Friday August 19th - The early morning hour found many muggles heading off to their Universities for various tasks. The early morning quiet was shattered though as Death Eaters fell upon Cardiff University. Dozens of students and faculty were injured before the first team of Aurors appeared on scene. The Death Eaters quickly retreated with one of them turning into a rat, Officials are sure that he was Peter Pettigrew and Aurors identified another Death Eater as August Rookwood, the third was unidentified. As more Officials arrived on scene to deal with the injured and clear memories of this event a second attack occurred. This time the University of Portsmouth fell under attack, this one more vicious than the first. Several buildings were badly damaged by the time Aurors arrived on scene. One Death Eater was injured but was rescued by the others and they too quickly escaped. More Ministry Officials were called to Portsmouth to deal with the hundreds of victims and witnesses.
Less than 10 minutes later yet another attack was launched, this time at the University of Aberdeen. Witnesses in a local wizarding pub notified the Ministry within seconds of seeing Rodophus and Rabastan Lestrange as well as a woman believed to be Bellatrix Lestrange. Ministry Officials already spread thin at Cardiff and Portsmouth were forced to send what was left of the staff to Aberdeen as well as recall some Aurors from the other sites. Upon arriving in Aberdeen Officials found three of the universities buildings in flames, hundreds of injured muggles and three Death Eaters who quickly apparated away. At this time Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge sent out an all call to the wizarding community for anyone with any experience in healing magic to report to the scenes to help out.
An hour later the three scenes were still in total chaos when word of yet another attack reached the Ministry. In Liverpool a bridge near the university had somehow exploded and several buildings on the campus were in flames. More Aurors were removed from helping the injured and were sent to Liverpool where they saw the destruction and three Death Eaters quickly apparate away.
Minutes later a 5th attack on the University of Edinburgh was foiled by members of the Order of the Phoenix. Acting on tips, members of the Order set up in various parts around the Edinburgh campus and were able to capture Alecto Carrows and Amycus Carrows. A third Death Eater described as big and blond escaped capture.
All these attacks were apparently diversions for a jail break at Azkaban. Several Death Eaters as well as four giants stormed the defenses of Azkaban and freed Walden Macnair and Lucius Malfoy, both had been arrested a year ago. With all of the Ministry at the attack sites, very few Aurors were able to answer the call for help and the defenses were quickly over run. Azkaban itself was destroyed by the giants. It’s not certain what happened to the other prisoners in Azkaban and Officials are working to dig through the rubble to find them and take note of who else managed to escape in the chaos.
At the printing of this article, the Ministry reported that nearly 10,000 muggles were still at the universities as officials worked to alter their memory then escort them home and modify the memories of their families who would have expected them home sooner. When asked about the damage to the buildings and bridge, Cornelius Fudge had stated the cause would be put on “faulty electric wirings” for the buildings and “worn concrete” for the bridge.
To combat this latest Death Eater threat, Cornelius Fudge has issued a 5,000,000 Galleon reward to anyone with information as to the whereabouts of the Death Eaters. Fudge also announced his plan to hire and train 500 more Law Enforcement Agents by October. Many critics of this plan have pointed to the fact that the Ministry normally trains classes of 40 Agents at a time, and the training takes six weeks per class. "Yes we can train 500 new Agents" said Ferndules Rithgarn, a Law Enforcement trainer, "but how good will their training be? I honestly don't know what he (Fudge) is thinking. Being an agent requires a lot of training in dealing with people and problems, and then only about 10% of our Agents are skilled enough to move on to Auror training. We'll be putting 500 poorly training Agents out onto the street and asking them to stand up to Death Eaters. Well trained Aurors can hardly stand up to Death Eaters these days, only a fool would sign up for this..."
