Post by Professor Julius Foxcroft on May 1, 2005 23:14:51 GMT
Julius Foxcroft's blue eyes had darkened to a dark misty grey as he walked from his office to the Muggle Studies classroom, his light footsteps as he walked on the wooden floor echoing loudly in the empty corridor. He was, as usual, early for class, and as he had expected the class was empty as he walked over to his desk, stood in front of it his legs extended in front him and crossed at the ankle. He was leaning his weight on his hands, his back barely touching the desk as he put the notes he had in his hands for today's class on his desk and then started thumbing busily through the evening edition of the Daily Prophet.
He waited for the students to come into class thinking they would probably be in a mood very similar to the one he was in himself. Exams were coming up, the wizarding world was getting darker and darker after all the tragic events of the year, and everyday there was news of Death Eater sightings but never Today's class was going to be his attempt at cheering them up a little, and he was going to try to be a little more lenient than he usually was if he could manage that. He doubted it as he usually found he was much more sarcastic than he imagined and the image he projected was that of a strict elderly man somewhere in his forties when in fact Julius hadn’t even turned thirty. He was always smiling though when the first tudent came to class. And it wasn't a forced smile, it was one of genuine happiness, one that he no longer felt anywhere except when he was teaching.
((OOC NOTE: You may attend this class if you have not attended the one before it, just don't say in your post that this is your first class of MS. All years and houses can attend.))

Bee walked down the corridors, her feet thudding loudly on the floor. She looked around to make sure that she was in the right place. Muggle Studies was an interesting class, but she already knew a lot about the muggle world. After all she was a muggle born. She smiled to herself as she thought of all the stuff she was doing. She had just tried out for quidditch and she hoped that she would make the team. Bee was always trying out for different things, but this would be fun. She wanted to be a beater; she knew she would excel in that. She walked down another corridor; she was almost there. Charms was her favorite class, but she paid attention in all her other classes. She enjoyed listening to Professor Foxcroft teach. She hesitated at the door to the Muggle Studies classroom. She would be the first one there. She hated being the first one there; it made her feel uncomfortable sitting in a classroom with just her professor. She put on a cheerful face and opened the door. She looked at her professor and saw that he was looking at the Daily Prophet. Bee walked into the classroom and sat down in a chair in the second row. She smiled her professor and took out all of her needed books out of her bag. "Hi! How are you doing today Professor?" Bee asked in a friendly tone. She had forgotten about the uncomfortable feelings in her stomach; she didn't want to let on that she was feeling ucomfortable. She put her blonde hair in a pony tail so it wasn't in her green eyes if she had to read. She looked at the Professor, trying to guess what the lesson would be about today.

Cass left the common room in a bit of hurry, just like every morning for class. She liked to sleep in too late, but her lessons with McGonogall were keeping her up late at night. Luckily for her, it was only Muggle Studies. This should be a cake class for her since, after all, she was a muggle born. Dashing to class, she opened the door to find out that she had been the first to arrive. Apparently, she wasn't the last one to arrive as usual.
Flashing a smile and a wave at the Professor, she took a seat in the middle of the room. She dropped her book bag and began to rummage through it, looking for her transfiguration book. She plopped it open on her desk and decided to get some studying done before class began.

Bee saw Cass come in and sit down in the middle of the classroom. She sent a grin over to Cass and then looked at her books. She checked to make sure everything was there. She had gotten here early and Bee wouldn't be surprised if she had forgotten something. She was a little surprised that Cass was here too. After all, Cass was a muggle born and Bee thought she was the only muggle born who came here. She looked around the almost empty classroom. She was starting to wonder who esle would join her and Cass in the classroom.

As Drake walked into the classroom he was suprised to see that he wasn't late. It was hectic running from Divination all the way to Muggle Studdies.
Drake took a seat in the front of the class. He was suprised that he liked classes so much after his visit with his father. He began thinking that Slytherin wasn't the right house. He quickly brushed this aside because of his love for potions.
He pulled a book out of his back and began to read it. "The Funny Side of Potions, It's Not All Work."

Dana opened her eyes with a brilliant grin that bird. Definitely a waking on the right side of the bed. The Amy fair she had went to really had improved her mood. And improved it a lot. Rolling out of bed Dana dressed and whizzed down the hallways with some professor yelling after her, not to run in the hallways. Dana was to far to react once the professors words finally registered in her mind though.
Helping herself to a rather huge breakfast – Dana always ate a lot. Some of her friends laughed that with a little of practice she might be able to beat Crabbe nad Goyle one day. Luckily it never showed in her figure. Chatting- and teasing some first and second years good-naturally – Dana finished her breakfast as the group set off with the good mood lasting. The younger students would have COMC – in fresh air, which was one thing Dana envied. Even though her last COMC had been… eventful.
Laughing and concentrating on the conversation in hand Dana skipped forward as one of the taller second year boys tried to let her twirl under his arm, like the dance-move went. Taking his hand Dana tried- really tried to manage the twirl. But the guy was a little too short, so they both went tumbling down. Laughing at her own misfortune as most other people did as well, Dana entered the muggle studies classroom scanning the room with her eyes. Dana had a drivers-licence fro example which was a muggle-trat. But from sides she didn’t know absolutely anything about muggles – Caiest had had to explain her what a kitchen mitten was. Even though Dana still didn’t get the point.
Noticing Cass sitting in the middle of the class Dana arched n eye-brow with surprise. She was a muggle-born – why did she take the class? None the less Dana grinned and twirling so her skirt flared out a bit collapsed into a seat next to Cass and leaned backwards so she could look Cass in the eyes: “Isn’t life grand?”
Turning herself so she was sitting normally in the seat Dana grinned: “I don’t have a clue why you’re in this class, but since you are already here I’m going to take full advantage of everything you know about muggles.”
Tilting her head Dana smiled at the professor and nodded in greeting: “Good morning, professor.” Turning her eyes back at Cass Dana started to pull necessary things out of her over-stuffed bag. OWL-years really had to carry around many books. Luckily there was a carry-all charm on the bag, which made the bag light as a feather.

Bee saw two other people enter the classroom. Well, actually she hadn't seen them enter, she had just looked up and saw them there. The girl had sat near Cass and the boy who had come in, was reading a book in the front row. It's a potions book, thought Bee with distaste. He must be a Slytherin or some person who enjoys potions. Probably a Slytherin, she thought uncomfortably. Personally, her favorite subject was Charms, but she didn't like reading about lessons. It bored her out of her mind.
She looked around the room, impatiently waiting for the class to begin. She took out her own book, which was Quiddich Through the Ages and started reading, forgetting alll about the lesson and the people in the class.

Desiray sighed as she looked at the clock in the Slytherin Common Room. It was, naturally, silver with green snake-like hands that traveled around the green roman numerals. Oh good God... Muggle Studies... someone shoot me! She thought, gritting her teeth and cleaning up her mess of papers and books, stuffing them into her book bag. She stood and fixed her skirt by rolling it up atthe elastic, making the skirt's hem at her mid thigh. She looked at her shirt and nodded in approval at the four open buttons at the top and the two open buttons at the bottom, her midriff showing whenever Desiray moved. She slipped on her shoes and swung her book bag over her shoulder, turning toward the portrait hole.
Soon she was ascending the stairs to the Muggle Studies classroom. She glared and sneered at students who passed, smiling in a flirtatious way at any older boy. They smiled back, some giving her a wink or looking her up and down in a satified way. She smiled and sighed, reassuring her confidence as she walked to the classroom.
Entering, she noticed there were only four students and Professor Foxcroft sitting at his desk. Desiray flipped her long blonde hair and walked to a seat in the back corner, brushing passed Dana. As she passed the Ravenclaw, Desiray gave her a evil sort of glare and then proceeded to the desk. Why she chose this class, Desiray will never know. Oh yeah... an easy A... she smiled smugly as she sat, dropping her book bag to the floor next to her. She put her feet on the desk and started to pick at her nails, which were green with black snakes painted on and very long. She yawned and laid her head back, tracing the paterns on the ceiling with her beautiful bluish green eyes.

Charles entered the Muggle Studies classroom on time exactly, and instead of taking his usual seat in the third row by the window, which was the safest place to daydream, he sat down in the first row. He had vowed to work harder at this class ever since he had seen the kinder side of Professor Foxcroft that he had never known about before this year. Daydreaming was something he had ever been able to do much under the professor's beady eye, but today he was going to really work . He placed his textbook before him and smiled at the Professor and wished him a good morning. He then looked at the two Gryffindor third yeas he didn’t know who were sitting next to him. One of the things he really liked taking pictures of was friendly conversations.

Robin was not surprised to see that the students in the class were much younger than him, for very few students took Muggle Studies when they were in their NEWTs years. Robin, for one, actually found the subject interesting and also he needed something to fall back on if he didn’t become an Auror, and the only other career he had considered was working in the Ministry in Muggle Relations or something related to that field. He hoped he wouldn't have to do that though, and after the kidnap of Ginny and Julie his wish to become an Auror had become stronger and he was working harder in hopes of getting the high grades required to get into Auror training.
Robin thought Foxcroft looked a little tired and stressed today, and wondered what effect the recent kidnaps had on him. Robin knew very little about Foxcroft, though he was a teacher who had a good relationship with his students and his office was open to them at all hours he rarely talked about himself. Robin sat at in the back row, then decided to move one row forward as there weren't too many students in class today. On a spare sheet of parchment he started scribbling, writing down the list of Defence Charms he had looked up the day before. After a minute he realised what he was doing and couldn’t believe it was him doing this, dropped his quill and leaned back in his chair, wondering what Foxcroft was going to teach them.

"Morning all," said Julius with his usual rather tired-looking smile that usually was never seen outside this classroom. He surveyed his students closely trying to gauge their mood; some looked a little tired with the stress of the upcoming exams but not overly so. He looked at the clock on the classroom and realised it was time he got started. "OK, Emerald, Vreeland, books away now," he said, and turned to the board. He smiled at the one or two clever ones who were giving him his complete attention, and was amused to see young Charles Driscoll looking more attentive than usual. He was just about to proceed with the class when he noticed Desiray Cestbon an. "Cestbon, you are in a classroom and in a school. Please close your robes and button up your shirt," he said. "You should know better than to come to my class like that," he continued coldly.
Not wanting to waste any more time he turned back to the board. He pointed his wand at it and murmured an incantation. The words "Muggle Occupations" appeared written in silver. With another flick of his wand shining silver light shone out of it and the next set of words appeared under the first ones, "Disguise and False Identity". He turned back to the class, pacing in front of the first row as he described their task for the day. "You have two tasks today. Split yourselves into groups of two – and one group of three," he added as an afterthought when he realised there was an odd number of students. "By the help of your textbook you will each choose a muggle occupation. Then you will use the charms and spells you know to alter your appearance so that you look like a person who would be doing that job. After that your partner should try and guess what occupation you chose and vice versa. Use your creativity and remember I like to give more points in the last classes of the year," he advised and reminded them.
He still had one last thing to say before they could get started. "For homework you will write down a short paragraph about the occupation you have chosen and the importance of the occupation in muggle society. Now get to work and don’t waste any time," he said. He waited for them all to get started. He was going to pass by them as they worked, helping them along once they decided what they wanted to do.

Drake looked around the room with some anticipation. He was looking for a partner. He wasn't worried that he wouldn't find one, but he was worried about who it was going to be.

Bee put down her book and looked at her professor with rapt attention. She looked over at Desiray and saw that she was wearing some nice cloths. She smiled and then turned back to her professor. She listened to the rest of what he had to say, but faltered when Foxcroft anounced that they had to get in groups of two. "Great," Bee mumbled under her breath as she looked around the room. She wanted to have some fun and get to know different people. She already knew Cass......... She saw the Slytherin that was sitting in the front row (who had been reading a book) and she decided she would ask him if he would like to join her. He looked about her age and it would be nice if he could be friendly towards her. Bee walked towards him and when she reached him, she smiled in a friendly way.
"Hi! Would you like to be my partner?" She knew a Slytherin would probably reject her; but that didn't mean she couldn't try. She looked at him excpectantly, waiting for a reply.

Foxcroft started the class once again looking tired. He always seemed to be tired. Maybe it was something in his personality, just like Snape always seemed to be grouchy. And even there was a reason – Dana didn’t have the right to try and get into the professors personal problems. “Partners?” Dana asked Cass opening her text-book at the right page and starting to skim the professions there, paying special attention to the professions Dana herself would prefer one day. Diplomat – no, there wasn’t much to tell that profession by appearance, the same about lawyer, firm owner, politician. A police-officer? Dana’s finger hesitated over the profession for a moment as she thought of it, before brushing the thought away. She didn’t want to be an auror, so a police-officer wouldn’t work either. Cook might work except for the fact Dana hated cooking and only cooked when she was angry. Dana sighed staring out the window passively, even though her mind was whizzing with thought. Foxcroft never said they would have to pick a job they themselves would actually want to do.
“I’ve got my disguise as a muggle,” Dana told Cass with a sudden grin appearing on her face. Rummaging in her bag Dana brought out a couple of empty piece of parchment and a wrapping paper of a chewing gum. Transfiguring the piece of wrapping paper to a green and frizzy wig Dana put it on, before standing up and concentrating on her clothes. With a selected charm Dana’s pants seemed turned green and blue with bright red suspenders keeping the up. Accompanied by huge shoes with red noses and a black blouse with huge purple spots with happy faces in each purple spot. Pulling out some of her make-up Dana covered her face with bright and bold colors, drawing a happy clowns’ face on her own. Adding a bright red and glowing nose Dana transfigured the pieces of parchment to colorful balls and tried juggling three. Dropping one of the balls immediately Dana just grinned and juggled with two balls for a moment, before making a flourishing bow to Cass. And offering a flower – the regular clown-like flower that would squint water at you. “We were never told to pick a occupation we ourselves would want to have one day, just to pick one occupation,” Dana told Cass with a quick grin and a wink with her eyes twinkling with mischief as she waited for her opinion.

As Lavender heard the Professor tell the class to spilt intp groups of two she gazed around the room. She didn't really know anyone here, but she did recognise a few. Dana Coran was in the grade below her and Cassandra Logton was in Lavender's house. They seemed to be partnering up and the teacher had said that there would be a group of three so Lavender decided to ask them if she could join. She rose from her seat and crossed the room to their table. "Hello:)" She smiled, "Do you want to form a group of three?"

Drake nodded politely to the girl and smiled. “Sure.” He said. “So, we need to decide on an occupation and then we can get started. If you want to try and use spells to put yourself into costume first that would be cool.” He went on. “Umm, I can then guess what you are.” He said this and then let out a little giggle. He was ready for this kind of assignment. It really did sound quite fun.

Charms was his favorite class but did not want to do it with other people but he had to. When Scott had to go into groups he went straight over to Bridget Vreeland. Which was one of his friends. He asked if he could join.

Desiray rolled her beautiful blue-green eyes at the professor and closed buttoned up her shirt. She then looked around for someone to pair up with. There was one Slytherin third year and the rest were Gryffindors or the two Ravenclaws. She couldn't believe her nasty luck. She bit at her nail and wished the Slytherin boy hadm't come to class. So Desiray sat back and did nothing. She didn't want to pair up with any of the filthy mudbloods and would only if they asked or the professor made her. She looked around the room again.
the Slytherin boy had partnered up with a Gryffindor third year, Dana and Cassandra had partnered and then it looked as a Gryffindor would join them. It seemed the only one left without a partner was the Ravenclaw third year. She didn't know his name. She didn't know if she should ask him to be her partner or not. She rolled her eyes at her stupidity. She stood and walked over to him.
"You," she said, rather meanly, "Ravenclaw boy. You are the only one without a partner... and I need one. So lets partner up, eh?" she asked, her voice cold. The boy couldn't refuse. 1- he needs a partner and 2- this is Desiray Cestbon! He has to abide by her, or he knows she will make his life hell if he doesn't agree with everything she says.

Robin thought today's assignment was sort of fun – as an Auror he would have to become quite good at disguising himself anyway, and maybe even as a muggle. He didn’t mind working with a younger student – his two siblings were a lot younger than him and he always had fun with them. He looked for a partner and saw a Hufflepuff who still didn't have one and decided to approach him. "Hey, Charles, you want to work with me?" he asked.

Charles was relieved when he saw Robin still needed a partner, he knew no-one in class and he wanted to show Foxcroft he could get good work done if put his mind to it, but how was he supposed to do that if he couldn’t get himself a partner? "Yes, sure," he said with a shy smile. He didn't know Robin much, except that he usually sat in the back of class and was one of the few older students who took Muggle Studies. Charles tried to think of a good disguise and one that wouldn't require too many spells or charms. The first thing that came to mind was a photographer of course – but they just dressed like everyone else, except they were usually laid down with several cameras. His next idea was to be a reporter, no, nothing too creative there either. Charles flipped through his textbook for ideas, and inspiration finally hit. He was going to be a chef. He'd always been a bit amused by their funny hats and wondered what it would be like to meet them in real life. He had never been anywhere near a muggle restaurant before.
Charles got to business once he had decided what he wanted to do. OK, he needed an apron. Obviously he needed a hat. He went over to Foxcroft to take permission to get some from one of the kitchens but then had a better idea. In one of the cupboards at the back of the class he found some costumes some of the students had placed a pile of costumes in from a play they had put on earlier that year. There he found the apron he was looking for, and a hat he could bend and change colour so he could make a chef's hat. Charles went back to his desk, put on the apron, and then changed his hat from black to white by the use of a Colouring Charm. Thankfully he didn't have to do any Transfiguration; it was one of his worse subjects. He bent the hat carefully around the top and then extended its bottom. Charles smiled and looked back at Robin. He was done.
