Sapphire bent down to put her book on the floor as the teacher began to speak. She sounded quite confident, especially for such a young teacher. Sapphire wasn't sure how confident she'd be if she had the job Professor Nikolaeva had; people said it was cursed. Sapphire didn't believe such nonsense as that, but it was true that the people who took the job seemed to have extrodinarily bad luck. Maybe Dumbledore just never made the right choice.
Sapphire listened to the question. She thought about it for a moment and came up with the answer, her hand up in the air, but Brett was already speaking beside her. Sapphire put her hand down and looked sideways at him, her eyebrows raised.

Kiyla smiled at Bretts response. She turned and saw a Ravenclaw and their eyes locked. They made eye contact for a few seconds, as if having a small conversation unconsiously, then Kiyla looked away quickly.
"Nonsense? You seemed really focused on that 'nonsense." Kiyla said with a teasing tone. She glanced at the Ravenclaw again but she was reading her book.
'Weird,' Kiyla thought to herself. She looked up as the Professer began speaking. She didn't even have the chance to get up and grab her things.
Kiyla listened as Brett answered the question without waiting to get called on. She raised an eyebrow at him then shurgged it off. She didn't know the answer anyway, so it didn't really matter to her. She just hoped Brett didn't get in trouble, though she doubted it.
She sighed and pulled out her wand form inside her cloak and whispered, "Accio bag." Her game came to her quietly and quickly. She hoped that teacher hadn't noticed. She wondered if she herself would get in trouble. She put her bad beside her chair and looked up at the Professor once more.

Yelena looked around, two students had their hands raised, but another had already revealed the answer, she turned to the boy who had just blurted out the answer to her question; she smiled, “Well done Mr. Thompson, but next time wait till I call on you before you give the answer.” She did not think she would have to have added that part to her intro. “That is right, muggles call them El Chupacabras, or goat sucker, but we in the wizarding world call them Alderglix,” she waved her wand and the name appeared beneath the creature. Yelena noticed a girl moving her bag with her wand, but said nothing, it was not a big deal besides as long as she paid attention and learned something she was not too bothered, unless she disturbed the class.
“Mr. Thompson has already given you what the creature feeds on and that it sucks blood, but can anyone tell me exactly how it kills its prey, and where you can find one?” she looked around for raised hands.

Sapphire looked over as the girl sat down and gave her a quick smile. She hadn't meant to be unfriendly.
Then Sapphire concentrated on the teacher's question. She thought for a moment, and then, fairly sure that she knew the answer, raised her hand in the air.

"I'm Kelsey," Kelsey said to Ivy and then walked over to an empty desk, sat and sighed with relief. She was suddenly sort of tired and waited for class to begin.
And sure enough it did! The class started with some strange pictures on the board and a few questions. Kelsey would have answered, she just didn't have any enthusiasm anymore. she sighed as Sapphire raised her hand. Kelsey didn't bother raising her hand, Sapphire usually had the right answer anyway. She smiled feeling content and took out a piece of parchment. Doodling was Kelsey's favorite past time.

Ivy turned round sharply as Kiyla's bag moved next to Brett. She raised her eyebrows at Kiyla and gave her an amused smile, before turning quickly round to face the teacher. She had been slightly surprised by Kiyla's moving, but she understood it.
Ivy started to search her brain for anything she could think of to do with El Chupacabras. The name rung a faint bell, and she remembered something she'd read about it in passing. She put her hand up, it wavering in the air slightly, hoping to be able to volunteer something useful.

Savannah shot that Hufflepuff boy daggers and shook her head, the whole second chance thing was not acceptable to her. By the time you are a 5th year you SHOULD know basic classroom rules. The next question was how the creature gets it food, Savannah knew what the muggles thought from that TV show, though she had in fact deglected to read up on the creature before class. She could always have asked Catalina but she wasn't in this class for some reason today. So Savannah again raised her hand and she rolled her wand in her other hand, daring someone to blurt out an answer once more.

Yelena was pleased, a few more students had raised their hands this time and no one had blurted out the answer. She called on the first girl to raise her hand, “Yes, Miss Phoenix, you have an answer for us.”

Sapphire smiled as the teacher called on her. She liked to answer questions.
"Well," she started, "it kills its prey by making a single puncture hole and then draining all the blood out of it's victim. You can find it in Latin America, and it's become famous among the Muggles in Puerto Rico, where it is known as 'the Goatsucker."
Sapphire stopped there; that was as far as the knowledge that she was sure about went, and looked down at the empty piece of parchment on the desk in front of her.

Yelena listened as Sapphire gave her answer; when she was finished Yelena gave a smile of approval. “You just earned your house ten points Miss. Phoenix. The Alderglix is usually found with one long fang which it uses to puncture the neck or closest blood vessel of its prey, but, there have been reports of some with two.” She walked around the class very dignified, “There is only one spell that works on this creature and it is Oblivitum Destructus, said with a slight flick of the wrist.” Yelena showed them what she meant, “Now practice this and if done correctly a vibrant blue light will shoot from your wand.” She began to walk towards the front of the class, “Oh, students after your done. I will show you an Alderglix in the flesh.”

Ivy put her hand down as a Ravenclaw girl answered the Professor. She listened carefully as Professor Nikolaeva explained the spell they would be doing. That was all right, although she wasn't particularly keen on meeting one of these things.
Ivy whispered the words to herself a couple of times and cast a nervous glance at Jordan. She then picked up her wand and said the words.
"Oblitum Destructus." Nothing happened. Hmm. Ivy said the words over to herself again, and realised her mistake.
"Oblivitum Destructus," Ivy said, not overdoing the wrist movement. A faint blue light came from the end of her wand. Hardly vibrant.
"Oblivitum Destructus." Ivy said again, this time the wrist movement slightly more pronounced, and the words said more strongly. A stream of surprisingly bright blue light issued from her wand.
Ivy smiled, pleased, and slightly astonished that she had managed to succeed with relatively minimal effort.

Sapphire smiled in satisfaction as she earned ten points for her house, and continued to listen to the teacher. They were going to be doing some practical work. Well, they might as well. And then they were going to see the creature itself. Sapphire thought back to last years lessons and reflected on just how much the standard of teaching seemed to have improved. Finally, maybe, they had someone who knew what she was doing.
Sapphire repeated the words to herself in her head before saying them.
"Oblivitum Destructus," Sapphire said. Nothing happened. Irritated, Sapphire tried again. Still nothing happened. Sapphire frowned.
Sapphire forced herself to concentrate. "Oblivitum Destructus!" she said, making sure that she relaxed her wrist to complete the movement (not for nothing was she a viola player) and this time a bright blue light shot from the end of her wand.
Sapphire smiled in satisfaction and stood there looking absent-mindedly at the light her wand was emitting.

Jordan pulled out her wand. Ready for some action. She smiled at herself, and practically yelled,
"Oblivitum Destructus!" The blue light shone on her wand and her mind was happy. BUt as soon as it happened, it stopped. Jordan sat back with a huff and banged her wand against the desk.
"Oblivitum Destructus," She said again, this time the light stayed for a good 3 minutes before she flicked it and it went out.

Savannah sighed and rolled her eyes as the class went on. She wasn't going to be called on so she just stopped bothering to raise her hand. They soon reached the practical part of the class where they would have to practice a spell which was the only way to defeat these goat sucker things. Watching in half interest, Savannah mimicked the Professor's wand movement while reciting the spell to herself in her head. If done right it should produced a blue glow, "got it" Savannah muttered to herself as she shot Julie a sideways glance to see what she was up to.
Picking up her wand Savannah repeated the wand motion, "Oblivitum Destructus!" she said in a calm voice and felt the firm vibration of her wand. Repeating the motion and "Oblivitum Destructus" several more times, Savannah each time felt a different vibration from her wand, some were strong whereas others were barely noticeable. Sighing in digest she beat herself up mentally, "focus! Just get it done with already!" She told herself in her mind. A few more tries produced stronger vibrations and blue sparks. Looking about the room there were shimmers of blue like here and there as others were slowly getting the spell down. "Oblivitum Destructus!" Savannah said in an annoyed tone which produced a strong vibration and a small jet of blue light which lasted only a brief moment then faded away, it was a start but it was doubtful something that weak would drive off a Chubacabra thing. It wasn't much use today though, Savannah's head was just not focused enough on her class to get this spell mastered. Setting her wand down she watched Julie work for a while.

Post by Kim Sullivan H4 on Nov 21, 2004 5:37:28 GMT
Kim sat quietly through most of the class since she'd lost so many points in potions for talking. She wanted to do her best for the new teacher so maybe she'd wouldn't get in as much trouble in this class as she usually did. They were studying the Chubacabra! That was a cool monster and it had a really funny name, it sounded almost like those chalupas! Kim liked those and she made a mental note that when she went home next she had to go and get some of those for lunch one day. Of course she also wanted to get some cheeseburgers too, those were super good and for some reason she hardly ever got them at Hogwarts. While Kim made her lunch menu in her mind for when she returned home, the class continued all around and she was oblivious to what was going on.
Suddenly a blue flash of light caught her eye and she looked around, everyone had their wands out and were saying something like Obivitud Destructoructicus. Grabbing her own wand, Kim looked to her left at Savannah and Julie, they were both working. Kim watched them for a while and imitated the way they both moved their wands. "Obivitud Destructoructicus" Kim said. Her wand did nothing however. Perhaps her wand wasn't ready yet, it happened a lot of course to her wand. Shaking her wand feverishly about on her desk Kim tried to get it warmed up when she saw the professor walking towards her.
"Hi Professor!" Kim said as the professor stopped next to her. "This spell is kind of hard I don't think my wand is ready to work yet so I have to warm it up" she said while shaking her wand some more sending out a few sparks. "Hey professor you know those Chupacabra guys? They are monster but I wanted to know if you ever watch that TV show X-files!? I watch it all the time at home it's like super cool! These FBI agents are always getting these cases and they have to go and like find these monsters and then sometimes they have to find aliens. This one show I was watching was really scary because the alien thingy was like really big and it looked like it was hairy and a really ugly monster but then they never showed it up close they just showed it really far away and always in the dark so it was shadowy. My brother told me it wasn't a real monster it was just a trick to make people scared but have you ever heard of the New Jersey Devil? It was really scary and it lives in the New Jersey jungle I think or something, it looked like a swamp. So anyway they went down into the sewers and they found the monster and the one guy shot the monster I think but then the monster wasn't there after he got shot and it was like magic! Pretty cool huh!?" Kim said as she smiled happily at the professor.

Yelena heard Kim speak to her, “It is not as hard as you may think Miss Sullivan.” Yelena smiled as Kim rattled on, “I am afraid I have never watched the X-Files, but you have good insight Miss Sullivan.” Yelena spoke to the class, “That’s enough students, only Miss Sullivan is yet to complete the task. Please take your homework down. I want you to write a paragraph on the Alderglix, covering where is can be found, what it hunts and how it kills. Points will be awarded of course.”
She stepped into a cleared area of the room, she flicked her wand and a covered cage appeared. A hissing sound came from under the blanket. “As I promised you…the Alderglix!” with a quick movement of her hand she pulled away the sheet, and there in the cage stood an Alderglix, hissing at them venomously. Its claws were bared and its single fang exposed. “I want you to study this creature carefully, the major cause for people, wizards being killed is that they are so taken by the Alderglix’s appearance that they freeze or forget the spell. We would not want that to happen to you.”
“I want you to look at the creature and then cast the charm once more, and see if it works as well when you have the animal before you.” She stood erect, “Now do not, I repeat do not cast the charm at the animal, this one is very special and must be preserved,” she said with a curious tone to her voice.
((The homework is due by Monday the 6th of December. IM them to me. You can post your character’s reaction and then the class is dismissed.))

Ivy's eyes widened as she saw the hideous creature. Lovely. Very pleasant. Just the thing she wanted to see before her dinner.
Ivy looked at the creature and pointed her wand in a different direction, away from anyone else. She sighed slightly and thought 'well, it's in a cage'.
"Oblivitum Destructus!" Ivy said firmly. A bright blue light shot from her wand. Ivy harrumphed, happy. Although she wasn't sure how she'd cope if the creature wasn't in the cage. She doubted she'd be very good at defending herself then.
Ivy packed away her things and walked away from the classroom, eager to get something to eat. A hard day of lessons had made her tired and hungry.
