Ella sighed as she watched the people around her chatting happily to their friends. The Gryffindor first year was snuggled up on a couch in the corner of the room, surveying the crowds wistfully, wishing that she could have friends like the ones that were talking before her.
Closing her eyes, Ella attempted to go to sleep, until she felt the presence of someone standing in front of her. Looking up, Ella gazed into the eyes of...

Melody jumped off the last step as she came down from her Gryffindor dormitory. She was in a good mood. She had finished all her homework and now it was time to celebrate. Humming a 60's song to herself, she walked across the room and allowed the brightness of the flames in the fire to burn into her eyes. It was so alive! So was most of creation today. It was May, and May meant that everything had witnessed its miraculous growth over March and April and was now in its prime. Alive, not scorched, and happy. Which meant that Melody was happy.
Melody walked over to a window and tried to sit down on a couch in front of it so she could have a look at the stars from a leisurely position. Except, as she realised at the last moment, there was already someone lounging there. Melody turned round and eyed the occupier of the sofa. She looked like a first year, and a little tired and lonely. Melody folded her arms as the first year looked up. Melody hoped she hadn't realised that she had been about to sit on her. Melody smiled slightly at the girl before speaking. She didn't want to scare her off. Some company for the evening might be entertaining. "Now t'en, budge up, yer canna take up all this space. Besides, yer will nae make friends by bein' on yer own. Now t'en, what's yer name. Meself, call me Melody."

Katrina slouched into the Gryffindor Common room as she thought about that day's events. Homework, homework and MORE homework. When do we get holidays? Argh! Katrina was just about to slouch up the stairs to her dorm when something interesting caught her eye. She turned her head towards it and saw something that made her fell a bit happier. She saw someone that looked a lot like Melody that was about to sit on a chair. A chair that was already occupied by a first-year. Feeling a bit happier seeing someone that needed a friend, she walked towards the pair and saw her fellow dorm mate, Melody.
So it really WAS Melody. Getting back to her senses, Katrina shouted, "Oy Melody! How are ya?" She shouted that a little too loud, earning her some stares from everyone. "Opps, sorry!!" When she was sure Melody could hear her without shouting, she said,"Hi Melody! How are ya? Oh, and hi there!! Katrina here! I see you've made good friends with Melody!" She looked at the first-year, waiting for a reply.

Danielle was tired, angry and sad. Mostly disappointed in herself because she hadn't made any friends. Why do I have to be so shy she thought to herself. As she started toward the stairs she saw a couple girls talking. They all looked about her age. I wonder if they'd mind if I joined them she thought. Finally after arguing with herself silently she walked toward them. "Hi, my name's Danielle Pewter."

When Danielle had finished talking, Harriet went over to introduce herself. "Hi, my name's Harriet Everstone." She sat there waiting for Danielle to reply

"Hi, my name's Harriet Everstone." The girl said. Danielle smiled and looked at her. "Hi, Harriet! If you haven't heard already my name is Danielle Pewter. So, what year are you? I'm a first year so some stuff is a little new." She said, the she looked around and sat on a couch. It was nice and soft, very comfortable. As she leaned back in her seat her kitten jumped onto her lap. "Kitty!" Danielle exclaimed, beginning to pet her kitten. "Oh, this little fuzzball." She motioned toward Kitty. "Is my cute little kitten, Kitty. As you can see she is very lovable and furry. You can pet her if you like." Danielle held out Kitty for her to take if she wanted.

Harriet was pleased-she now knew another first year in her house. She held Danielles kitten for a while. She gave it a toy mouse. She then offered Danielle a chocolate frog. She wondered if she wanted to trade Wizard Cards later and if she'd like to play with her cat,Star?
She told Danielle she was a first year too.

Arabella was still on that awesome high from being promoted to awesome second yearness.
Could you blame her? No, you couldn't. Nor could her puppetmaster. After all, being a second year was way better than being an ickle firstie.
For one thing, Arabella now knew actual spells that those little first years couldn't even defend themselves from, let alone cast back at her. And she was bigger, stronger, tougher. Arabella felt like a lioness as she entered the common room. Which was fitting, since it was the Gryffindor common room she was entering.
Ah, fresh meat. Ok, so it had a seasoning of cartilage (ie, other second years) but essentially it was ickle firsties ripe for the picking on. Those two other second years, who Arabella dimly recalled from lessons but couldn't actually place, would either join in or opt out. The idea of people standing up to her was just ludicrous.
"Hi girls," Arabella greeted the small group. "All done our homework? Ready for tomorrow?"
She turned and addressed the first years.
"I only ask because I wouldn't want you to get in trouble. You know what McGonagall does to people who don't hand their homework in on time, don't you?"

"You're a firstie too? That's awesome! I haven't met many that are in Gryffindor yet. Sure, what are they?" Danielle asked taking a chocolate frog. She just held it for a moment then sat it down. She'd eat it later once she knew what it was. Danielle sat in silence for a while thinking about various things. From different flavors of bubble gum, to zebras, for example. What color are zebras? I know they're striped but with what color? They could be black with white stripes, or white with black stripes! Black and white stripes together? Or maybe...Purple with black and white stripes covering them! That would be so cool. Then there's penguins they're so adorable! With their little feet and... She snapped back to reality upon hearing a voice.
"All done our homework? Ready for tomorrow?" The person said. Then turning to Harriet and Danielle said. "I only ask because I don't want you to get in trouble. You know what McGonagall does to people who don't hand their homework in on time, don't you?" She said. Danielle stared lazily at her with an eyebrow raised. "Yeah, I've gotten mine all done. Perfectly ready for tomorrow. But please, do tell me what McGonagall does if homework isn't turned in on time. I'd like to know so if I ever forget anything, I have an idea of to expect."

"Well," Arabella sat down next to the girl, ready to share all the juicy lies gossip. "First, she gives you a week's worth of detentions. Then, she transfigures you into a small creature. Like a rat, or a budgerigar, and locks you in that cage in her her office. For a whole night! And when she changes you back, you have Transfiguration Residue for the entire day afterwards. It happened to a friend of a friend of mine last year."
Arabella paused to make sure their reactions were of the shocked and horrified variety before continuing.
"Why did you think our house was the best? It's because we have the most ruthless head teacher."

Harriet was suspicious-it didn't seem as though Arabella was being truthful-though she'd mention that to Danielle later. "Chocolate Frogs are candies that come with a famous witch or wizard card, you have to eat the frog quick or it jumps and does a runner. " She hoped that helped Danielle understand. She was still puzzled as to why Arabella was trying to scare first years-why she trying to intimidate her? She couldn't be sure if she was right.

"Oh, I've never eaten moving chocolate before. You're sure they're edible right? Only one way to find out." Danielle said. She grabbed the candy and carefully opened it up. As soon as that was done she grabbed the frog in her hand, staring at it as if it'd bite her. Hesitating slightly she brought it to her mouth and ate it. Yup, it was chocolate alright. At first she hadn't been sure because it was moving but it was actually quite good. "These are so good! Where'd you get them, I need more chocolate!" Danielle asked excitedly.
It was then when the girl (she hadn't introduced herself yet) began to explain McGonagalls punishment. She has a big imagination. Bigger than mine even! The professors aren't even aloud to use magic on us! I think. Probably wants to try and scare us, or something. That girl isn't very good at it though. Figuring that it was a lie Danielle decided to say something about it. "Wow! I cannot believe how good of a lier you are! You'd make a great story teller. But I was wondering. Why aren't you in Slytherin? It seems you'd fit in nicely." Danielle said, smiling sweetly at her. "I have another question too. What's your name?"

Harriet told Danielle she had the frogs ordered from Honeydukes along with some other candy. Harriet asked the anonymous girl if she needed directions to Slytherins' Common room.
