Three inches of snow covered the Hogwart's Grounds. The lake had an icy sort of film covering over it. Ciaran loved fresh snow. Ciaran usually only saw snow at Hogwarts a few times a year and none after that. Snow was actually one of the best things about winter. Maybe it was that snow made everything seem less important. It didn't matter, snow just made everything at Hogwarts seem even more magical. Ciaran walked out into the grounds with his Gryffindor Robes, scarf, and gloves draped over him to keep the cold away. Ciaran looked over his head as he walked. He noticed a figure in the sky. What the heck was that? It was snowy white just like the fresh snow that was spread about the ground. Ciaran smiled as he realized what it was. Niamh. Niamh was Ciaran's Snow Owl that he got two years before. Niamh flew gracefully and landed on Ciaran's shoulder. Ciaran grinned. "Niamh?" Ciaran said still grinning. "Wow, I barely ever see you during the Winter months." Niamh made a low owl noise and then dropped a letter into Ciaran's hands. It was from Finnea. How surprising. Actually, Ciaran had received a letter from Finnea everyday for three weeks. It was rather annoying, actually. Finn had a job and lots of other stuff to do. But, no, she would rather pester her younger brother for fun. Ciaran nodded to Niamh as she made a low noise and than flew off. Ciaran flipped open the letter. He laughed. Oh, silly Finnea. Get some friends Finn. Ciaran thought to himself.
All Finnea talked about was work and Adam. Adam was Kia's cousin that Finn had shamelessly flirted with at the park over the summer. They had been writing each other letters ever since then. Finn really didn't have time for this new little boy toy. Because no doubt Finn would try and rip his heart out, but he was tired of telling Finn this. She just liked to babble on and on about Adam and then every now and then she would mentioned work. Ciaran sighed and put the letter in his pocket. He would write Finn back later. He walked further out into the grounds. Ciaran made his way near a cliff near the lake. He stood over the edge looking at the icy water beneath him. It would be horrible to actually fall into that water. It was so cold that hypothermia would probably be the first symptoms of hitting the icy surface. Of course, the lake could never completely ice over with plain nature, but it was all icy and freezing beneath the surface. Ciaran looked down at the calm water that barely moved at all. How could the Giant Squid even survive in that weather? Or the Murpeople? Ciaran shook his head lightly. Suddenly, he heard foot steps behind him. It shocked him so bad that he nearly fell over the edge of the cliff into the icy lake. However, he stood his footing at the last second and moved a few feet away from the edge. That was close. Ciaran looked into the face of the person there that he hadn't expected.

Caiest sighed as she looked out of the dorm room window there was a lot of snow on the ground and she hated snow. To be completely honest she hated winter in general. She loved the things accompanied with winter like the holidays, and the knowledge that the year was almost over and a new one was about to begin. But the cold she could definately do without. She hated the cold. That was why she couldn't wait to graduate from Hogwarts and live in a place where Summer was always there then she wouldn't have to deal with things like snow and ice and biting winds.
Despite her immense dislike for the cold Caiest was bored to tears being inside so she decided that she would brave the low temperatures and go outside anyway. Caiest put on her pretty long and warm over coat that was a deep shade of green that her Aunt had bought her for Christmas. The green of her coat and the red of her hair made her seem very Christmasy even though the holiday was over.
Caiest walked outside and pulled her green and silver scarf tighter across her face so that the cold couldn't get in. Walking towards the lake she saw another boy around her age out. He was on a cliff looking at the lake. Wondering what was so interesting about that icy death trap Caiest made her way towards him. Unfortunately her approach almost made him fall off. Caiest was relieved to see he got his footing at the last second. "Might want to be more careful there. Wouldn't want to fall into that in these temperatures."

Ciaran breathed deeply seeing the girl in front of him. Man, that was a really close call. Ciaran nodded. He was still getting over the fact that her nearly feeling into freezing, icy water. That fall would have hurt a lot, especially when he hit the icy surface. Ciaran looked at the girl as he tried to regain normal breathing once again. "Yea, that wouldn't have been fun." He said trying to act calmly. "Sorry, I just wasn't expecting anyone to be anywhere near here. It's freezing out here after all." Ciaran said calmly. "I know most students are all warm and snug in their common rooms. And now, I'm just realizing how crazy I was to come out her and stand so close to the edge." Ciaran said smiling a small bit as he looked over the edge into the water. "Well, thankfully I didn't fall." He said confidently. That would have put a huge damper on his perfectly fine day. Ciaran loved winter weather, but he was starting to realize that it was completely stupid to come outside. Suddenly, more snow started to fall. It was so light though that Ciaran barely felt it at all. Ciaran smiled up at the sky. "Wow, great timing." He said softly as he let the snow fall on his face. Ciaran really did love falling snow even though his face was fastly getting colder. Snow was just so, not boring. It never made Ciaran remotely bored. Actually, it gave him something to do, something to be preoccupied with besides rules and school work. Ciaran needed to take his mind off that stuff every now and then.
Ciaran looked at the girl standing before him as the snow continued to fall. She seemed to be about the same year that Ciaran was in. He guessed that she was a Slytherin just by her choice of clothing, but she hadn't exactly had the typical Slytherin attitude just yet. But, of course, not all Slytherins were the typical definition of a Slytherin. But, Ciaran just decided to wait and see with this girl. "Oh, I'm Ciaran by the way." Ciaran said calmly deciding to introduce himself. "So, what made you decide to brave this weather?" He asked just trying to make casual conversation. Suddenly, Ciaran heard something near the lake. He turned his head and for a brief moment he thought he saw a slimy arm or something of that nature. But, the moment passed before Ciaran could really see the creature. Ciaran smiled. All these years there were rumors that the Black Lake had a giant Squid living in it. Of course, this had not been proven to every student. Ciaran looked at the girl. "Did you see that?" He asked pointing to the lake. Ciaran hoped he wasn't hallucinating. Ciaran waited for the girl to respond.

Caiest waited for the boy to recover from his very close call. She almost felt sorry for him he seemed very very freaked out at the moment. Though honestly she couldn't blame him. If she had almost fallen off a cliff into the icy depths below him she'd be pretty freaked out as well. Though she wouldn't still be standing there she would have moved closer to solid land but that was just her. Caiest tugged the sleeves of her coat down more so that they would cover more of her hands as Ciaran talked about not expecting another person to come and brave the cold like he was doing. "yeah it's a very good thing you didn't fall. I'm no medical expert but judging from the looks of that water 10 minutes in that lake and you'd be dead of hypothermia or at the very least be suffering from some severe frost bite."
Caiest sighed as it started snowing again. She pulled her scarf even tighter. Part of her wished she hadn't decided that it would be more interesting outside the castle instead of in. Even though it really was more interesting outside. If she had stayed inside she wouldn't have gotten to see this boy almost fall into water or stand in the snow. Being outside in snow wasn't something she'd done willingly in a long time. Caiest shook her head shaking some of the snow out of her hair and also clearing her head of the thoughts of the past. She smiled as Ciaran introduced himself and asked what she was doing outside. Most people in another house apart from Slytherin wouldn't give her the time of day. It made her think better of him. "My name is Caiest and I'm out here because it seemed more interesting then staring at the walls of a castle. How about you? What made you decide to brave the cold and stand on cliffs above the lake?" She scowled at the lake she really wasn't comfortable standing so close to the edge of a cliff but she wouldn't say anything in case Ciaran decided she was too chicken to talk to. While scowling at the lake she saw the arm of the lake squid skim across the top. "huh guess my sister wasn't lying." She said more to herself then Ciaran. She smiled as Ciaran asked if she had seen it. "Yep I saw it too and that means the squid either exisists or we're going insane. Both are entirely possible."
