Post by Professor Binns on Feb 20, 2005 4:35:02 GMT
Drifting through the walls from one classroom to another Professor Binns made his way to his own. Coming through one final chalkboard he stopped in front of his desk and looked around. The room was rather plain with the only decorations on the walls being rows upon rows of reference books. There were also three rows of desk made for three people each to sit at comfortably during the lesson. He smiled remembering when he was a boy at Hogwarts sitting in those seats; learning all about Trolls and Goblin rebellions.
Finally taking his seat Professor Binns toke out a pearly white wand, a ghost like himself. Pointing it at one of the shelves Professor Binns summoned the textbook to himself. Slightly inconvenienced by his lack of ability to use his hands he used magic to flip to page 63. The chalk then lifted itself and copied what was on the page onto the blackboard.
“The Great Merlin” the title read. Muttering to himself Binns read through the page. “Merlin, thought to be the greatest wizard of all time by muggles, was in fact an important character in our history as well. He successfully crossed the line between the muggle and magical worlds and left a lasting affect on both.” All of a sudden he realised how loud the class had grown around him and looked up at the clock. Noticing it was time for class to begin Professor Binns directed his attention in the general vicinity of the student. “Sit down class, sit down. Today we will begin our study on Merlin. Can anyone tell me why he is so important?” He said to them.

Sapphire smiled as she made her way down to History of Magic. Despite the fact that many people found it boring, she found it fascinating. Professor Binns was perhaps not the most inspiring teacher, but Sapphire found herself able to easily overcome that. She did a lot of extra reading in this subject, because she found that that helped her get more out of the lessons. So she was coming to History of Magic fairly early, to get a good seat near the front where she wouldn't be too distracted by the antics of her fellow, bored students.
Sapphire took a seat on the second row, to the side, where she could easily see the board, and took out her notebook, leather bound, before copying down what was on the board. The noise level grew steadily until it was almost unbearable. Sapphire doubted that Professor Binns could hear it to the extent she could - he probably had an almost entirely different hearing range than the human inhabitants of the classroom. Sapphire sighed, but smiled as Professor Binns spoke, allieviating the noise somewhat. She put her hand up to answer his question. She had read books on Merlin in her second year. She had a strange favourite subject, but at least it meant she was able to get the books. Hardly anyone else would want to borrow them.

Cass ran into History of Magic. She wouldn't admit this to anyone, but this was her favoriate class. History had always fascinated from the the blunderous mistakes to the things that made people great. However, she wasn't to fond of Mr. Binns. All her teachers in muggle schools had at least gotten the subject matter interesting enough, but Mr. Binns just sort of droning on. And since Binns was a ghost and history himself, it was history teaching history. She thought it would be wonderful to hear what he had lived through. He might even get excited about it.
Cass sat down in her seat as soon as she saw him transfer the information from the book to the board. Merlin, huh? She said.
Cassandra's hand shot up and she blurted out the answer in her excitement of knowing it,
"Merlin is also called Myrrdin. It was Merlin who arranged the test of the sword and stone as a test to determine who would replace the dead king. The Stone represented Christanity and the Sword, Justice. Only Arthur could remove it every time. He would replace it for other challengers to try, but this made Author the undisputed King of England. Merlin was always involved with King Arthur. Merlin also created the round table for Uther Pendragon. He also played a major role in the mysteries of the Grail. He also was a major motivator for the Lady of Lake at the Fountain of Barenton to give King Aurthor his magical sword, Excalibur, which made him Invinciable in his battles of Good against Evil."
Cassandra shut up rather quickly. The stories of Merlin and author had always fascinated her as a child. That was why she was able to spout of what she said so quickly. She felt every eye in the room turn towards her.She suddenly became very shy and quiet.

Kris stretched after having spent a couple of hours practicing both spell-work and martial arts in the Forbidden Forest. It was near the edge of the Forest, but still in it. Even though going to the Forest was punishable, Kris went there 3-4 times a week, no matter how severly or often he was punished for it. Then again – he did have an invisibility cloak and knew the Forest well enough to not get caught most of the time. And he wasn’t afraid of the animals there either.
Glancing at his watch, Kris noticed that class would start in just a moment. History of Magic – an intriguing subject, if not taught by Binns. Being a part of an old pure-blooded family with two very smart and influential wizards, Kris had been forced to learn the subject before, so he wasn’t really bad at it. But he was bored to death by Binns.
Taking his bag from where he had left it, Kris moved towards the castle and entered it just in time to see Cassandra – third year Gryffindor, Kris had exchanged a couple of words with, burst out an answer. Merlin, Kris read the topic from the black-board as he made his way towards the front of the class, without even bothering to apologize for being late. “However Merlin was a fool. When asked to bring the ‘purest of hearts’ he made the wrong decision and brought back Lancelot, when he should have chosen Galahad. A sign of absolutely no common sense,” Kris’s voice was calm, but almost challenging just like his eyes which he locked with professor Binns, “And he was imprisoned with his own wisdom. The Lady of the Lake sapped his power and plundered his secret knowledge and when it was done she bound him in stone by his own spells.”<br> Kris had been talking while he was moving and now he sat down, reaching the second desk from front that was placed under the window. Transfiguring his quill into a pillow, Kris smirked. Deciding to amuse Mary, if she would come to the lesson, he changed it’s shape to be a teddy-bear and placing it under his head, leaned back and closed his eyes, while crossing his arms over his chest waiting to see Binns response.

Kari made her way down toward History of Magic. She knew she would enjoy this class. She always enjoyed reading the many books her mom had about Magical History. She sat down near Cass, and listened to her answer the question Professor Binns asked. Kari smiled at Cass. She obviously knew the myths and legends about King Arthur.

“Peter, Peter pumpkin eater had a wife and couldn’t keep her. So her put her in a pumpkin shell and there she stayed very well.” Lenora sang to herself while walking down the halls toward the Great Hall for breakfast. She was not displeased that today was History of Magic but she wasn’t screaming it from the rooftops either. She walked over to the Gryffindor table where she made small talk with her fellow Gryffies and ate some toast with jam. She left them early though not wanting to be late. “All I can say is that my life is pretty plain you don't like my point of view you think that I'm insane.” She sang as she walked into the classroom.
Her mood was suddenly mellowed by the blandness of the area and she made her way quietly up the rows of seats. She noticed another fourth year there who she recognized as Sapphire from Ravenclaw. “Good morning” Lenora said as she slipped into the middle seat beside her. She then removed her textbook and flipped to the page indicated. Lenora leaned back in her chair and threw her head back silently continuing the song in her head. She listened to the chatter of the other students for a moment before sitting up properly and tapping her foot on the floor. If there was anything Lenora hated it was boredom and she often went to great lengths to make things interesting.

Nasser entered the History of Magic just as class was about to begin having waited to the last possible minute to enter the class. Nasser was one who didn’t give up easily, but History of Magic… for once this was something he should have admitted to himself he just couldn’t do, but he wouldn't. He still wanted to try and deluded himself into believing he was going to pass his OWL in June. Nasser almost sat at the back of the class and then convinced himself to sit in the third row instead, as he did so he read the single word on the board, Merlin. So that was the topic of their discussion today. Great… like it made much difference to him what they were going to learn in any case.
Nasser put his head on his arms. It had been a long day… NO! He was not going to give in to that drowsy feeling he got whenever he was in this class. He leaned back in his chair forcing himself to stay awake. He listened to the students answer the question, fully aware that he didn’t know anything of what they had just said. But at least he was listening as it wasn't the professor doing the talking. He tried to take notes, but instead decided to just listen as they were talking too fast for that. He hoped he would be able to retain some of the information they were giving him right now. It was certainly an interesting story, but Nasser was just terrible at the subject.

Amelia entered class early. Which was a surprise as usually Amelia was always late... or near to be late. She took a seat in the middle row and sighed as she took out her book. She let it sit there and sighed without opening it. She looked about the room as she always did when she first entered a class. She noticed Cassandra was there, she smiled and quickly stood grabbing her things. She made her way over to Cassandra and sat down next to her, letting her books fall onto the desk in front of her.
"Hello!" she smiled at Cassandra as she picked up her quills from the floor.

Kari, almost entirely sure that she would fall asleep in this class whil Binns droned on, took out her wand, and, holding ti under her desk and pointed at her eyes, performed a spell to keep them open. She really wanted to stay awake, since it was the first class of the new year.
All right, I will NOT fall asleep, she reprimanded herself, because it would be really wierd if she fell asleep with her eyes open. She looked toward Professor Binns, and pulled out her quill, ink bottle, and a notebook. She wrote down the title of today's lesson, and groaned when her quill broke.
"And it was brand new, too. I had to blow the remains of my money on school supplies," she muttered, then thought that candy wasn't really school supplies. She pulled out a sugar quill and began to suck on it, leaning back in her chair, and pulling out a Quick Quotes quill, setting it to copy down whatever was said in class.

Post by Mary Evans on Feb 21, 2005 2:03:04 GMT
Mary sat at the Slytherin table fully dressed in her uniform proud that she had enough time to eat breakfast before class. She sat there chatting for a minute or two before she realised breakfast was such a rare occurrence she wasn’t even hungry. She nibbled on some grapes anyways while flipping through her History of Magic textbook. She sat there reading as the Great Hall cleared. Looking around Mary noticed there were only a few students left and glanced up at the clock. Class was about to start any second but it was History of Magic so Mary calmly put her book back in her bag and walked down the halls toward the classroom.
She walked through the door in time to see Kris slip into a seat while chattering away to Binns who didn’t seem to notice. As she walked up the isle she broke out in hysterical laugher as Krissy Bear turned his quill into a teddy bear. Ignoring any curios glances that may have been thrown her way Mary sat down next to Kris and quelled her laughter as she took out her book.
Looking at the board she saw they were studying Merlin and smiled. Apparently Binns had asked a question while she wasn’t there so Mary put up her hand anyways knowing should she be picked someone would help her catch up and considering it was Merlin she would of course know the answer.

Maria entered History of Magic class and looked around for a seat. This year she was taking the course to learn more about magic in history. It seemed to be fascinate her and she loved to spice up her shudel each year. Noticing that only one person she knew was in the room and decied to sit next to him. Setting down her books on the table and her bag on the flour she sat down in the chair and looked at Nasser who seemed to try to keep himself awake. Turning her head to the right slightly she smiled at him and took out a piece of parchment and ink tray along with a quil out and placed it beofre her.
After she was all settled she glanced up at Professor Binns as he asked a question on Merlin. Raising her hand she noticed that one girl blurted out the answer. Mia sighed and picked up her quill ready to begin her note taking. Tucking some brown hair behind her ears she looked up at the Professor again and waited patiently for his response to the answers that were being blurted out. Mia didn't know much about Merlin, since she lived in the muggle world. Even know muggles had a quite differnt precation on how they thought of the sourcer. But Merlin was only famous wizard she knew next to Dumbledore.

Pyro groaned as he sat in his dorm and looked down at his schedule. History of Magic. there was bore. just sitting there listening to that dumb ghost go on and on. He contemplated skipping the class. But than again mary had threatened him with a thousand tortures if he didnt go. Maybe he should act sick. that way he would have an excuse.
With a disgusted groan he jumped off his bed and grabed his books and made his way toward the classroom. "curse you mary...." He muttered under his breath as he found the classroom. he entered the classroom just as Binns was about to start the class. It seemed his indecision had cost him some time. He quickly sidled up to the table where Mary and Kris were sitting and took a seat next to them.
"Hope your happy. I decided to show up just for you......" he whispered sarcasticly to mary out of the corner of his mouth as he pulled out his text book

Dana had been too absorbed in a book to notice the time, so she had to skip breakfast in order to make it to class in time. Recalling that she had history of Magic first Dana stopped by the kitchens quickly and grabbed an apple along. Reaching the class-room almost on time Dana slipped in and glanced around the classroom. Seeing Mary, Kris and Pyro all sitting in one line, where was still more for one more person, Dana groaned in her mind and moved to the front of the class where they were all sitting and nudging Kris to move a little sat down next to Kris.
“First I get dared to proclaim my ‘undying’ love to Snape in the middle of a crowded hallway, now I hang out with three SLytherins – I am starting to get a weird reputation you know. Some first year Hufflepuff avoided me this morning,” Dana whispered to the other three with a cheeky grin – she wasn’t really disturbed by this. Kris and Mary were like sister and brother and Pyro was some-what of a friend to. At least for Dana. SO if people judged before getting to know them, then that was their loss. Dana wouldn’t change her friends.
Pulling out her book and a notebook Dana glanced at the black-board and saw the name Merlin there. ‘At least the topic should be interesting’ Dana thought. She had also been forced to learn History of Magic rather thoroughly, so she was good in the subject without much effort. Biting into the apple she had brought along Dana ignored some of the curious glances sent her way and waited for the professor to start drowning on an on, so she could either get to sleep , chat with the others or do something useful. “Nice pillow by the way, Krissy Bear, really suits your personality,” Dana whispered to the others while sending a wink towards Mary – Mary had mentioned her nick-name for Kris and this was the perfect opportunity to use it as well, before Dana turned her attention back to Binns for hte beginning of the class. At least some of her attention.

Today was History and Magic and Jasmine couldn’t wait. She was very much into the history in the wizarding world. Since she grew up in the muggle world her real mother never told her about Hogwarts. But that was before she went to the orphanage and than was adopted by Lana. But Kelly Anderson did not seem to like the fact she was a witch and hid her ability from the world, and her daughter whom she knew was going to go to Hogwarts sooner or later. But Jasmine did not want to think her old family but her classes right now. You could say she was a work haul but she just wanted things to be prefect. It was just her nature to make sure everything was spick and tidy and her home work done. Most of her friends called her a goody two shoes but she didn’t care. Only towards Vanessa well she ever is herself. Behind all these studies laid a soul that could not break free from its cage.
After entering History of Magic she looked around for some one she might now. In the third were Maria Fleming and Nasser Salah. But she didn’t know where to sit. Seeing Sapphire had been at a table and was already full she just decided to sit next to Maria. The older girl wouldn’t mind, or at least she hoped she didn't. Sitting down in her chair she looked at the golden brown hair girl silting next to her and smiled up at her and than looked up forward up at Professor Binns. He was asking a question on Merlin, one of the greasiest sources of the wizarding time, well next to Dumbledore. Raising her hand she noticed people blurted out the answer and decided to just wait for the Professors reactions, even know the answer sounded correct to her.

Jordan didn't mind HoM, but it wasn't exactly her favorite class either. She attended the class, why, she did not know. But, she did. And she was there now, so she couldn't leave. Though she doubted Professor Binns would notice. She sat in her seat, her headphones on, and the music playing softly. It was either music, or Merlin. Though she was fascinated by Merlin, she liked music better. Her foot was tapping underneath the table, and she couldn't help but, smile. When everyone else started pouring into the class, Jordan took off her headphones and put them away, ready for class. While people blurted out answers for Merlin, Jordan listened while taking few notes. HoM was one of hte classes Jordan did well in, very well. It was just a lot of memorization, something Jordan was very good at.
Jordan nodded as the conclusion was drawn, and she agreed with the answer. Looking out the corner of her eye at her piece of green hair, she grabbed it, and twirled it around her finger, feeling rather bored. HoM did that to her, actually it did it to a lot of people. She knew it would do the same to Katie Davenport if the girl was still at Hogwarts, though she wasn't. Which was sad. Jordan sighed and stopped twirling the piece of hair around her index finger, watched it uncurl and bounce back into place. Looking around the class she spotted a few of her friends, gave them a nod and a smile, then returned to paying attention to Professor Binns.

Merlin, sage from another world, was an inspired seer and mystic mage, a wise councillor and faithful friend to three kings. But for all his wisdom, was bewitched by the Lady of the Lake who turned his love to her own ends. She sapped his power and plundered his store of secrete knowledge, and when done, she bound him in stone by his own spells.
Merlin, sometimes Myrddin, was the famous wizard in Arthurian mythology. So powerful was his magic that one medieval tradition credits him with the magical construction of the Stonehenge. Another of his works, was supposed to be King Arthur's Round Table. Enchanter, prophet, and wizard who oversees Arthur's conception and birth, enables his ascension and acts as high councel to the King in the early phase of his reign. Geoffrey of Monmouth is responsible for the Merlin known to literature today. His name, "Merlinus," is a latinized adaptation of the Welsh "Myrddin" - the name of a late sixth century northern bard reported to have the gift of sight who predicted a Celtic uprising. A series of Prophetiae Merlini were written by Geoffrey first and then incorporated into the Historia Regum Britanniae, where he attempts to give weight to his semi-historical character. Elina recalled a few facts of Merlin that she had read about in a few books and scrolls. It was an interesting topic that she literally adored. Elina was always interested in Merlin and King Arthur. It was just something that made her joyful and ready to learn more about. She was quite happy that Professor Binns had decided this topic for class today.
Raising her hand, rather slowly, she waited to be called on. She didn't know much about him in the wizarding world, but she knew plenty about how the wizard was adapted into the muggle world. She had read many stories about him, and many myths about him that she knew were false. It was just as plain as day. Why muggles believed that rubbish was a mystery to her, and she didn't see how good it would do if she was to try and explain the actual story. Elina had tried to explain to Ashley and her parents, the significance of the Merlin stories, but neither of them seemed interested; this hurt Elina. She wanted to share her knowledge, not hide it.

It's been a long long time since I've looked into the mirror, I guess that I was blind now my reflection getting clearer now that you're gone things will never be the same again. There's not a minute that goes by every hour of every day your such a part of me but I just pulled away well I am not the same girl you used to know, I wish I said the words I never showed. Vanessa's handwriting swirled over the paper, not relaly paying any attention to Binns. She didn't care for History of Magic. It was a boring class, but it was an easy A. You sit there, pretend to listen, and then look up all the stuff before the test. Simple. Vanessa knew better though, she would do the homework, but paying attention in class was something that she didn't do often.
Merlin wasn't her thing, so when she heard that Merlin was what they were going to discuss in class, she immediately got into song writing mode. Her ink was nearly gone from all the songs she had written so far, and made a mental note to stock up before semester exams. Her eyes glanced up at Binns once and awhile, then went back to her parchment, moving on to the next song. She didn't expect to be called on, if she was, no big. She knew enough about Merlin that she could just say a fact and be done with it.

Caiest glanced at her watch and noted that class started in four minutes. Getting up from where she'd been sitting in her common room she gathered up her things and headed out.
Caiest was actually going to class today. Normally she wouldn't go to class unless there was going to be a quiz or something as class generally bored her and she knew enough of the material that she didn't have to attend classes much. The only reason she was going today was that she had nothing better to do.
Walking into the class Caiest chose a seat away from everyone and sat down. Looking at the board she noted that they were to be studying Merlin. That was good she'd read extensive amounts of books on the guy he was really very facinating. At least now she didn't actually have to listen in class.
Caiest dug through her bag till she found a piece of gum. Popping it into her mouth she pulled out her quill and ink as well as some parchment and began doodling waiting for the class to be over.

As soon as the question was asked the class quieted down for the most part except one girl who began rambling and a boy who walked in talking. Binns ignored them both and looked around. He noticed a few raised hands; the first up had belonged to a girl from Ravenclaw with black hair. “Yes Miss… you”, he said pointing at her ((Sapphire)) “why do you believe Merlin is so important in magical history?”

Katie had arrived to History of Magic with plenty of time before the class was set to begin, just like she was with all of her classes. She had never been late to class in her life, and she never intended to. Katie had taken a seat in the very middle of the front row. From there she could see the board perfectly and hear as clearly as possible Professor Binns' lecture. She pulled out her history book, some parchment, a quill, and a pot of ink and placed them on her desk. Each of course had to be set in its proper place: the parchment right in front of her, the book opened to the proper page behind the parchment, the quill to the left of her parchment, and the pot of ink just outside of the quill. Once everything was in it's perfect place she felt ready to begin. Katie wrote her name in the top left corner of the parchment and the date right underneath. Then in the upper right corner she wrote "History of Magic" and underneath that "page 63". Katie then proceeded to the center near the top where she wrote in the title, "The Great Merlin".
The young girl smiled contently at her paper feeling very organized and in control. She placed her quill back in it's place and stretched her left hand, preparing it for much writing on the wizard, Merlin. Katie watched as several others entered the classroom. First was a Ravenclaw she didn't know. Then two Gryffindors who she didn't know came in followed by Lenora, two more Gryffindors that she didn't know and a Slytherin whom she didn't know either. After them came Maria and yet a Slytherin she didn't know. Following him came Dana, a Ravenclaw, Jordan, Elina, Vanessa, and another Ravenclaw. As the class grew louder Professor Binns finally decided to start the class. Katie copied down the information from the board and was about to raise her hand to answer the professor's question when she her attention was turned to a girl blurting out information on Merlin. She honestly must have no respect whatsoever for others in the class that could have known the answer as well. Then a boy walked into class late and started spouting off at the mouth as well. What was wrong with these children? Did they have any manners at all? Disheartened by both acts of rudeness, Katie kept her hand in her lap and decided to answer the next question the professor threw at them.
