Plot Summary:
Esmeralda Mendez started out with the perfect life. She grew up with her mother and father in a village in Cuba, where she went to a Christian school and had a blast with her family. Esmeralda, who was only four at the time, had no idea of what was really happening in Cuba at the time though. Her Christian school was being shut down, and she didn’t even know why. Little Ezzie (her friends had nicknamed her Ezzie by this time) was already being forced into thinking that Fidel Castro was the new god, just as all her other friends were. Her parents, who were strong Christians did not like the way things were run in Cuba and began trying to find a way to escape the country. Esteban, Ezzie’s father, was already being called by the communist government to fight for his country. Finally, the Mendez’s found there answer…but at the cost of their nine year old daughter’s health. Ezzie had become deathly sick, and the Cuban doctors had no idea what was causing her ongoing breathing problems. The Mendez’s were sent to England, and as soon as the doctors had solved the problem, they escaped the hospital and ran. They were to head to Spain. At least people knew Spanish in Spain. It was hard for a family of three to get around England without knowing the language. Sadly, the Mendez’s never made it to Spain…with Ezzie that is. After two full years of living off the very little land England had left, the family received word of a school called Hogwarts. They found out their daughter was a witch, and did what they thought they would never do in their lives. They tried to drown Ezzie, just to get the “evil spirit” out of her. They ran from the scene of the crime, and even though Ezzie made it out alive, she would never see her parents again…or so she thought.
Ezzie managed well without her parents. She found a job at a local hotel for the summer and she slept in a children’s homeless shelter when she was through working. She only just scraped enough money to pay for her school things, not to mention all the loans she now had to pay off. Ezzie didn’t care though. She loved Hogwarts too much to stop going. Her love for her school carried her through almost three years, until the day when she met Ethan Jacobs. Ethan Jacobs was rich, famous, and extremely flirty. Ezzie fell head over heels in love with Ethan very quickly and after an incident when Ezzie was almost kidnapped while singing on the streets for a little extra money, she moved in with him and his parents. While she was there, Ethan’s mother Amanda picked up on Ezzie’s amazing voice. Amanda was a famous fashion designer, so let’s just say she had friends in high places. In a matter of weeks, Ezzie was famous, and in the middle of her very first album. Things are going great for Ezzie until the pressure of being famous starts to make Ezzie crack. With so many eyes watching her, she felt pressured to keep the image of perfection, resulting in Ezzie turning into a bulimic. She breaks up with Ethan and bitterly regrets it later when she sees him getting together with a certain Amber Hess.
With so much going on in Ezzie's new life, how could she ever think back on the past? Ezzie had always thought that with so much going on in her life, it would be impossible to squeeze anymore drama into her life. But boy, was Ezzie wrong. Would the reappearance of her long lost mother and the sudden realization that Ezzie now has an adoptive sister be considered drama? You decide.
