little bubble.

On Halloween more trouble occurred and a troll was let into the school.
The students were ordered to stay in the great hall, a spur of the moment rule.
It entered the area Hermione was in, so the boys knew they had to help her,
They defied the new rule and ran to search, and in the end had to concur,
On a lie of what really happened, to keep them from being expelled,
When they connect Voldemort to the unicorn, then they feel compelled
To sneak out at night and get past the dog, to find and save the stone,
But to get past him music is needed, not a doggy bone.

Our three heroes make it through the challenges, set up to keep them out,
But Harry makes it through the end alone, with only a bit of doubt.
He faces Professor Quirrel, hosting Voldie in the back of his head,
Without Quirrel and his turban, Voldie knows that he would be dead.
They place Harry in front of the mirror, using magic to hold the stone of life,
Where his wishes to have and not use it, but to save it from Voldie were rife.
A fight goes on below the school, leaving Quirrel for death,
The only visible sign of life his breath.

In the infirmary Harry awakens, to a man with hair of silver at his side,
Dumbledore informs the boy who lived yet again, he could of easily of died.
The headmaster also tells Harry the stone, to which caused all his distress,
Flamels philosopher's stone, is to be destoryed and nothing less.
Harry walks to the great hall, alit with green banners, everything seems sorted
Slytherin claims victory on the house cup but with last minute points awarded
It's Gryffindor whos victory it is now, due to Harry, Ron and
Hermiones great feats
But all things must come to an end, as on the train they take their seats.
