Sunday August 7th was a bright and sunny day in Diagon Alley. As the Fall Term drew near for Hogwarts' students, most shopkeepers had hired on extra help for the busy shopping season. When the clocks struck eight o'clock, all shops opened and they were met by a rush of early bird shoppers. As the morning pressed on and turned to afternoon, more and more shoppers filled the shops and the Alley itself was soon a crowded mass of people.
One minute before one o'clock in the heart of the Diagon Alley, Magical Menagerie exploded in a giant ball of flames. Screams of terror erupted in the alley as frightened people ran in fear and others ran toward the demolished shop looking to help the victims. As the clock struck one o'clock, a thunderous BOOM echoed throughout Diagon Alley as a port key opened up and emerging from the port key were half a dozen figures dressed in black hooded robes and a pair of giants!
Immediately hexes and curses began flying about the alley as Death Eaters attacked at will, while the Giants began to smash nearby buildings. Most people ran for cover from the attack, the few who stayed to try and fight were quickly taken down by Death Eaters or flying debris from buildings. Soon the Death Eaters headed down the alley toward Olivander's while the two giants headed the other way toward Gringotts.
Within minutes squads of Aurors had arrived in the alley and engaged the Death Eaters in an intense battle that was decisively against the Aurors. With frighten citizens running about, the Aurors were forced to protect and usher citizens to safety. Meanwhile the Death Eaters were just as willing to send their hexes at the fleeing citizens as well as the Aurors.
At the other end of the alley the two giants smashed several more shops before two squads of Aurors approached them. The first barraged of spells had no effect as the giants barely felt them as they continued on their destructive rampage. Finally the Aurors resorted to sending large chunks of demolished walls and buildings flying at the giants. As a large wooden beam struck one of the giants, the giant stumbled to his left and crashed through Flourish & Blott's. The second giant seeing his companion fall, picked up an enormous chunk of bricks that had fallen from Gringotts and heaved it at the Aurors who narrowly ducked out of it's way. The giant then grabbed his fellow giant by the shoulders and dragged him back toward the port key.
Back at the other end of the alley the Death Eaters continued to fire hexes wildly at anyone or anything they saw moving. Their attention was drawn back to the other end of the alley by a ground shaking crash as one of the giant's fell. A moment later the other giant was seen dragging his friend to the Port Key. Firing away more hexes, the Death Eaters retreated back to the Port Key with the giants and in another second, were gone.
As more and more members of the Ministry gathered in the alley the search and rescue mission began. Nearly every building in the alley had either been smashed or had taken damage in some form. Anxious parents and grandparents wandered about searching for children while lost youngsters cried for a familiar face. Hour after hour workers searched for missing people and helped the injured. As the hours passed, workers began to daunting task of cleaning and soon the hours turned to days, and days to weeks. It would be months before Diagon Alley would be open for business again.
During the chaos, dozens of Hogwarts students found themselves among the hundreds of injured. With St. Mungo's overflowing with injured, the Hospital Wing at Hogwarts was opened for students.
Among the fatalities were:
Karen Abbot - Mother of Hannah Abbot H7
Amelia Bones - Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement & Aunt of Susan Bones H6
