“C’mon Blade don’t let Kyra see you like this!” Delaine screamed as the sound of shattering glass was heard on the wall. Kyra winced as she stared at the locked door to her room. “She has seen me like this before, so why stop now? Kyra is my daughter, Laine, I know what she can hear and what she can’t!” Kyra’s step-father, Blade, shouted right back. Kyra looked up from her constant gaze at the floor she had started. She hated this home, these screams, and the bruises. She hated the bruises most of all. Kyra dreaded coming home. She tried to avoid it, but it didn’t usually work. Her family lived in a cottage in Hogsmeade. The so called cottage was more like a shack or as Ellie thought of it, a hell-hole. It had two bedrooms, a bathroom, a tiny half-bath, and a combo kitchen and living space. The Ravenclaw Common Room was more spacious. This was no home. Kyra was thankful that she at least didn’t have to stay the night. She wouldn’t be able to handle that. Blade insisted that Kyra come home on every Hogsmeade weekend for at least two hours. Every time she came home, the shouting never ceased. Kyra would just lock herself in her room as she was afraid of what would occur if she was near her parents. At least Layne wasn’t home. Kyra’s seven year old half-sister spent a lot of time with her aunt, Chloe, across the village. Even hurtful Blade knew that Layne couldn’t be exposed to this. If only he thought the same thing for Kyra.
“Now, she’s MY daughter!” Delaine persisted. Kyra winced, she knew what would happen now. She looked up from her parchment as she heard a loud sound and a scream. Then, deep breathing. Kyra waited for the voice. Please, please. She thought. Delaine was always okay after the blow if she said something. Say something, say something. Ellie prayed silently. “I’ll go get Kyra.” Delaine said shakily. Kyra took a deep breath. It was over for now. Blade only ever delivered one punch and did this nearly once a week or so. There was a knock on Kyra’s door. “It’s me.” Delaine said. Kyra stared at the door fretting the moment that she would have to open it. She walked to her door and pried it open. “Yes?” She asked trying to act normal as always. A deep purple bruise was already forming on Delaine’s cheek. “Go get Layne now. Then, you can go back to school.” Delaine said acting normal as well. Kyra nodded. She then moved past Delaine and walked down the tiny hall to the main room. She moved quickly as to not talk to Blade. Kyra’s fingers touch the doorknob. “Hey.” Blade said firmly. Lyra looked back shakily. “You have half an hour. I’ll time you.” He told her in his possessive voice. Kyra knew that he meant it. She nodded and left the hell-hole as fast as she could.
Snow started to fall as Kyra neared Chloe’s cottage. It was the prettiest place in Hogsmeade in Kyra’s opinion. Chloe kept flowers around year round with magic and it was so warm and home -like. This was the closest thing to a real home that Kyra had. Well, besides Hogwarts. She smiled up as the snow fell on her head. She held out her tongue like a little kid as she knocked on Chloe’s door. It only took moments before Chloe opened it and saw Kyra with her mouth open. Chloe laugh. “And this is the child that everyone is so proud of.” Chloe said grinning at her niece. Proud? This was something that Blade made up. Kyra was sure of it. “Hi to you too, Chloe.” Kyra said stepping into the house with her black boots and taking off her beanie. Kyra looked around. Everything was the same from the honey colored walls to the cherry wood furniture. Kyra smiled brightly as she did every time she entered Chloe’s house. Kyra smiled seeing Layne’s little figure. “Hey short stuff.” Kyra laughed as Layne ran over and hugged her sister’s legs. “Hiya.” Layne said holding her sister tight. Chloe walked over. “So, how are they?” She asked. Kyra knew who she meant. Chloe rarely talked to her sister and brother-in-law, but she kept Layne regularly. Blade never hit Layne so Layne didn’t tell Chloe about it. She just told her they fought a lot. Kyra gulped. “Fine.” She said dryly. “Good.” Chloe said nodding and yet not believing a word Kyra said. “I should get her back.” Kyra said pointing to Layne. Chloe nodded. Layne picked up her back pack and followed Kyra out the door. “See ya tomorrow Chloe.” Layne said brightly. “Yea, tomorrow hun.” Chloe called as Kyra slammed the door.
Ten minutes later, Kyra and Layne walked up to the door. “And then Chloe let me go see Security.” Layne babbled on joyfully as she talked about Chloe’s old horse. Kyra nodded. “Fun.” She said quietly. Ellie had always been the master of the one word sentence. Her motto had always been, “One words says a lot.” As they approached the little cottage, Kyra could already hear the screaming. “Stay here Layne.” Kyra commanded her sister. Layne nodded understanding.Kyra inched closer. She could hear the words clearly. “She needs to be taught a lesson! All she does is break my rules!” He screamed. Kyra flinched. “She tries Blade! We all do.” Delaine said trying not to cry. “She’s just going to tear us from Layne. That’s what she’s trying to do. She needs to be taught.” Kyra couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “What? She tries too hard Blade and all you do is hurt her!” She screamed. Kyra heard the punch from outside and the lapse of breath. She heard Delaine fall and then weakly get back up. “We need her and so does Layne.” Kyra gasped. She had never heard Delaine defend her before. However, Kyra was sure that it was the alcohol talking. Kyra turned around and went back to Layne. “C’mon on Layne. We’re going back to Chloe’s.” Kyra said taking Layne’s hand and guiding her towards Chloe’s house. “But,” Layne started. “No, buts Layne. We need to get away from that house, now.”
Chloe opened the door after hearing the knock. She gasped at the snowy wet sight of Layne and Kyra. “What are you..” Chloe started. “We had to get out of there.” Kyra said pulling Layne inside. Chloe shut the door. “Layne go color.” Chloe told her. Layne nodded. She took orders well and knew her place. She skipped along to the drawing room merrily. Chloe looked frantic. “I thought you said they were good.” Chloe said firmly treating Kyra like the adult that she was. “I lied.” Kyra admitted. “It’s not good. But, you knew that, right?” Kyra asked already knowing the answer. “Yea, I guess I did.” She said shakily. “They were arguing about me. Seems that Blade thinks I need a lesson.” Kyra said lowering her head. She looked up at Chloe with tears in her eyes. “Why does he hate me?” She asked. Chloe gave her a sad look. “C’mon here hunn.” Chloe said embracing her niece. A tear escaped Kyra’s eyes. She hated crying, she hated being weak. But, this situation was beyond her control. Kyra looked at her aunt. “Why?” She asked. Chloe shook her head. “Because he can.”
“What am I going to do?” Kyra asked. “How am I supposed to come back each weekend and then live there in the summer?” She asked. Chloe gave Kyra a sympathetic look. “Just how I did.” Chloe said softly. Kyra knew that Chloe had lived just like Kyra was living now. Chloe looked at Kyra softly and yet Kyra could see the tears forming in her eyes. “Get through the pain, Kyra. For now, be there for Layne. I would offer to keep you here and get you away from Blade, but I can’t do that until..” Chloe paused checking over her shoulder. She looked at Kyra. “Until, we get Layne out of there and in the hands of someone who can take real care of her. Do you understand?” Kyra nodded. “How long will that take?” She asked. Chloe sighed. “It could take years, Kyra, but it’s for the best.” Kyra nodded. “So, I’m just supposed to go back and face him like everything is normal?” She asked with a strong aspect to her tone. Chloe nodded. “Yes.”
Innocent
I’m innocent. I’ve done nothing wrong. I’ve never hurt him and neither has she. Then, why does he hurt me? I can’t hide the bruises. The stupidest of people notice them. Maybe, I don’t want to hide them. It’s too hard, it hurts too much. Why do I put up with this? I could just leave. I could. But, I’m not that stupid. Layne needs me and I can’t leave her here. Delaine can handle herself or at least she says that she can. After all of these years of putting up with Blade, I just let mum deal by herself. We could be out of this in a millisecond, but mum says she loves him. If she loves him, then I don’t believe in love. Is it love that makes him beat us? Is it love that screams at us each day? Is love all of the threats that he sends us? If that’s love, then I don’t believe in it. I don’t believe in hurt, so I don’t believe in love. If he loves us like he used to say that he did, then he wouldn’t do this to us. He wouldn’t hurt us like this. I used to like him, I used to trust him. Blade was so secure. He made me feel so safe. Then, he just kept pushing and making new rules. He broke the meaning of secure. Innocent.
