Edward couldn't remember the last time he was so busy. The Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade was a flurry of activity today, and Ed was the only server they had on the schedule today. Ed liked to work here during his summer vacation, it was a nice quiet atmosphere without all the students around, and the money was decent. Madame Rosmerta, in an attempt to drive in some new summer customers, had put up a new pie promotion, and it did the trick fairly well. He darted from table to table, taking orders, refilling drinks, and delivering food. Still, he always seemed to be behind and couldn't seem to catch. “Ed! Table 5 needs new drinks!” “Ed! Table 12 is still waiting for their food order!” “Ed! Table 15 hasn't had their order taken yet and they've been here for nearly 20 minutes!” Ed wailed hopelessly as he fought to keep up with the rising tide of customers.
This summer had been one of the most brutal ones in Edward's life. He was heading into his 6th year at Hogwarts. That meant his summer homework load had received a huge increase, there was going to be many more course books required this time around, and he now had the added bonus of studying for his apparating license. If school work wasn't enough he still had to keep up with his busy schedule of summer work. The increase in school books this year had forced him to find yet another job to add to the list. 7 days a week at various places in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, late nights spent cramming and doing homework. It was a wonder that Edward still remained sane.
He suddenly remembered that he had forgotten an order on the pass. Edward quickly ran toward the kitchen, nearly running over a small child on his way. He quickly snatched up the tray of food and darted back into the dining room. Agility and dexterity had never been Ed's strong suits, and he probably should have remembered that fact. Ed exploded into the dining room, only to immediately encounter problems in the packed quarters. He was forced to sidestep a customer, causing everything on his tray to slide slightly and shift the center of balance. Edward began to loose the tray, “Oh no no no no!” He stammered, quickly staggering to the side in an attempt to wrestle the tray under control. He over corrected, sending the contents sliding the other way. Somehow, unknown to Ed, he was steadily making his way toward the table that had ordered the food, although he still hadn't managed to control the tray yet.
To his credit, he almost made it. Somehow the tray started to listen to his orders and settle. Just then a random chair leg decided to attack him, or he just didn't see it. His ankle struck the leg hard and sent him toppling foreword, showering the contents of the tray over the people sitting at the table. “Oh my! I'm terribly sorry. Let me go get you a new order.” The patrons looked non to pleased as they pulled out their wands to clean themselves. Edward ran into the back to re send in their order. Finally, after 8 more dropped trays, 12 wrong orders, and 9 bodily collisions, his shift was over. “I'm sorry about all the mistakes today.” Edward told Madam Rosmerta as he collected his bag from the back of the house. “Don't worry too much about it,” she told him, “It was a rather crazy day.”
With that Edward exited the building, stepping out into the bright sunshine of the summer afternoon. He didn't go far though, he had to do some studying on apparating today, and he could think of no better place to do that then right here in the sunshine. Next to the three broomsticks sat a nice patch of grass with a big oak tree, the tree cast just enough shade to make it bearable, without taking away from the pleasure of the sun. Edward parked himself against the tree and leaned back, he took out his book and opened it, but shut his eyes for a moment to enjoy the sun. He could feel all the stress of the day leaking out of his sore muscles, and just like that, Edward was fast asleep. His glasses askew on his face and snoring quiet contently in the shade of the oak.
