September 1st Prophet Evening Standard – DEATH EATERS STRIKE ON HOGWARTS EXPRESS!
Death Eaters have struck once again, attacking the Hogwarts Express train, killing one girl aged 14 and injuring many more.
September 1st dawned early, fresh with dew adorning the grass stalks and leaves to make them glisten in the rising sun, a blanket of fluffy cloud to the west but the east a blue so bright it hurt your eyes to look at it, the vivid colour broken only by a few wispy stratus clouds. At King’s Cross Station, the hidden Platform 9 ¾ was bustling with adults in long cloaks, children and adults in normal (or, as in some cases, abnormal, as though they hadn’t paid much attention in Muggle Studies lessons) Muggle clothing. It didn’t feel quite normal though, because this year there was a tense atmosphere, with Aurors crowding the platform, some of them looking as though they didn’t quite know what to do amongst the schoolchildren they were supposed to be there to be guarding, and others looking as though they were itching to actually be doing something, instead settling for checking the identities of as many of the students boarding the train as they could, while Professors tried to restrain them from getting too carried away with their security measures, while all the time anxious themselves.
The Hogwarts Express had been underway for quite some time on its long journey from the station in London to Hogsmeade Station in Scotland, and some of the tension was starting to disperse a little when, without any warning save for five loud CRACKs, five Death Eaters Apparated straight onto the second to last carriage of the train. There were two Aurors standing guard in that carriage, as well as the Duelling and Muggle Studies Professor. One of the Aurors was murdered before he even had a chance to blink. The remaining Auror and Professor did their best to fend off the attacks of the Death Eaters and keep them occupied so that the students on the train were kept safe, but unfortunately not all students stayed in their compartments. Before Aurors from other parts of the train, many still blissfully unaware of what was going on further down the train, and extra help in the form of more experienced Aurors could arrive, one sixth year Slytherin had been cruelly hurt and blinded by one Death Eater and another fourth year Hufflepuff killed when she was unlucky enough to come across the scene.
With the arrival of old ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody himself and another experienced colleague, the tide started to turn in the Aurors’ favour. One Death Eater already lay stunned, and soon another was down and the remaining three Death Eaters decided that there was no more they could accomplish and it was time to retreat. They revived one of the Stunned Death Eaters and he escaped with them, but abandoned the other unconscious Death Eater who was quickly taken prisoner by the remaining Professors and Aurors. The cost of the Death Eaters’ visit already seemed enough, and Professor Foxcroft set about trying to take the badly injured Kris Graas to better medical facilities as others tried to take on board what had happened and calm worried students down as much as they could.
However, whilst Death Eaters had been causing havoc aboard the Hogwarts Express, giants in league with them had been diligently battering down the support pillars of a bridge over the River Tyne. The water levels were low due to the fact not much rain had fallen during the summer, the banks were steep near the bridge and there was a long fall down to the bottom. The bridge supports crumbled and fell down into the shallow river bottom as the last carriage was still on the bridge, and the rest of the bridge followed. The giants and a Death Eater apparently sighted who it is believed was controlling them escaped soon after. The last carriage did not fall straight into the river after it, which would have meant certain death for most of its occupants, but instead was dragged up onto land by the forward motion of the rest of the Hogwarts Express train, where it derailed, detached from the rest of the train and slid slowly down the river bank towards the bottom, causing yet more injuries but miraculously no fatalities.
This latest attack has left people stunned at wickedness they cannot begin to comprehend. Where Death Eaters are prepared to kill children, there can be no hope of any mercy or cease to their campaign of evil. A Ministry spokesman gave a brief statement this afternoon: “The Ministry is doing all it can to deal with the aftermath of this attack and to find out exactly who was behind it. In the meantime we urge the wizarding public to stay calm, and to follow the guidelines issued by the Ministry at all times. Our thoughts are with the families of those injured or killed in this latest atrocity.” The Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge has been as yet unavailable for comment, but critics have been quick to launch fresh calls for his resignation. One Jemima Greenhorn, an organiser of some of the recent protests near the Ministry building, said today, “This attack today only shows the weakness of the current Ministry – Death Eaters should never have been allowed to attack our children. Cornelius Fudge and his Wizengamot are simply not up to the job of keeping our country safe, and more needs to be done. The tragedy today was appalling and my sympathy and that of my colleagues is with the families of the victims of this attack.”
A help service has been set up for people anxious about their relatives – owl Ebenezer Hartley at the Office of Enquiries and Complaints.
